The construction of a Hungarian navy has commenced and the first tanks are rolling off the assembly lines, whilst in the meantime the Yugoslavians have crumbled as they faced the invasion! This is excellent news for Horthy's ambitions! Hungary has secured its position as master of the Balkans, but it remains to see whether it seeks to further its influence in the region. Romania would be an obvious contender to be invaded, for those borders don't quite fit those of the old Empire.;) Although, that might be to poke in the hornet's nest and call upon the wrath of the Allies.

If I were in Romania, Bulgaria, or Greece I might be a mite concerned.

Congratulations on the absorption of Yugoslavia (and Albania, before the Italians try to grab it) and the regaining of ports. Given it is Hungary now reforging the old Empire, will it be thought of (unofficially anyway) as the Hungaro-Austrian Empire, or maybe just Hungary-Austria ;)?

A word of warning to the national leader: now that you have absorbed the old Serbian opponents too, just beware during any state visits to Sarajevo :p. You know what happened last time.

I like the option of Hungary-Austria but the name of the state will be the kingdom of Hungary :)
I know, don´t worry, but perhaps it will be in the Balkans where the 2. WW starts ;)

Indeed it is, the Hungarians have multiple reasons to feel proud! I agree with you, but we shall see what Horthy has in mind :)
I am not that concerned about Romania nor Bulgaria. Greece is usually the hornet´s nest that can unleash the Allies.

If I were in Romania, Bulgaria, or Greece I might be a mite concerned.
There are some plans regarding them, but you will have to wait to see. :)

6. Chapter: The forced alliance
November 1938 - May 1939

The admiral has issued a cruiser to be built. Our experts compared CL from Germany, Italy and Japan. It appears that the German one is the most advanced so we buy the licence for it.
2d7hvmu.jpg

Beside the cruiser we also licensed some motorized troops to combine with our tanks
4r2vpw.jpg

Henneyey was invited to see Horthy.
Henneyey: You wanted to see me my regent.
Horthy: I do. Tell me Gustav how many soldiers do we need to cover all fronts?
Henneyey: I think that our troops would be thinly spread and not that effective.
Horthy: Than further expansions should be avoided? Never the less can we mobilize that many men?
Henneyey: If we relay on better equipment and tactics we can still expand but we would run out of man to hold the territory.
Horthy: Hmm, than I will have to change my plans.
Henneyey: What are your plans my regent?
Horthy: You will get to know them when time is due Gustav.

Horthy just ordered to send ambassadors to Bulgaria and Romania as he was notified that the Spanish civil war ended.
v7dyrs.jpg

Just a couple of days later in January of 39 the ambassadors came to report to Horthy. Both Bulgaria and Romania turned down our offer of alliance.
"I was expecting this, but I´ve got a plan" said Horthy.

Henneyey received the order in February, so he deployed the units on the Bulgarian border.
2ptpgs5.jpg

A couple of days later the order to seize power and establish a new government was authorized. The Hungarian tanks also saw action for the first time.
n3p283.jpg

After a month of mostly fighting the rocky terrain our troops managed to engage the last Bulgarian defense.
vnhxc7.jpg

A couple of hours later the regent received this message.
6xqb8k.jpg

Things are getting hot. Also we just finished producing the motorized units.
dha176.jpg

On the 2nd of April South Africa has been accepted into the Allies.
Just one day later things get real and war breaks out.
1gn790.jpg

As our regent was fearing what may happen he got some good news.
16gg5lu.jpg

Situation in Czechoslovakia and Poland, seems like Danzig is still in Polish hands.

So the triple alliance is created!

Preview of the forces of the triple alliance.
2zqugz5.jpg

If my calculations are not off, if mobilized the alliance can field up to 540 000 soldiers. Which is an considerable army. Horthy just wants to secure peace. Though the Hungarian army has 180k soldiers, it is planed to be expanded up to 250k. As war is raging on nobody is safe!

Germany is fighting on 2 fronts, but Warsaw is likely to fall anytime now.
qs77l1.jpg

On the 9th of May the Polish army lowered their guns, it is just a matter of time before Czechoslovakia will follow.
vnpmyq.jpg

Prague is being encircled, also our neighbors joined the allies.
msoqxd.jpg

Horthy is constantly supervising the construction of the 2 DDs as they are almost finished. Perhaps they will come just in time for war?

Surely the Balkans will be a bastion for peave on these troubled times? :D

Horty have done a great job at building an empire. Hopefully he will be just as good at building double d's :p
If I he only had to build destroyers it would be fine, but he will be building battleships!
Surely the Balkans will be a bastion for peave on these troubled times? :D
Yeah, sure they will, as if the Balkans were ever a troublesome part of Europe :p

The triple alliance will help with manpower and provide a buffer zone. So if it’s war with the allies soon, a conquest of Greece next? Athens is useful, good resources and ports. But you need those ships for Crete

I am enjoying the alternate history which your actions have caused this far!:) The Balkans may not be that industrialised, but I feel that the existence of unity in the region adds a new card for the major powers to attempt to use in their game for supremacy. Or at least that is what they should think.;)

Horthy's expansions have placed the Tripple Alliance in an interesting situation; Greece's support for the Allies has gained them a hold south of Hungary, through the aquire of Romania Hungary has opened for Commintern military operations against the Empire, and the Axis share long borders sith them in the west. The question is wether Horthy predicts it more worth aligning to a faction or creating his own. The benefit of the first would obviously be strong foreign support and that of the second would be a possibility to remain at peace.

It definitely does. Well the alliance was kinda forced but hey, we are playing HOI so that is to be expected.
We shall see, even I am kinda confused now what to do next :"D btw there will be quite some important events happening in the next update. :)
Hmm...just wondering; are you pursuing BCs too? The Research-queue screen had both BB & BC? Or did you drop the BC after the vote? Sorry if I missed that bit.

Anyway, your greater-Hungary:) is coming along nicely.
You saw correctly, it was required since tecs for guns is shared for BBs and BCs, but now I am only researching BBs.
Thank you! :)

btw new chapter is coming up now, I was busy studying the previous days.

7. Chapter: The ongoing war in Europe
May 1939 - February 1940

The regent ordered to be notified immediately with foreign affairs. While he sat in his sofa, waiting to be notified to inaugurate the first Hungarian ships, he was thinking about what is laying ahead. About the future of his kingdom.

The situation in the east, beginning of June. The Czechoslovakian army is still fighting on even though the situation is grim. Romania deployed it´s troops on the Soviet border.
2r1zfps.jpg

The french managed to break through the Siegfried line, but for how long?
2eflwzb.jpg

The two destroyers type 1934-A are built. Also Hungary is prospering resource-wise.
ei8efb.jpg

A little bit more about the ships:
-their armament consists of 5 128 mm guns
-it has 2 quadruple 533 mm torpedo launchesrs
-it is equipped with 60 mines
-has a top speed of 36 knots (=67 km/h)
-it has various AA guns (20 and 37 mm)

Conducting see trials, admiral Horthy personally took command of the ship!
z2-destroyer.jpg

Enthusiastic of the new gains, the admiral ordered 2 more destroyers which are a brand new model.
6egikp.jpg

On the 9th of June Luxembourg was annexed and on the 15th Czechoslovakia followed.
Soon after Italy joined the axis.

pefl.jpg

Beside the 2 destroyers Hungary purchased a licence for an another Nürnberg light cruiser. Looks like Hungary is investing heavy into the navy.

Both Belgium and the Netherlands were now occupied by Hitler´s regime.

Foreign secretary immediately goes Horthy with this news.
20k9f94.jpg

"My regent, the soviets are mobilizing their armed force."
"Call Henneyey" so did the foreign secretary leave and called the Chief of staff.
Henneyey: "You wanted to see me my regent?"
Horthy: "Have you heard the news? Is our army ready?"
Henneyey: "I did my regent, but there is no threat to us. My informants reported some hostilities going on on the Finish border."
Horthy: "Never the less, what would happen if the Soviet attacked us and tried to impose their revolution?"
Henneyey waited and said: "My regent, Romanian Forces should hold up enough for either our and Bulgarian forces to reinforce or to either establish a defensive line in the Carpathians."
"Is that all that you can tell me? How long could we hold against the Russian hordes?" Horthy asked horrified.
Henneyey said nothing at first, Horthy took a look at him, then Henneyey said: "My admiral, other countries wouldn´t let this happen. Do you know how afraid Churchill is about them? Not to mention Hitler, he hates Stalin."
The eyes of Horthy lit up as he heard this words. He entrusted Henneyey to be quiet about this and asked him "Are the new cadets ready, the light cruiser MKH Esztergon will be ready any tome now."
"They will be my regent and only the best one were selected to be part of the crew!"
"Excellent," said Horthy.

Things seems grim for the Allies as Sydney fell on the 3rd of November 1939

People from Hungary are working hard for the army expanding program.
15nb1hg.jpg

In the middle of Novemer the hull of MKH Esztergom was launched. The main 150 mm guns were already awaiting to be mounted onto the ship.

A couple of days before Christmas the regent was surprised to hear the news. We can build BBs!

Deployment of the ship
28itcvp.jpg

Horthy speech at the inauguration of MKH Esztergom to it´s crew of 530 and thousends of civilans who came to see and to other who listened to this event over radio.
"Today is a great day for Hungary, for you my fellow people. As Hungary is becoming a powerful nation. A nation that the world has not predicted. After the fall of the old empire it was not only ground that we lost, mostly it was pride. We all endured hard times, but no more shall war destroy us, or anybody be our ruler. We will stand strong, we will stand united, as we can trust on each other I am proud to be a regent of such people. I confess, I missed the time when I was an admiral. But I never looked on subordinate soldiers as strangers. I saw them as my sons and I would avoid any useless harm to them. You, people from Hungary and others who are part of this magnificent kingdom, are my family. This ship is just a tear into the ocean compared to other navies, but we have something that others don´t have, the will to be ourselves . I know that some of you didn´t approve of the triple alliance, but it is for the best. As I read newspapers and listen to the radio, the ongoing conflict in Europe and around the world make me worry. I hope I am mistaken, but there might come a new war, an even worse than that from 20 years ago. And believe me, that if such war comes, we will be ready for it. It might come from the communism in the east, greedy Greeks from the south, or axis expansionism from north and west. We can fight those, but never let a war come between us, a discrepancy between fellow people. A discrepancy in our beliefs, our hearts, in our beloved Hungary. As it is more powerful than thousand guns, soldiers and tanks, that´s why we gathered today, to commemorate the hard work of people and our believes in a new Hungary. Long life the Kingdom of Hungary and it´s people!"

A big episode! So the Hungarian Navy begins to take shape. And Horthy seems to be implying Hungary will stay neutral, even while buying its equipment from the Germans. Does he think that neutrality will be long term - not join a faction and only go to war if attacked? Or might he be tempted to join in himself if he sees a chance to expand the empire further?

Yeah, there was a lot happening in this episode :) Indeed it is taking shape, in the next update it will actually double in size (if you look at the production screen). For now he is neutral, but we shall see what will happen. The only thing I can say is that kingdom of Hungary doesn´t have any claims so expanding it is not likely, but war is. You know what they say, that the enemy of your enemy is your friend. :)

Long live the Hungarian Navy!

So the war in the East is going very badly it seems.

New news reach us from the far east. On the 7th of July Australia surrenders to Japan.
2822qti.jpg

A couple of days later we bought the licence for motorized infantry by Germany to supplement our light tanks.

On the other hand, the Axis are expanding.
339hzqc.jpg

Admiral Horthy was pleased to hear this news and ordered a construction of a battle ship as the tank will be finished.

At least some good news for the British as they are taking back ground in Libya and Egypt.

Current status of the Royal Hungarian Navy.
HQ Budapest:
-I. Army Corps
-II. Army Corps
-III. Army Corps
-IV. Army Corps
-V. Army Corps
-I. Tank Corps

Each Army Corps consist of:
-3xINF+ART
-3xINF+ART
-3xINF+ART
-3xINF+AT
-3xINF+AT

While the I. Tank Corps:
-L. Arm+2x MOT. INF.
-L. Arm+2x MOT. INF.
-L. Arm+2x MOT. INF.

In total the army can field up to 280k soldiers.
Horthy writing in his diary:
"The recent few months has changed the world as we know. Some nations were overtaken by others. I feel confident in the army. Germany is constantly inviting us to join their factions. I don´t see a reason to do so. It would just bring a war that we don´t want. Greece and England are still holding still. The Italians have conquered quite a lot of territory and also the island of Crete, but they are loosing territory in North Africa. The thing that is bothering me is the fact that Finland has been accepted into the Axis, will this bring war with the Soviet Union?
The navy is increasing in size, for now it counts 2 CL and 4 DD, with 1 CL and DD being built. And of course the latest technological breakthrough, a battleship of our own design. After years of research we are building MKH Szent István. What do people expect from me? So far things are going good for them, but what will the future bring? I really don´t like the idea of a war between the Axis and Communists, if they will not defeat them, the reds will have a reason to take over all of Europe. America is ignoring all this, even as Japan is expanding very dangerously. Dear diary, I have not been so insecure about the future since the 1918. Sleep tight as I probably won´t be able to."

Long live the Hungarian Navy!

So the war in the East is going very badly it seems.
Let´s hope it does! And also is is getting more and more great :p
I will do a picture of the far eastern theater so that you can get an idea what Japan is doing in it´s backyard :)

At least a battleship is laid down - I truly hope it has a glorious career.

The situation doesn´t look too good for the Italians

Horthy is reviewing defensive positions of the army. The situation is getting serious, so much that the admiral ordered to be waken up if any thing happens and to have the papers ready to authorize a mobilization. Meanwhile the Hungarian tank division are deployed around Vienna.

Troops are being redeployed on a new front. Units have been pulled from the Greek border and also from Zadar, only the minimum was left there.

As Germany deployed more tanks than us, the admiral consulted and ordered more AT divisions to be built. The deployment of the troops and men being mobilized were a clear sign to the people that something is going on. Something bad.
fks1lf.jpg

The admiral let out a smile as he was notified about our advance in battle ships.

Italy has almost driven off the Brits from the eastern Mediterranean

Japan also continues with it´s expansion.

The admiral was horrified as he heard this news.
2r74ryo.jpg

Horthy consulted with Henneyey. The chief of staff told him that Hungary couldn´t hold back more than 2-3 weeks if the axis attacked. Also as Japan attacked the USA it seems like the axis are the rullers of the world. So Horthy decides to join them since we can not hold them back.
vnmrva.jpg

Horthy and his wife and state representative went to Germany just a week later, as Hungary. Here they are being accompanied to the train station as they leave Berlin.

While on the visit Hitler and Horthy hold a conversation.
Hitler: "My dearest friend, I am happy that you and your triple alliance finally joined us. I was worried that you wouldn´t join at all."
Horthy: "Of course I would, but I had issues with Romania and Bulgaria, their governments presented the problem."
Hitler:"Puppeting them really took my by surprise, as well as your army status and quick victories."
Horthy:"There were some disputes and this was the only way to achieve the greater good."
Hitler: "I don´t judge Miklos, as I am doing the same."
Horthy:"Your conquest of Poland, Czechoslovakia and fighting with France at once, was a powerful display of your army capabilities."
Hitler: "The best is yet to come Horthy, and I will need also your help. But all when time is due. I also heard that you are building a battleship, is that right?"
Horthy answered proudly: "Yes, but is 2 of them now. It will be the fruit of our own engineering and craftsmanship."
Hitler: "Well I guess a navy won´t hurt. But be careful. I had a brand new battleship, the Bismarck and the carriers managed to sink it. There is one thing I demand from you and that´s to mobilize and expand your army even more."
Horthy replied "I am doing already this, also we fielded some light tank division."
Hitler didn´t seem impressed and he said "If you need anything feel free to licence it from me, I will make sure that anything you need you will get."
A servant comes to notify that Ms. Horthy and Ms. Braun just came from shopping.
Hitler and Horthy shook hands

Mussolini requested our aid in Greece, the tank army corp has been dispatched.
2vkhkeh.jpg

Also new laws has been appointed.

There are also some other pros from joining the axis

Sorry for not posting for one week or so, but I was busy with my study. Hopefully the future development will be more interesting that the couple of last updates. :)
