The bad, Germany Ai seemed to have mentaly retarded deployment.
Some of the toughest German divisions stuck defending worthless Islands

That was the starting, historical deployment. :p

Those units had just been withdrawn from Tunisia and were refitted and reinforced to defend Sicily. The ahistorical end-around the allies did to ignore Sicily and concentrate on the Italian mainland negated their effectiveness. They were isolated and cut off from supply.

After carefully reading the AAR, I'm not sure a human Axis player would have been able to do much better.

I noticed those black and white footage pictures in the battle-view panel (above where events like Encirclement and Breakthrough are displayed) are those video footage or just stills?

They look like stills that change if there's a combat event. Note that the two that are taken when there's no combat event are identical.

He mentioned several divisions were stuck not in Sicily but Corsica

Hmmm... I highly doubt the AI moved them there. If they did, that's a problem, but I don't even know if the Axis forces in this scenario have the physical ability to move their divisions to and from Corsica.

If there really were several German divisions positioned in Corsica, perhaps there's an OOB problem?

Wow. That is a pretty neat little scenario. Those scenarios are going to be a nice evening encounter..

For what it's worth: IRL in September 1943, Sardinia had the German 90th Motorized Division and the Italian Calabria, Bari, Sabauda and Nembo divisions. It's most likely these divisions aprof refered to.
On Corsica were the Reichsführer SS Division and the Italian Cremona and Friuli divisions plus some independent units, but as far as I can see Corsica is not in this scenario. :)

Good AAR BTW aprof. :)

Thank you - I knew someone would come up with the right OOB. IIRC, that German division was still there when the Allies liberated Sardinia, right?

IIRC the 90th PG was moved to the Italian mainland and added to the forces defending peninsular Italy in the late fall/early winter.

Nope, on the eve of the Italian armistice with the Allies, Pietro Badoglio (#%@&§:mad::mad: ) was too busy fleeing Rome to issue orders stating what actions the Italians should take against the Germans. So although Memorandum OP 44 with clear orders to fight the Germans had been prepared in advance, Badoglio never broadcast it. This meant that the Italian generals didn't know what actions to take against their recent allies, they had only some older rather vague orders to "resist attacks from whatever quarter they come".
So General Basso on Sardinia allowed the Germans and the pro-German Nembo Division to leave Sardinia and sail to Corsica. On Corsica, General Magli had decided to fight the German panzers and eventually received Free French reinforcements, but in the end the Germans managed to evacuate to the mainland.

Interesting. I'll admit that I don't know very much about the Italian campaign. I've been waiting for Rick Atkinson's book on the subject, hopefully not in vain.

I must say that this is top notch stuff, both AAR and game!

Wow. Just wow.

Shame HOI2 isn't coming out before Christmas. Then I'd know what to give everyone this year. :D

I can answer a lot of the question raised so far, but I'm unsure as to how much I can say. NDA issues and all. But I'll need an OK from Johan before I saying anything specific..

Well that certainly sounds good :) It's great to have a game with such active, engaging and helpfull betas and developers don't you think?

Something I forgot to mention in my first post:

At Rise: General Harold Alexander is found at a washstand rinsing his hands, General Montgomery enters.

"Ah! Harold, there you are. I've been wanting to talk to you about the Sicily operation. I've been giving it a good deal of thought..."

Been watching Patton, have we? :)

Classic movie, that.
