So... my game has like 10... Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, Human, Draconian, Frostling, Tigran, Orc, Archon (mod), Tiefling (mod)

Or are you just talking base game or something?
Hi, I played this game as soon as it was released, Dwarf,High Elf, Human, Draconian, Orc, Goblin were the races. But reading your message i find out that there exist 2 expansions of the game they released with more 3 races. I didn't play the expansions.

What kind of starting faction/units would ensure a better chance of survival during auto-combat in early game? As a comparison with Planetfall I found out this combination (Vanguard/Synthesis) to be the most promising one for success:

1. Tough melee leader/hero to act as a bullet sponge.
2. Tier I&II units with long range attacks who have a perk which makes them harder to hit.

Does this translate into Age of Wonders 4 in some kind of way?

Most of the toughest Rulers and Heroes will likely be those equipped with shields. Melee attacks are more common and cannot miss anymore, so stacking defense and resistance against them would probably be better. Also combat heals only provide temporary health now, so faster strategic healing would be good too. Maybe you could pick Elusive (lots of defense and resistance vs melee overwatch) mind trait and Fast Recuperation or Quick Reflexes body trait for your faction's form?

Industrious and Mystic so far have the most promising ranged units to me, the former backing them up with some pretty good melee tanking units. Barbarian culture might also be worth a try, I am not sure how good their ranged is (they have one short ranged spear unit, but they also have a conventional archer who likely has longer range) but their cities and outposts have a special ability that lets them act like a mix of Milestone Charge Stations and Paragon Inc. Repair Stations, restoring movement and health to your stacks that walk across them.

And then Tome of Faith as your starting book since it provides you with a spell that heals armies on the world map and a support enchantment that gives even more healing for your support units, helping a lot in dealing with both strategic and tactical attrition.

These are good suggestions. Coming to think about it a bit more Victory Rush/Scavenge Body Parts gives you HP back after a battle and the unit enchantment system which will be brought back from AoW 1&2 can buff units. So for example casting Stone Skin in the early game on maybe two units won´t break the mana bank and increase the survivability of the recipients.

Nothing is honestly so frustrating than battling weak trash mobs with Auto-combat and still losing one or more units. Too much micromanagement slows down the game too much.

I watched the medium stage gameplay today of the "Happy Elves" stream. Looks still good although one point of criticism was a dungeon with some sort of antimagic properties (would dispel buffs of attackers during each third round of combat). The whole stage was flooded with a foggy blue colour to highlight the magic property of the place but ruined the visual appeal of the scenario because it made identification of hexes and units more difficult. Even one of the devs acknowledged that fact.

Also nice that you still can change the topography of the map (like in Planetfall with Amazons & Dvar) with the Book of Fertility. One question though for the equivalent of Galactic Empire in AoW4:

Will you still be able to create characters in character creation and hire ONLY them for this mode? Oh and another question: Some Books will let you transform units & characters into something different (e.g.: Humans to Frostlings) but this will only apply to members of your starting race. So there will be no benefit in that regard from hiring characters from other races then?

And a third question regarding Galactic Empire: Will you be stuck with your starting race for the duration of this mode or will it be possible, like in Planetfall, to add Leaders from other races in order to be able to play other factions (e.g.: play Synthesis with Vanguard, Amazons & Assembly)?

Regular story and random scenarios are integrated into the Pantheon/Empire thingy by default, as far as I can tell, instead of Empire being a separate mode.

Races that aren't your starting ones can be transformed if you own (and I think vassalize too? not sure) enough of their cities, I forgot the amount, but I think it was at least 40%, though it makes me wonder what happens if two players each own an equal 40% of one race's cities.

Wasn't it always possible to get other leaders as heroes and requisition units (including colonizers if you put enough levels into their factions) from other races in Empire mode?

This is what I meant

Though you're leaving out part of that.

This full expansion, includes a new Culture, new Tomes of Magic, new Empire Building options and a new Story Realm.

Empire building options, not empire mode. This is far more likely to be new mechanics in the gameplay itself. Some new system that intertwines with conquest or ruling.

There is no "empire mode", because the Pantheon is this game's version of it, and the entire game is part of the Pantheon system. No matter what you play, be it story realms, custom realms, or even multiplayer, it all is part of the Pantheon system. There is no separate mode for this anymore, the entire game is this mode.

Well spotted! Thanks for the info

Hi all,
I have a question about extra premium content "Archmage Attire". Is this content exclusive for premium version or is only a set that instant unlock if we buy premium version? Would it be possible to get (or better said unlock) "Archmage Attire" for the people that only buy normal version.
I've tried to find any info about that but I haven't been able to find anything.

Thanks for your help

I bought my first CD version of AOW SM in 2006. That game really means a lot to me during my post graduate days. I even volunteered to join some other enthusiasts who took on translating the game in my country (I was in charge of translating unit/hero description texts). I played a lot of AoW 3 after I got a job and pre-ordered premium AOW PF but honestly that game never began to grow on me. Sci-fi just isn't my thing I guess.

Having watched every AOW 4 live stream on youtube I must say it has been so long since I ever felt any excitement for ANY video game! Glad to see Triumph has made so much progress over these years. After finishing this post I will go to steam and purchase the premium version.

I pre-ordered off your Paradox site (hoping you'd get a larger cut) However, I'm not seeing any Steam keys? Will the key itself not be released until go-live, or am I missing something?

Usually that's the case. You get the key shortly before the game goes live. That's my experience in the past anyway.
