"The Saxon invasion, which had started in 795, finally ended in the year 801. Having won that war, Merovech declared himself the King of East Francia. The Lombard Duke Peter II of Friuli, one of the rebel leaders, made the grave mistake of challenging Merovech to a duel to the death. The Lombard duke was impaled to death by the Frankish king, who kept his skull as a trophy. This made Merovech, a known devil worshiper who had been excommunicated from the Catholic Church, even more unpopular among his subjects and more and more of his vassals joined the rebellion."
