Why is thst?
Because we needed them for blockades?

They were designed for that. If you design something for a specific purpose it's inefficiënt to give it capabilities it's not supposed to need.

Of course in this case they are what we have, and operating them differently is just a possibility.

That said, they may not have the fire control range at that resolution to fire on incoming missiles before they hit. In which case they're better left behind.

As a potential halfway measure if things get dicey, how hard would it be to hit the shipyards with a fighter strike?
The planet is billions of km from the jump point. Roughly four billion.

Our fighters have out-and-back strike ranges from 170,000,000 km up to about 300,000,000 km.

As I recall, we discovered the Modrons by pushing Emu to explore more aggressively, when he would have waited until the fleet was further advanced.

I’m not thrilled at the idea of pushing him into a battle if he wants to build up the fleet first.

How are the Bork these days? I don’t remember how long it’s been since we left the territory they claimed. They show any signs of hating us less?

The børk should give us that treaty without too much fuss. I'm not concerned as long as they don't start new colonies in funny places.

I am indeed worried by the fact that the Diplo Relations with the Modrons haven't reached 200 yet (on their end).

My off-the-cuff calculations led me to expect it to happen about a year ago. They must be very Xenophobic.

Agreed... but that's been the case for more than a year. I can't understand what's taking so long.

The simple law of survival.....do unto others before they do unto you ;)

The question I’m trying to pose is: what’s the risk of a 2-front war if we wait to build up our fleet before attacking the Modrons? How’s that compare to the risk of attacking the Modrons now, with an outdated fleet?

The amount of hate those mining colonies had to be generating was very high. I was surprised it didn't lead to war.

Give it time.

Wouldn't they have declared war automatically at the -100 threshhold, though?

So the amount of accumulated hate couldn't have exceeded -99, or we would already have been in a two-front war.

... unless I misunderstand how Diplo works.

We don't know.

We have no way of peeking at the Bork's side of the Diplomacy, so we don't even know whether relations are going up or going down, let alone how close we are to the -100 war threshhold or to the +200 Trade Treaty threshhold.

We have to guess. I'm guessing that relations are going up, but very slowly.

Imo, the current fleet is outdated. Let's use it now while it is still relevant and effective . If we eliminate one enemy, so much the better. The fleet must be upgraded and/or replaced anyway.

So have we settled on a plan?

Hang out at the jump point and try to provoke the enemy fleets into fighting us one at a time?

I'm pretty sure we can defeat BOTH enemy fleets if either:

1) We fight them right at the jump point. We could even take both of them on at once, on such favorable terrain. Or -
2) We fight them one fleet at a time, with enough slack time in between to transfer missiles from the Tenders to the AMM-PD escorts.

If we're going to be fighting them at the jump point, we should get those Partystarters reloaded. Working on that now.

Agreed that our current fleet is so obsolete that it will need to be replaced rather than upgraded.

I expect it to. We need to catch up 200 points plus whatever we were into the red. We generate about 100 points for the diplomats (modified by xenophobia) and 100 for the Treaty, yearly.

August 28th, 2033. 01:08 PM.

The current situation in the Mechanus star system. We will call the visible enemy fleet Red 11 and the enemy fleet that we have lost contact with Red 12.

Planet Mechanus is at top center. The nearest enemy fleet Red 11 is being shadowed by an Agent class stealth AWACS. Naturally the enemy knows that he's there... they could probably see the Agent's AWACS-RADAR emissions from a billion km away... but they have nothing that can catch him and nothing that can lock onto a stealthed ship at 120 million km range. The newly spotted enemy fleet Red 12 has turned off its RADARs and disappeared from our scopes, but the Spy class stealthed passive scout ESN Red Orchestra is on its way out to regain contact. It should pick up the thermal signatures of Red 12's engines in time to avoid coming into fire control range.

I've managed to slip a Spy class passive scout within 350 million km of their home planet.

Currently it's en route to the fourth planet to check for a possible colony. That will mean approaching within 125 million km of the enemy home world.

Our Mountain class Tenders have a huge Hangar Deck (50% larger than our biggest Carrier) but no missile magazines or ordnance handling gear. So they are pants at rearming missile-armed craft. We're going to have to take the Partystarters back to planet Harmony and use that new Spaceport to reload our box launchers.

The missing Red 12 fleet has turned its RADAR back on, momentarily.

They are close enough to our scout to be a factor, but too far away to be a concern.
