Most game I've played till now usually start with a very interesting portion, where you have to clear your area while fending off the occasional war from neighbor. Then the end is usually some big world war situation, everybody attack ing you.

But the middle is pretty meh, at some point I'm just not interesting in expanding anymore, more city is just more uninteresting micro, but I'm not quite strong enough to survive the full war, so I just kinda do nothing for awhile while producing new units and pushing the research. I might send some stack around the world to take out some silver/gold ruins, but those aren't that interesting and the reward rather poor if you don't annex them.

I think a DLC with strong PvE content would be nice, maybe some dungeon that have there own (small) map. Or fallen enchantress had this features where some portion of the map were overrun with high multiple high level monster who would leave very valuable land if cleared. Or warlock master of arcane had this cool DLC/separate system where you'd be constantly attacked by monster as the game would progress.

Yeah, this pretty much sums up my single player experience as well.
Then I started city spamming to make the game more interesting (more area to defend) but it is also more of the same like you said.
So I started playing multiplayer with friends which is a totally different thing.
In single player I do small maps now, and only use custom map options, set the interesting things to high.

Still, I agree, for a more "traditioal" player the game could benefit from a big PvE content DLC.

This Triumph. Their DLCs have always been loaded. You can definitely expect more down the line.

That being said, I can't agree it gets boring. There's always tons of quests to do.

I think in part it is also just a matter of presentation.

In an AOW, you had those interesting dark fortresses, those ruins, those entrances to the under world, and from their visuals they already were good at inviting you to be curious about what might be there. It was easily relatable: "Oh, old abandoned castle! I want to explore it's chambers". And then you had indoor encounters which gave a feel of "being inside the building".
The immersion was different and the topics were easier to grasp.

For Planetfall, however, I think similar "vibes" could be created through ancient alien bases that are deep underground, and visually more assets on the strategic map really stand out as something "larger than life", like a big dome surrounded by a shield, or an ancient pyramid like relic, or a crashed mothership that can be explored.
In part the generated map could also add to it by generating impassable mountain ranges where the interesting location is in a narrow path leading to the edge of the map and stuff like that.

I think it's really all about the player fantasy here.

I too usually single-play on small maps for a more dynamic, competitive game. This also makes the play time per game relatively shorter so I don't get bored micro managing 6 colonies every turn.
