I've been dealing with this for over a year (probably even longer) and I have a pretty decent computer, it runs several LLM instances for example. Even upgraded to 64 GB RAM a few months ago. I did turn off 'Hardware accelerated GPU scheduling' and that did make a little bit of a difference. Also been trying to increase and decrease the available virtual memory, but increasing it only made it worse. Only thing that could still be an issue is my SSD, which is a bit outdated compared to my other specs (Samsung 970 EVO Plus). Also, playing without any mods gives way fewer crashes than playing with them on.

I will try other things to help mitigate the crashes, but this is truly disheartening as I have played CK3 with mods for years without this crashing issue.

What is interesting is that not everyone is experiencing random crashes on Windows 11. I am not sure why some us are and others are not.
Random crashes are more usually caused by the Intel 13-14 gen CPU hardware issue, game bugs, or running low on memory.

The problem caused by Windows 11 24H2 (no other Windows 11 version) is more usually a whole-of-PC hard-hang.

For me, when I say random I mean it just happens with no rhyme or reason. Once it does, even a reload of a previous save causes it to crash again at the same month, day, and year. I am on Windows 11 24h2. I admit this happened to me around January even on the 22 update.

That does sound more like the Intel issue - if you have one of those CPUs, and If you haven't updated your bios recently (say, the last month) please check for an updated bios. Then please implement the “Intel Default” option in it, if present.

Otherwise attach here a dxdiag.txt and I'll look into it.

IF dxdiag.txt fails to attach here, rename it to dxdiag.log , or zip it up.

Oh, I do not have an Intel CPU. I have an AMD CPU. If it is a Bios issue, I can see if there is a new Bios update. I will attach the dxdiag report.

As you have an AMD CPU you do NOT have the Intel CPU issue I mentioned. By all means update your bios, but that will probably not help this issue as such.

Thanks!

I don't see signs there of the 24H2 issue, LiveKernelEvent entries, so I think you have a game issue.
a reload of a previous save causes it to crash again at the same month, day, and year.
In fact that looks exactly like a game bug. If there are no mods involved, make a new thread in Bug Reports and attach the affected save there for QA to look into.

I do have mods installed, but I have been using these mods for years without any issue. The newest mods I have installed is not causing issues with anyone else to my knowledge. But, I will do so.

Well, I guess you may as well go ahead. But generally speaking QA and the devs will not look at issues when mods are present - just because mods didn't cause a problem in previous patches, doesn't mean they aren't now.

Can you test with a new unmodded campaign?

I FINALLY FOUND AN ISSUE
After doing a lot a thing,

One was the good one:
A registry entry as usual

Add a QWORD(x64) value in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorPort

Named HmbAllocationPolicy
Value 0 (default)

In fact, this value avoid a memory leak wich causes the crashes encountered

FOr the first time, no crash nor memory leak for a long day

Enjoy it
This fixed my issues with Victoria 3 1.8, but now the crashing is back with 1.9. How did you manage to analyse the error that caused the crashing?

A user has come up with another possible workaround

Definitely worth a shot - let me know if that does help you! Note that to test it you don't actually need to use Processor Lasoo, just Affinity in Task Manager (for testing purposes anyway).

And finally, in the game settings menu switch the renderer to Vulkan.

Let us know if any of those help!

Turns out it was my own custom mod. Though hoping it does not crash anymore since I removed it! I guess I will need to remake my mod from the ground up.

Can't believe this is still an issue for me and others over 7 months since it was first reported. Vulkan renderer just extends the amount of time I can play before it hangs. Playing without mods also extends the amount of time I can play before it hangs, but it still happens all the same. I'm not making the change to the registry to fix it because disabling host memory buffers will result in a performance hit for literally every other task the PC has to do, purely to make 1 game work properly...

The optional windows update I've seen people talk about is either unavailable now (as it was only a preview at the time) or has been committed into the main branch of updates, but I'm not sure. If it's in the main branch then it hasn't fixed anything as I'm on the latest full release atm. Just as a curiosity is this still something PDX is working with Microsoft on to try and resolve, or has it been marked as fixed in their eyes?

PDX are working with MS on it, but so far as I know there is nothing more they can do, any complete fix must come from MS.

Have you tried this workaround?

Thanks for the reply, I must have missed this one so I'll try it and come back if it doesn't resolve. I'm glad to hear Paradox at least considers it still an open issue, I'm aware that the newest Windows release mid June had a fix in there to address seemingly this exact issue and plenty of people reported it fixed after that, I'm among those that are still having it crop up sadly. Hopefully we get some more news soon on this as I'm really wanting to play.

Hi, I don't want to create new thread about this but for me this game is unplayable. The game is not only freezing itself, it freezes my computer completely, I can't do anything apart from pressing reset button. I did the QWORD thing, capped my fps to 60, but it didn't work. Is there any way? Should I create a new thread in CK3 - Tech Support?

You will almost certainly have the Windows 11 24H2 issue. Try this workaround:

If that doesn't help, then yes, a new thread please.

Tried this, it seems to be working for now. Also I capped fps and refresh rate at 60. I will update when any crash occurs again.
