I was thinking about Jon and Tomar, but I can do the USSR part.

I think we should ban demanding territory from countries that are in war with a human player.
Sounds good to me.

What's your ICQ number - it's not in the ICQ thread? Myself, I put my ICQ number in my sig - that's an easy way of making it readily available.

Anyway, the current plan is to start a new game on Monday evening and so you should be able to get in at the start of that.

Andrew

Don't you have Cicero in your icq list?

Edit - I would like to pass tonight. Since I'm USA it shouldn't be much of a problem to have me jump in for the 2nd session.

Fine with me.

I can play tonight, but would rather see that we postponed. I have planed to play tonight but would really appreciate if we could cancel todays game.

For the record I can play tuesday and wednesday this week.

I was hoping to play tonight so it's a shame to see Jon and Viss crying off. Maybe the rest of us can start a 36 game and see how badly Ise and Tomar can break it as Germany and USSR? I can do my bit to break the scenario by playing UK and trying to buy up all the key resources on the world market ... :)

I'm going to be in ValkNet at 18:00 CEST and will take it from there ...

Andrew

I'll see what I do - if I'm really effective now I can probably play a semi-passive nation like USA.

Hm, if this will be kind of a semi-test game, we could try without any house rules at all (apart from "host is not allowed to change the savegame file :) ). Would be interesting to see how that would work out ... . All dirty tricks would be allowed - you don't have to use them, but if you are desparate or a dodgy character you can use them. The only rule would be - if you use a "dirty" trick, you have to tell after the game that you did it and what you did.

;)

Two of us tried a test game (while the rest had to wait) and it appeared that the Soviet minister bug was fixed in 39. So we played 39 for an hour or so. Then Tomar complained that he couldn't research some Late War doctrine. I have tried to reproduce the problem in single player 39 but it seems fine. Maybe it was just lag - I was often finding that the program was slow to register a research choice. Please can we get this tested again. And maybe we need to form a separate 39 group. I'm getting tired of the constant attempts to find some fault with the 39 scenario to force us to play 36.

This tech issue didn't seem like much of a problem to me but again this session was aborted and we started with 36 again. This was quite unhistorical as usual. Yugoslavia, Greece and Saudi Arabia were annexed without any reaction from the Allies. Italy couped Rumania and then attacked it. I couldn't coup it back for some reason (option was greyed out) but didn't demand that the game be stopped as everyone seems seems to want when things don't go perfectly. There was some huge battle between giant armies of expeditionary forces - 30+ divs each side. Very silly and, despite urging from USSR, I stayed well out of it.

Japan conquered Nat China as usual (because there's no human player) and has taken Tibet too. There was some fluff about a DoW on USSR - another big mess requiring a restart and replay of several weeks. What was the cause of that and why did we have to restart? You do realise that Japan actually fought a border war with USSR at about this time?

There's talking of resuming the game on Friday...

Andrew

I agree with you, Andrew. And this game will becom even more silly once the big war starts. There is no reason for Germany to stick to any historical events ... .

I wouldn't mind starting a new scenario '39 game on Friday. Or we can continue the old game for a 2 or 3 hours and then see what the '36 fans have to say. :)

I don't mind starting a 39 game, but I do mind starting lots of games that goes on for 1 session only.

Are you saying the reason for aborting the 39 game was only a tech that wouldn't be researched?? That happened all the time to me too - just wait some time and it is OK. It also seemed like Tomar had some lag, I usually recieved 2-3 messages from him at once (and I did not experience any lag). Therefore it's reasonable to believe lag was the reason.

I assumed someone was saying somrthing I didn't hear and that there was another reason we aborted the game. I'm 95% certain the reason he could not research it was because of lag.

Next time we start a 39 game I also suggest only those who want to play 39 attends, or else they will use all sorts of reasons to restart a 36 game.

Yeah, I guess we should continue the old game on Friday. Should be decided on that evening anyway.

Here's the log. The other issue was Italy joining the Axis because it was at war with a member of the Allies - Yugoslavia. That seemed a reasonable outcome to me and not a reason to restart.

Andrew, sorry you feel this way... Some clarifications

-We stopped the 39 mostly because Germany unwittingly dragged Italy into war with allies due to diplomatic blunder in Yugo. Italy was not ready for this, so it would have led to disaster for the axis (we think)

- The bug with the soviet doctrine was not due to lag, all other research items could be researched except this one, I tried and tried for the whole duration of the short game (a month ?) but it never could be selected. Never the less we would have found a solution for this, but the above problem stopped the ongoing game.

Re "silliness" and historicity... Unfortunately 39 does not guarantee more historicity... the issues you mention (Japan taking over china and Italy going on a rampage) also happen in 39... The prior 39 game we played Italy dowed Turkey day 1.. Until the game mechanics impose a penalty on Italy and/or axis (10 percent dissent like SU, or hit on US WE/Soviet CG for Italy's dows?) we will keep on seeing aggressive Italys... Further a chinese player will not be able to stop the japanese either and Japan will almost always annex China.

Re exp forces: this is the only way to slow down Italy's rampage... While soviet exp forces were not able to (and cannot) prevent Italy from taking over Rumania early they did force a heavy commitment of Italian forces as well as of german forces and the campagin dragged for what =4 months ?- instead of the usual 2 weeks if Su does nothing... And while some 80 percent of Italys army was committed there, Italy was not able to attack elsewhere.

Re the Japan dow mess: another diplomatic bungle by the axis.. Japan dowed communist china without apparently checking its alliances.. Well commie china was allied with SU so Japan found itself at war with the comintern. As in this stage of the game this was really tough on Japan (and quite good for SU :) ) -and therefore on the axis- in the interest of fair play as well as to keep the game interesting we decided to go back to the save. We would do the same in similar situations for any country so if you find yourself in a mess because you pressed the wrong button or because or a bug or whatever, just let everybody know
