A new Hungary, 1936 AAR

Things do not look good.

I do not doubt they will get worse.

It is almost impossible for them to get any worse I would say

Hope Horthy has build himself a nice land-battleship in Budapest to stop the Soviet horde.

Hahaha this made me laugh so hard, too bad I can´t send the Navy up the Donau
But don´t worry, the Hungarian Army will be a hard nut to crack

Great to see you picking up the story again, it’s important to see the story through to the end - a finished AAR is something to be proud of. And Hungary itself has put up a very good fight - those Germans proved unreliable allies.

But compared to OTL, the resistance has gone on a lot longer and Hungary and its now client states are still largely intact. Has there been any Allied movement in the West?

I have been busy with seminar and other things for the university, but don´t worry I will carry on this AAR!
And it is still going on No unfortunately there was no D-day or any other landings :/
Hopefully I can make a new update today or tomorrow, because I will be gone for the weekend.

I already have a new idea for the next AAR, it will be something totally different (it will not be an interactive AAR)

I presume that Q1 is first quarter of the year, but not sure what ACAs means :/

The ACA's are the AARland Choice AwAARds - run usually every quarter. Essentially folks select up to four AARs per category based on the main games, plus an "other" category to capture past PDS games.

19. Chapter: Red Europe
February - May 1946

The Royal Hungarian Army is falling to predisposed positions

The "Wunderwaffen" testing ground will shortly fall in Soviet control

The last German assault has been halted and eventually pushed back, the Wehrmacht is dead

The mighty Red Army is knocking on the doors of Hungary

On the 26th of February 1946 Austria surrendered to the Comunists

Some battles are pretty much in our favor

But others not that much as they can bleed Hungary out (notice the Soviet doom stack coming from Wiener Neustadt)

Henneyey reports to Horthy that the Soviets launched contemporary assaults on Komarno and Dunajska Streda

This was the third or forth attack on those provinces, looks like the Soviets don´t mind the casualties

Horthy ordered the Submarines to be destroyed and the crew to be sent to reinforce the armed forces as they were useless, but he didn´t issue any such order for the surface fleet

For those who don´t recall, Hungary still has the surface fleet stationed in Split (the ships were destroyed on the 5th of April as the Soviet encirclement was imminent)

The coragious 354 000 Hungarian soldiers are being commanded by field marshal Kiss L.

On the 26th of March the Soviet tried again, of course it was in vain

The battle ended on the 1st of April

Most of the Fatherland is in the hands of the Motherland

The situation in Eastern Europe

In mid April units fell back to new defensive positions

The persistence of the Red Army is enviable

Until now all the battles fought for Dunajska Streda and Komarno

Amounted to 15 000 Soviet casualties and 6 800 Hunarian. But still the Soviets kept coming

Red Europe, Horthy greatest fear is now materializing in front of him

On the 29th of April Yugoslavia surrendered, all trade was cancelled by Hungary as now we were encircled. A couple of Yugoslavian division joined our forces to avoid Soviet captivity.

Soon after, on the 6th of May Romania fell as well, the situation is dire for the Axis.

Through Soviet propaganda we got the news of Germany´s surrender, which proved to be true

Even more bad news

Looks like Finland is using the same tactic as us, except that they are on an island

The burden of war definitively has not forgot the Admiral as he is visibly getting older

That´s why the chapter tittle is called Red Europe indeed Hitler screwed everything up. Yes, the Japanese are still fighting on (actually they are just happy with what they have, they haven´t advanced in the pacific for a couple of years now, will put something about this in the next update). But I think that the Soviets will push them out of Siberia as their forces will move away from Europe since Bulgaria will collapse soon and there is only Italy and Hungary who oppose the occupying force.

You must be loyal to the nation and not betray it when things turn grim.

That was an impressive navy... but how would it have fared against a Soviet Carrier Fleet? Sad to see those wonderful Battleships scuttled... are you sure you (or the Germans) couldn't put them on tracks and use them in the defence of Budapest?

I'm hoping Horty gets to see the sea again, but I'm not hopeful.

Well there were no Soviet Carriers, but I am pretty sure that the Royal Hungarian Navy would smash them
I agree but the sailors are needed to protect the homeland. Well the most plausible options would be to sail the ships up Danube river, but much of the river is in control now.

20th Chapter: The end
June - October 1946

Bulgaria capitulated at the beginning of June, just a few Italian divisions are holding off the Soviet in Greece

The Hungarian Royal Army adopted the tactic to attack the attacking force from nearby regions (1 division each) to disrupt the Soviet attacks

Stalin has ordered his best units to smash us down

An another key element of our outstanding defense was the tactical use of tank division, they were placed so that they could be sent asap to any region that was in danger

The situation on the 11th of June 1946

Even though the fights were in our favor the soviet kept pushing

It is rare to fight against infantry

Total casualties in the 15 battles of June amounted to 13 454 Hungarians and 18 156 Soviets

Some minor offensive were led by our tanks!

Eventhough the casualties for July were only 4 377 for Hungary and 11 866 for the Soviets, the need for reinforcements was drastic

In August the army had to pull further back, the withdrawel was sistematic, rearguards were left behind to keep the enemy bussy (the blue squares indicates the provinces previously being held by the Hungarians)

Just one battle in August amounted to the same casualties as the whole previous month, Hungary can not sustain such loses anymore

Some other battles were still much in our favor

*Well I kinda f***ed it up, you can see that the game auto saved, but I did try out something and the auto save for Hungary 13th of August is gone. So I will just make up what would probably happen since the AAR is almost done anyway*

Well at least you can see the country I will do next

August ended with Hungarian casualties up to 14 thousand and the Soviets more than 25 thousand.
In September the army counted just around 214 k of the 345 k from 5 months earlier. The Soviet launched a couple of attack on Budapest but with no avail. Only after encircling it from all directions beside south they started a grand offensive on the 21st of September. They threw all they got, around 90 k troops from heavy and medium tank division, supported by never ending columns of infantry, versus a 28 k garrison which by now consisted mostly of people too old to fight.

After 11 days of bloody fighting for each house and street of Budapest, Horthy finally admitted defeat. After years of fierce fighting against the Soviets (from Budapest and once all the way up to Stalingrad), making the Soviet pay for each meter of Hungarian soil, the Royal Hungarian army lays down it´s weapons on the 2nd of October 1946.

Even though defeated, the Hungarians felt proud of them self and rightly so as their bravery was unmatched both on land and sea, but there is only so little a small nation can do against a giant!

I am glad that you enjoyed it! I wish I could have sent my navy up the Danube river and park them in Budapest, I am sure that this would prolong the war for some time
