Most game I've played till now usually start with a very interesting portion, where you have to clear your area while fending off the occasional war from neighbor. Then the end is usually some big world war situation, everybody attack ing you.
But the middle is pretty meh, at some point I'm just not interesting in expanding anymore, more city is just more uninteresting micro, but I'm not quite strong enough to survive the full war, so I just kinda do nothing for awhile while producing new units and pushing the research. I might send some stack around the world to take out some silver/gold ruins, but those aren't that interesting and the reward rather poor if you don't annex them.
I think a DLC with strong PvE content would be nice, maybe some dungeon that have there own (small) map. Or fallen enchantress had this features where some portion of the map were overrun with high multiple high level monster who would leave very valuable land if cleared. Or warlock master of arcane had this cool DLC/separate system where you'd be constantly attacked by monster as the game would progress.
