House: Karling
Culture: Frankish

"The Franks and the Saxons clashed yet again at Erfurt just as the 9th Century began. Despite having 300 more men than their enemies, the Saxons led by Grand Chief Gelder himself lost the battle and over 600 men. The Franks, under the command of Duke Grifo II of Chamavia, had suffered less than 300 casualties. The duke, a relative of King Merovech, led the Franks to another victory over the invaders at the Battle of Arnstadt. Both sides had similar numbers at the start of this battle with the Christian Chief Sigward of Lara leading the Saxons. But by the end of the battle, nearly 800 Saxon men lay dead whereas the victorious Franks had suffered minimal losses of just over a hundred or so deaths."

6.jpg

Capital: Devagiri
Maharaja: Jogama
Heir: Thakur Madhava of Uchangidurga (Jogama's brother)
House: Rashtrakuta
Culture: Kannada
Religion: Hindu

"We learned in our previous class how the Oriya Raja Nandivarman 'Ironside' of the Bana Raj tricked Maharaja Jogama of the Rashtrakuta Kingdom. The maharaja only realized what had happened when the Nagavamsis, who were now vassals of the Ironside, stopped paying their tributes to him. Furious, he demanded the Thikana of Vairagara from the Ironside and then declared war after it was refused."

That same year, he also declared a holy war for Bhakkar against Abbasid tributary Sultan Aghlab of the Taghlibid Sultanate. The war went smoothly for the maharaja and the only setback occurred after a small Pratihara unit led by Damapati Vigraharaja of Siwana decided to engage the Taghlibid army under the command of Bistam ibn Amr, which was twice their size, at Kafirkot."

Tsenpo Purgyal Mutri the Chaste of Tibet was most likely murdered either by his half-sister Mangmorje Tshistong or his brother Mune. Both of the plots had high power with the tsenpo's vassals taking part in both of them.

Byzantium's expanding again? I wonder how long that will last?

I doubt that the Franks will be very affected by this loss.
And you were right. The Franks have bounced back.

Big Bashkiria
I hope they get even bigger and in the list of great powers.

Slavic's the second largest religion? How did that happen? They're unreformed, right?

Bavaria (under Frankish rule) is working on German unification. I wonder if the HRE will form eventually?

Byzantium actually gained territory? I wonder if this expansion will continue. The best targets are probably the small Muslim states on the edges and the Slavic states to their north in Europe...

"The Saxon invasion, which had started in 795, finally ended in the year 801. Having won that war, Merovech declared himself the King of East Francia. While the king was celebrating his victory, Guillaume of Toulouse gathered other disgruntled vassals and declared their war of independence. The Lombard Duke Peter II of Friuli, one of the rebel leaders, made the grave mistake of challenging Merovech to a duel to the death. The Lombard duke was impaled to death by the Frankish king, who kept his skull as a trophy. This made Merovech, a known devil worshiper who had been excommunicated from the Catholic Church, even more unpopular among his subjects and more and more of his vassals joined the rebellion."

At her advice, he decided to revoke titles of one of his vassals and grant them to their son. The basileus saw Zoe the Unfaithful of Trebizond as the perfect candidate to have her titles revoked but instead came to face a large uprising against his rule. Zoe the Unfaithful may have been an adultress but Leon the Monk was by now seen as a weak ruler who was nothing but a puppet of his lowborn German wife."

The Holy thus named his second son, seven years old Rajkumar Vijada-Dasasyandana, as the heir to the Pratihara Kingdom."

Byzantium is in civil war again. That didn't take long.

Why did Merovech proclaim himself King of East Francia and not King of Germany?

It seems like East Francia is collapsing, but a victory could probably lead to the foundation of the Holy Roman Empire - or the Unholy Roman Empire, if we're being honest.

I wonder what would happen if Merovech was assassinated?

Merovech might be screwed for real now.
Oh yeah, he is.

I wonder what would happen if Merovech was assassinated?
He had inherited the Kingdoms of Bavaria and East Francia; so he made the latter his primary title now.

The Francian Civil War appears undecided. We'll see how that goes.

The nomads are getting extremely aggressive - attacking Byzantium and an Abbasid vassal? That takes guts.

The capital of Byzantium isn't Constantinople anymore? Does that mean the ERE should now be known as the Ancyran Empire?

I will say, Otemis had the balls to demand the bloody Byzantine Empire become his tributary. That's some bravery, well, from a certain point of view at least.
Dude's called the Bane of Galicia-Volhynia by his enemies. He's already a certified badass.

"On 18 May 804, Vatsraja the Holy died under mysterious circumstances at the age of 54 and his realm was splintered into two. While most of the Rajput vassals recognized the Holy's 10 years old son Vijada-Dasasyandana as the new Maharaja of the Pratihara Kingdom, the lords of Malwa crowned infant Viranarayana as their puppet king."

11 years old Tsenpo Purgyal Nyantsen of Tibet was murdered by his half-sister Gemathar's mother Gar Thrimalo, a character once mentioned way back in the 788 post. While she is now married to the Chief of Coqen, she was taken prisoner by then tsenpo Mutri the Chaste, Nyansten and Gemathar's father, while she was still a child and then forced to become his concubine when she became an adult. Was she punishing the son for the crime of his father? Or does she intend to have her daughter Gemathar eventually rule Tibet? I have no idea.

As for Vatsraja the Holy, he was murdered by his rival Thakur Dilippal of Godwad. The thakur had seduced Maharani Kishan and is the real father of her daughter Madhavi (which is not public knowledge). Thus he and the maharaja had become enemies of each other.
