A Burgundian circle was historicaly created in 1512 so it can be concidered an integral part of the HRE. Remind yourself that we do not speak about the Duchy of Burgundy but the Lowlands as well as the County of Burgundy

Is it really plausible to make a Burgundian circle in the early 1500s?
Depends on the situation. A Burgundian circle can only be created if Burgundy is in Imperial hands so 1512 is the EARLIEST date but probably It will be created much later unless the Emperor already controls the Netherlands. The event would be slept as soon as the Netherlands gain their independence.

Then maby an event that would make the player decide weather he wants to incorporate Bohemia the quick and rash way (no - cent but some kind of rebelions) or the long and peacefull way (-cent but no rebelions). Plus i think that we should create an event taht would trigger somewhere in teh early XVII, which would change the culture of some provinces to german rather than giving the germany czech culture. The same with dutch.

You know I was going to say that I don't really see the point on the first part of your post beyond adding some drama for the player; but then I thought a bit more about it.

Bohemia was not a big practitioner of serfdom!

So, the player can choose to take a hit to centralization and not get the rebellions since he is not going to impose serfdom on a free-ish people, or he can impose it and get everyone and his uncle roaming the countryside in a state of rebellion.

As to culture... It all depends on whether or not you want to essentially wipe out Czech. If you have Germany acquiring Czech culture they will be tolerant of it and it will survive and thrive to a far greater degree then if you have the former Czech provinces suddenly become German.

And since I find ethnic cleansing a bit distasteful...I prefer the getting Czech culture route.

Now in the case of Dutch, I am more in favor of the provinces going to German rather then Germany getting Dutch because of the time frame. The residents of the Low Countries did not stop identifying as Germans until the late 15th century, which nicely corresponds to their being ruled by Burgundy. Now the formation of the unified HRE/Germany as it is presently setup can only take place not to long after that in the very early 16th century. That would bring the "Dutch" back under German rule with the formation of the Burgundian circle. And that would probably tend to undo some of the cultural separation since it has only happened very recently and is likely very weak at this point.

IIRC, the AGCEEP FAQ stated that Burgundy was not really considered an integral part to the HRE by this time and as such the team orignally decided against an event for the creation of a Burgundian circle for that reason. Is it really plausible to make a Burgundian circle in the early 1500s?
Yes it is, and if you google a map of the Imperial circles as they were proposed and somewhat created IRL...you will find a Burgundian circle.

What I think the team was trying to do really was limit the event.

Just a comment: Do not assume that the Dutch will become independent, nor that the events that transpired to cause them to seek independence will take place.

There is no reason to assume regardless of their religion, or ethnicity that the rulers of a unified HRE are going to tax the living snot out of them in the same way that the Austrians and Spanish did unless the Emperor is Hapsburg.

It is just as likely that they would remain in the Empire and that the colonial events that the Dutch republic saw would need to be modified to a degree for the HRE as a whole. But I would agree that it would probably be safest to have that dealt with by having the HRE release HOL as a vassal, not to mention easier.

But Dutch independence like so many other things in the game are NOT guaranteed events to happen.

As a matter of fact beyond 1419 the only things that we can guarantee are going to happen in any game of EU is the birth and death of monarchs, and then only because the game does not have a different way of dealing with those besides the real history. All other events are variables.

and speaking of variables...

It might be a good idea to have a plan for inclusion of Helvetia just in case they lose the Swabian war, or the war doesn't take place, or they have been vassalized by one of the members of the empire and have +150 relations or some other set of circumstances that make it unlikely to a great degree that they have maintained or established any significant kind of independence.

My suggestion would be to include them in the Swabian circle and then give an additional event to make a choice on whether or not you wish to allow them some degree of Reichfrei status on top of that which would give an additional tax hit, or increased rebellion risk and continuation of the area having Swiss culture. If you bring them in and allow them to maintain their Reichsfrei status then they should go Upper German.

I am not so sure that it would be even a likely event that the reformed Empire would seek to reincorporate Italy, but they might. I don't know if it is really worth expending much brain sweat on thinking about that at the moment though but it may come up in more games then we can anticipate. Especially if Austria takes the "B" choice in regards to Milan.

IF Helvetia will be included it deserves a much more independent status than even Poland since the Helvetian were not at all friends of the Emperor. It is an OPTION to let them remain "reichsunmittelbar" or "reichsfrei" thus associated with the Empire but I can not imagine that they would be integrated as closely as for example Bohemia or the Netherlands unless the Habsburgs have annexed Helvetia some time before the unification and even then I think they deserve a special treatment without "German" cores on the Helvetian provinces.

Concerning Italy I would not favour annexiation and or even vassalisation but just some kind of influencing Italian policy through indirect means and establishing allys within the princedoms and republics kinda like the Habsburgs have done. This would keep the Status quo in Italy without damaging the balance.

Concerning the Netherlands I staunchly defend the Dutch revolts especialy since those lands are rich and almost all important nations get the revolt events so I think Germany should not get an "unfair" advantage in this region.

Concerning Poland I personaly support a German expansionist line in this area and again this is to support some kind of semi-historical outcome in the area with Poland-Lithuania loosing much of it's territory with the slight difference that Germany and not Russia "occupy" the Royal Polish territorys and the Holy Roman Emperor not the Russian Tzar adopts the title "King of Poland".

Concerning the outlined event chains for Bohemia and the Dutch provinces I would like to know wether we should actualy start to create them or wether there are alterations needed

Regarding Helvetia: The Hapsburgs before the start of the game had done a pretty good job of ticking off the Swiss, but they had not quite completed the job so to speak. It is quite possible, as I have seen in more then a few games for Austria to vassalize them, even peacefully so; thus I think we need to consider the possibility of the relationship between the Empire and the Swiss playing out differently. Perhaps the safest and easiest way to handle it is upon the formation of the HRE, Helvetia has an event triggered much in the way the reaction events are triggered for France etc. the event would give them three or four possible choices, and the order of them would change based upon conditions in the game.

If we have the historic or quasi historic route of animosity with the Hapsburgs, and the Emperor IS a Hapsburg, we can write off the Swiss joining the Empire as the "A" choice. But we could leave it a "B" in this situation, since they might not think that they could stand against the whole might of the empire. IN either case they would retain Swiss culture and just generally be a pain in the Empires ass.

If you have a situation without the animosity (has good relations with her nearest neighbors in the Empire say 140 or so), and the Emperor is not Austrian; I don't see why they would not join as there has not been enough water under the bridge yet in the relationship between Helvetia and the Empire in this set of circumstances for them to want to cut themselves off from the rest of the German speaking world. They just aren't pissed off enough to make that kind of break.

Then you have a kind of middle of the road situation where the particulars might shift around a bit and the best possible "A" choice would be for them to become a vassal OF but not PART of the Empire.

Best case scenario you have what was part of the Empire, and even they admitted that they were, rejoining the Empire fully so there would be cores. Worst case? You have the historic break away, no cores, no cultural shift.

In regards Italy:

I tend to lean toward your position, by the time the reforms were on the table everyone in Germany knew that Italy was a lost cause, and although there was a lot of wealth there it was not worth the hassle. Especially since you would have to schlep all the way over the Alps on horseback if you were lucky!

The Italian question is a good one. Perhaps it deserve a more in depth event chain all its' own? Here is what just popped into my head:

"A" choice for an event for lack of a better title; the Italian question: Do nothing. Leaves everything as it is no fuss no muss.

"B" and "C" would however lead you down a couple of different paths; one would be to reestablish control over territory you wear the crown of. Or relinquish it to a trusted deputy, and by that I mean the Dukes of Savoy who as Vicars for Italy would be the logical choice. Heck could throw in a "D" option to give some finer tuning possibilities. "A" would do nothing, "B" attempt to reestablish vassalage which would do just that with each of the various states, "C" would be pass the crown of Italy over to your loyal vassal the Dukes of Savoy, or "D" show them who holds the Iron crown of Lombardy....

And in closing I will end with the Dutch.

The reason that other countries get the Dutch revolts is to force the creation of the Netherlands and for no other reason. It has ZERO basis in anything else other then a heavy handed way of making sure that a country needed for the later part of the game will be there.

As such they are not defensible from a historic point of view and only marginally from a game point of view. At the very least the player should be given a choice on how much blood he wants to try and squeeze out of the Dutch turnip to justify the revolts. But they don't. And I am not a huge fan of that kind of deterministic hooey. And that is all the revolts happening to other nations is: Hooey.

Although I am not a fan of determinism in the sense of predetermined fates of every country (Britain loosing HYW each time for example) I think the German player would not apreciate a game wich is something like a big birthday party for the HRE getting tasty gifts each year. Helvetia for example was at this point already fond of their relative indepences. While they would not sever their ties with the Empire totaly they would react harshly to anyone trying to take their autonomy away.

Italian Question (appearing some time after GER is formed):
Text: My Lord now that our reforms have provided us with a stable powerbase within Germany we may reconsider our position to the Imperial fief within Italy. While a direct integration within the structures created in Germany would be difficult due to the long absence of Imperial authority in Italy we may try to influence Italian peninsula via a carefull alliance policy. A third option would be to seek the support of the Duke of Savoy. If we would entrust him with the authority within Italy we may success in bringing the lost sheeps back into the fold.

Option A: A direct intervention is to dangerous. Use Intrigue and a bit of force to influence the Italians. (result: Events to influence the Italian policys
Option B: The Duke of Savoy shall be our vicar (result: event for Savoy to choose, Savoy gets some bonuses to unite Italy and eventualy becomes an ally or vassal of the Empire)
Option C (Fantasy): There is but one Empire and one ruler. (result: annexiation of Italy via brute force)

As for the Netherlands they were an important player in world policys after their independence and their enterprises influenced the decision of many courts just by setting an example thus I am reluctant to make it all to easy for teh Empire to hold onto the Netherlands as regular territory especialy since many of the colonys wich should go to the Netherlands would be unclaimed unless the Dutch East Indian Company/Imperial Dutch East Indian Company represented by the Netherlands or Holland would be released as vassall. And even in this case It would be too much of a free gift unless the Emperor encounters resistance. Last but not lest the religous differences in Germany were not entirely dependent of it's structure. France also suffered a war of religion thus I can without any difficultys imagine that we have something like a Thirty years war with the Netherlands trying to use this oportunity wich for a very long time had some kind of autonomy and resisted the Burgundians and Habsburgs alike.

Last but not least we shall remember that not beeing annexed by Germany does not exclude you from the Empire. At the start of the scenario Burgundy is fully independent but no player would consider it an independent kingdom (only those who do the mistake and refer to the Austrian Archduke as "King of Austria" -.- ). Thus even an "independent" but pro-German Helvetia could be considered as part of the Empire wich kept or expanded it's autonomy.

I understand your points regarding the Netherlands et al. And I find the Italian event series to be a good idea. The point I am trying to make about the Dutch is that logic should dictate the flow of events and not considerations of what the "game" needs. And by that I mean; it is a regrettable side effect of the inclusion of the Dutch in the Empire that some, most or all of the Dutch colonial events may be lost. Different histories have different outcomes and we need to become somewhat comfortable with that.

And none of these "gifts" will be free... the HRE is going to build up a substantial BB even from inheritance events, the formation event is going to cripple her relations (on average since the "A" choice is what it is for them) with her neighbors, and she is going to be a decentralized mess for about a century afterwards. We can if need be increase the odds that France and Poland are going to attack her while she is weakest, and continue to harass her for quite awhile.

Inclusion of the Dutch into the Empire would necessitate events that would tempt the HRE into engaging in some of the Dutch colonial events or possibly releasing the VOC as a vassal (give them Amsterdam set a flag and boost the provinces manpower and revenue to simulate Imperial subsidy of the enterprise). But at some point the VOC would be reabsorbed into the Empire and given the end date of the VOC historically that would make the most sense to use for that time; it however IIRC is not a very good time for the empire to have some additional BB added given the likeliest outcome and wars.

With Helvetia in the best case scenario of them coming into the empire fully I would expect that the event would reduce the tax value and manpower of the provinces even more then the events for creating one of the other circles. This would simulate the provinces maintaining substantially more autonomy then lets say the Pfalz or Austria. I would say we could do it with vassalage but I have seen far to often vassals break away and it should be a bit harder then that in this circumstance.

Come on nobody else interested in events for Germany but me and Bob ???
I don't feel like working on a refined chain of events for the various situations when there is so little interest ...

Whether by bribery, promises of protection or dire threats, a majority of the szlachta were persuaded to vote for the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. He agreed to confirm the Constitution of Radom and The privileqes within the Polish crown lands granted by The Statute of Piotrkow but despite these promises, the end result was that within a few decades, Poland became just another appendage of the growing realm of the Emperor."

Polish nobiles started to believe in myth that they are descendants of an ancient nomadic people named Sarmatians. That gave name to this cultural movement - Sarmatism. Sarmatism was famous for its unique 'Polish' costumes (in fact it was a mixture of Hungarian and Turkish costumes), art, way of life and even way of speaking in intentionally incorrect Polish. Unfortunately, soon the main virtues of Sarmatism degenerated. Patriotism turned into xenophobia, hospitality into massive drunkenness, love of tradition into social and political conservatism, pride into ferocity. Sarmatism did not affect only the westernmost parts of the country. Elsewhere it went out of fashion in the second half of 18th century when Poland returned to the Western ways.

Well, what I was thinking wasn't really events for a Post Formation but a alternative formation of Germany, by the Hussites, that would keep them as vassals. Looks a bit crazy nah? :eek:o I haven't think about the Post Unification, but I will do it soon. ;)

Here I am ready to try an revival of this thread.

During the past few months and as a result of a discussion with Truchses I have come to the following conclusion concerning the Netherlands and Italy:

At he very beginning shortly after teh formation of Germany by through the Reichsreform the Player will get this event:

event = {
id = 336190
trigger = {
flag = Germany_reform
}
random = no
country = GER
name = "Choice of Policy"
desc = "After the Emperor had successfully pushed through the first set of Reforms he had to decide what policy to pursue towards Bohemia, Italy, the Netherlands and towards it's neighbours. Essentialy there were three factions with different ideologys. The Imperials (Reichsritterschaft and minor nobility) who wanted to restore Imperial power to it's full degree and pursue an agressive foreign policy, the Nobility who proclaimed that the Emperor should focus on the territory north of the Alps and pursue a carefull foreign policy and the Clergy wich wanted the Emperor to focus on his German crown lands."

It will sleep the original "End of the Teutonic Order events" Since I doubt that Albrecht of Hohenzollern would have such an easy time secularizing the Orders territorys in Prussia with an Emperor who is backing the TO. An alternative and plausible series of events is already created.

Action A) will result in an expansive Empire participating and beeing active in all it's nominal territorys including Italy, Burgundy and Bohemia.
Action B) will result in an Empire wich focusses it's attention on the territory north of the Alps with only minor interference in Italy.
Action C) will result in the eventual formation of a German national state instead of the multi-cultural Empire created by A) or B)

Netherlands:

1st They are going to become a part of "Germany"
2nd No Dutch Revolts will occur but instead a war with Spain triggered by an attempt of Carlos I. of Spain to give titles to his son Phillip. In our timeline he was forced to accept a compromise. In combination with religious conflicts (revoltrisk) and splitted into several phases it will decide about the final status of the Netherlands
3rd If "Germany" is victorious it will get the option to release the Netherlands as autonomous part of the Empire for colonization purposes.
The Netherlands, after aquiring enough colonial territory will be changed into an Imperial version of the VOC changing the capital and giving the continental possesions back to Germany.

Italy:
Germany will get three options presented in two events. The Player may decide to make one of the German princes Imperial Vicar of Italy thus taking a direct route to the conquest of Italy (resulting in an Italian vassal state if successfull), confirming Savoy as Imperial Vicar and channel all efforts through this state (again an Italian vassal state will be the result but it would be much more independent -> Events wich could create tensions)

I have also closely followed the discussions about the Electors and how it may be possible to make ensure that Germany willl keep the Imperial title...
My answer is: With the current engine it is impossible thus if another nation then Germany becomes HRE we have to consider it's monarch just as one of the many pretenders. I also promote the removal of all provinces from the HRE to remove the undesirable Military access recieved by the Emperor (why should a French pretender for example get the right to move through the lawfull Emperor's land to reach Poland in times of War ?)

About Netherlands:

Why should the colonization be made directly by Germany? That would solve the BB problem when Germany annex them.

About Italy, there would be a option to annex the vassal state later?

And about the HRE system, remove is provinces is not a solution and this is a alternative scenario.

1st
HRE system:
Since the undynamic HRE system creates more problems that it solves why should we keep the provinces within the HRE ? Essentialy (and I have discussed this several times) the German King is the Emperor thus it is more than strange to see an anti-Emperor moving through the lawfull rulers's territory. Since most of the advantages gained by the Empero are dependent on the status of a nation as Elector the removal of the provinces would solve at least the Military access problem.

2nd
Netherlands:
Since the goal of this addition would be to keep some realism and a balance of power I think an indirect colonization by the Netherlands is the best way to go. Germany is and was a landbased country and the Empire will probably focus it's attention on Europe. Some minor direct colonization efforts would probably undertaken but it's goals would have been rather limited.

3rd
Italy:
Hmm ... I do not want to see a big Grey (Yellow ?) blob in Europe and I would prefer to keep Italy as a vassal state nevertheless the player will get the option to directly annex Italy to the Reich and in case of Savoie forming the Italian vassal state direct annexiation as a result of an unsuccessfull revolt could be possible I realy have to think about this but such an expansion should come at a price...

In 1521 through the Edicts of Worms and Brussels Karl handed the Austrian territories over to his brother Ferdinand I, while Karl kept Spain, the Italian possesions, the Netherlands, and America. Although Ferdinand freely ruled the Austrian state internally, he was still subordinate to Karl and had to pay homage to Spain as well as enact any policies of the Spanish Emperor. In 1556 when Karl abdicated his imperial status, the Austrian line of the House of Habsburg gained total independence from the Spanish House of Habsburg.

As result of Charles abdication Burgundy shall be directly anexed by Spain.
If Germany is victorious in the Spanish German wars Burgundy will be seceded to the Empire if the Spanish win the war Bohemia and Austria (?) will become independent and vassalized by Spain. In both cases the Imperial title will remain in German hands (as part of a compromise peace) but Italy will be out of reach for the Emperor (most events regarding Italy slept).

2 Questions:
Are there some Event IDs reserved for Germany ? We will desperately need some to ensure compatibility and since they are rather a plausible continuation of the Unification line (similar to the events following a English victory at the HYW) I think it is reasonable to ask for some.
Last but not least: May I submit the dynasty specific "flavour" wich are already done for the next version ?

Do it. :)

The historical way is screwed already with a successfull Reichsreform wich finaly would have given the Emperor the chance to reestablish his rule over the non-german parts of the Empire. If you can find a solution to let Germany keep the Imperial title once it has been formed I would be satisfied but having another legal Emperor than the legal King of the Germans is utterly unrealistic exept in situations of civil war. And seeing this illegal Emperor's troops moving through the rightfull souvereign's territory ... -.- no it would be too much for my eyes. Remember I am not advocating the removal of the electors but the removal of the HRE provinces to prevent the senseless military access.

Any comments concerning the events for the Burgundian Treaty and the "independent" Burgundy formed by it, representing the semi-independent Burgundian circle. How about the outlined Spanish-German war ...

Additionaly here is a refined series of the Bohemian inheritance allowing a Habsburg Emperor to get the Bohemian crown + czech culture and Wallenstein and a non-Habsburg Germany to get Bohemia as vassal with it's final integration into the Emperor's domains as result of the Spanish-German war.

And what about before the formation of Germany or if you don't want to form Germany? And if you're playing another country?

P.S. A way to stop other nations being emperor is making rebels the emperor.
