Let's give credit where credit is due - the landing at Naples and rapid capture and holding of Foggia was key to the relatively easy victory. It was a nice strategy.

Combine that with the fact that the Allies had complete command of the seas and the skies, and there was little the AI could do. Their troops were isolated and out of supply - holding their own positions was probably the best they could do.

Historically, the Allies let the powerful German forces in Sicily get away, so they were constantly fighting them up the "boot" of Italy. Perhaps a human player would have instantly recognized the threat implicit in the Allied capture of Naples and rapidly abandoned Sicily to deal with it, but perhaps not.

IRL, the allies hadn't quite figured out all the details of amphibious landings. Jumping from Tunisia to Sicily was the limit of what they thought they could do safely - and even then they made mistakes, like not blockading the straights. I suppose they'd rather let the units run than fight them in Sicily, and no one in theater was aware of the benifits of island hopping. And you saw was happened at Anzio (again, IRL), so a real life jump to Naples would have probably worked the same way.

Most of the mistakes and missed opportunities in Italy were used to refine operation Overlord, however.

But I agree - the AI did impress me.

aprof, exellent AAR. Did you also guide US units, or do they have a mind of their own? :)

From the very first screen, it looked like he controlled only the British, since the Americans, Germans, and Italy each had their own selection option. Plus, there was mention near the end that the American forces had early on abandoned a province briefly and forced him to withdraw suddenly-overexposed forces (If he had ordered the withdrawal of the Americans himself, I don't think he would have left those forces there to be overexposed even briefly). I'm guessing I'm right, but it could be otherwise.

Answers to questions:

christianx, Amadís de Gaula, "difficulty level?": difficulty was default, normal/normal

Exterous, grumbold, "how'd the AI play?": as well as expected, given I was able to gain the advantage in units by isolating such a large portion of their force. To tell the truth, it was the third game of Husky I played that day. In the first, the Axis was lucky and beat back my initial invasion; in the second I had taken Sicily and was sealifting the UK forces to Naples and Taranto to support the US when an Axis counterattack retook Naples - Ariete and company from the north, the 16th Pz and 29th PG from the south. I think I would have been able to recover, but I didn't want to write an AAR about repeated attacks to try and take Cassino, so I restarted and got lucky in the third game.

pit "AI or human opponent?": AI opponent

Acesand8s1003 "why Axis and Allies in other scenarios and UK/US and Germany/Italy here?": I'll let the devs say why it's done the two ways, I'll only point you to my observation in the "game notes" portion of part 3, "I suspect that in cooperative multiplay this would have been a slugging match..."

Sindal, "I like the paradrop sprite": I love the paradrop sprite. It's animated if you can't tell. :D

Murmurandus, "how long did it take to complete the AAR?": I played the game on Friday of last week with all beta patches to that point - as I said I quit two games before this one. I played through the Canadians being repulsed from Cassino, then quit out to write up the first part. Then I played the rest of the game through the evening. Wrote the other two parts over the weekend.

Copper Nicus "looks better here than in the beta forum": It is nicer to have the screenies show in the text and not as attachments, isn't it?

Lord Martin: "I'm disappointed, was it a hard game?": normal settings, and this is the first real romp I've had in this game. I've played this scenario a lot through the beta (I loved the old Avalon Hill Anzio game, so this scenario was quite nostalgic for me). I've never had such an easy time before. Most often I get ashore in Naples and then bog down along the Volturno as the German forces build up across Italy. Sometimes I make no headway at all, sometimes I can get a nice little breakout, but rarely one this fast. Note that the game will run into 1945 and there are lots of Axis and Allied reinforcements that come into the game. I just beat them to Munich before they could get into the game.

czolgosz, Spruce, Zephyr 3 "you were only the UK right?": Yes, the US was AI controlled, as were Germany and Italy.

Thanks Met. :D

Very nice AAR
(despite the Germans losing Casino.... ;) )

As the the game has gone gold - are these sprites the final version?
We have yet to see different tank sprites for Germany and the naval sprites in their comic/Mickey Mouse design leave much to be desired.
Same goes for infantry. Are there no different sprites for different countries? And no special sprites for Mountain, Para, Mech, Mot etc.?

I can see myself resorting to counters only untill the modders create proper naval sprites (such as the Stony road BB,CA and Sub sprite for Germany).

Anyway congrazs on going Gold! :)

Ah, thanx for the answer!
I think I´m a bit less disapointed now :)

Have you played Operation Husky in cooperative MP?

No. But from the little I've read of the beta MP sessions, many post-game posts talk of having fun and comment on some of the startling battles and unexpected turns of event. Playing Husky with four human players - two to each side - might be quite fun. :)
