I created a mod (available on the Steam Workshop) in which, among other things, I recreated the 769 bookmark and added Amalfi, the last maritime republic. Will we ever officially see the 769 and 936 bookmarks? Also, I hope they add the Duchy and County of Amalfi, especially when they release the DLC related to republics and trade.

IIRC there were dev comments about not doing anything as far back as the 8th century anymore, but the China DLC might come with a 10th-century bookmark - it may not be 936 though.

Would love to see more bookmarks, just not 769 which was pretty bad.

Didn't play CK2 what was wrong with 769 in that game?

Really like the idea of a Charlemagne campaign, or another Iranian Intermezzo start date, or simply having more game in my video game by expanding the start dates, but I've noticed it seems like it was really hit or miss if you enjoyed the start date.

I think general consensus is that the CK mechanics start to falter a bit if you pull the start date that far back.

We're not planning any additional start dates right now. That may change in the future of course, but there's a strong internal bias against earlier start dates in particular.

We need a "Sad" reaction for messages like this.

Not really surprising given how much Carolingan government changed just between Charlemagne and Louis I. We would need a "proto-feudal" government or something for a start date that far back...

I hope we do eventually get the 936 Iron Century start date again. Especially since the far east was very interesting during that time. And it seems to have much more historical sources compared to the earlier 769 start date

I'd expect there to be a 900s start date added eventually (who knows when) and also a late 1200s/early 1300s start date for whenever there's a High Middle Ages-focused expansion, but I don't think I'd expect any more by default.

There has been a narrative that a large segment of players would play somewhat exclusively the earliest start date in a Crusader Kings game. With the dev response, I do wonder if this narrative is greatly exaggerated.

What are the reasons the dev team are reluctant to go earlier if you don't mind my asking?
Relative lack of reliable records and the time period being generally unsuited to our mechanics are the big ones. Start dates in general are a huge pain to make and maintain, since they're effectively alternate worldstates that have to be manually kept up to date for the rest of the game's lifespan.

Only slightly exaggerated. There's not an overwhelming majority of players that only ever play the earliest date, but it's a significantly larger amount than the others; even larger if you discount people playing the tutorial in 1066.

If that is the case, the question becomes that whether people really like the 878 start in particular, or as the narrative suggests, people like the earliest start date available. I'm not sure if it's ever confirmed the reason why you guys wouldn't want to do this despite you know it's somewhat popular. I'm thinking of lack of historical records of earlier times, or the time period was before feudalism became more mainstream. Again, if people really want this then I really don't feel these two are insurmountable obstacles.

I mean, I personally play in the earlier dates primarily because that’s when many of the things are. If I want to play in Persia (I love playing in the region), then 868 has most of the content. If I am to play Tribal or pagan, then 868 date has much more of them than later start dates, and so on.

Conversely, there is often a little reason for me to play in the 1178 unless I want to play as a specific character. There aren’t e.g. that many cool religions / religion features / government forms that I will get to know exclusively by playing later, so…

Which is IMHO mostly problem of late game feeling like a pretty unloved period, and that would not be solved by devoting even more resources to earlier start dates.

Anyone else feel like going on a treasure hunt for undiscovered historical documents from across Europe detailing land ownership in the 8th century so we can expand the historical record far enough to for a 769 start date? /j
