I'm curious to know what you Paradox team folks think about the fact that Civilization 5 and Fallout New Vegas are only available through Steam? Could you compare and contrast that with the fact that Warband (and it seems also Divine Wind) are/will be available both in a non-Steam and Steam version.

I MUCH prefer the option for either non-Steam or Steam versions, and I'm displeased with Bethesda and 2K about this.

Had a longer post in which I elaborate but the Papillon in my Lapillon bumped my keyboard and I lost all I had typed :( Will be happy to elaborate, but I fear you guys won't feel comfortable talking about this topic?

Oh, papillons are cute! Say hi from me?
About Steam, there are a lot of reason for why a game company would do that, and I suspect those reasons will be as many as the companies that does it. Piracy might be one. It is harder to pirate a game with Steam protection, and we all know how catastrophically hight the piracy ratings for PC games are.
A second thing might be that if you just have steam users, you know for sure that everyone always have the latest patch, which will remove a lot of support issues as well as frustrations.

For each game they will weight pros and cons and see if it comes out pro steam even though that means removing options from the gamers.

Kallocain, how do you guys evaluate the impact of Steam's delay on your sales of Divine Wind ?

Please tell me that you'll never go fully Steam, please ? :eek:o

Nah. They would never risk losing me as a customer. I carry too much weight in these parts.

But I'm on a diet.

I seem to recall that we cannot post links to other forums, but I wanted to let you guys know about some discussions over at the Bethesda Elder Scrolls forums. A Poll thread I started and a poll thread started by a guy named SteveDog. If someone wants to urls, PM me, or if it actually is okay to post them let me know, eh?

What If Skyrim is Steam Exclusive? Will you buy it? Poll: What if playing Skyrim requires Steam? (424 member(s) have cast votes)
Will you buy the game?
I will buy Skyrim if it requires Steam or not. (235 votes [55.42%])

I'd prefer to have a non-Steam option for buying Skyrim, such as the Beth online store. But I might buy it if it requires Steam anyway. (91 votes [21.46%])

I won't buy Skyrim if it is only available via Steam. (98 votes [23.11%])
Vote Edit this poll

The other poll had slightly differently phrased questions, and more questions, but it did not reveal dramatically differnet patterns for the questions that address the same thing.

Obviously a forum poll is not necessarily representative of the actual consumer population. However, given we are talking 20 to 40% of the respondents having reservations about being involved in Steam (if not resolved not to use it) I think all game publishers should be thinking hard about just how much of a cost in alienating a segment of their fanbase going Steam exclusive might involve.

Well, truth be said, i think i already have the answer to my question, as some time ago, it was Shams IIRC who said they would never go exclusive on one portal (and they have shown us they were doing the opposite, going from GG-only to all those portals).
Not to mention, that Steam's delay has probably hurt Paradox a little and might rouse some lack of trust ?

It'd be great if there were some public Civ5 stats on this. If I recall correctly, this is the most major title to be released Steam-DRM-only.

I saw figures suggesting it hadn't sold very well compared to Civ 4, at least early on. I doubt the fans' reaction would have done much to help. I'd be absolutely astonished if Paradox ever went down that road.

Not only you...we all would. And i am 100% sure, that no Paradox Game will ever be exclusive on Steam. At least not, as long Johan is Part of Pdox. Because he, and Frederik showed many times in the Past, that they dont like DRM´s. I think Johan even talked about Steam also. No, going back to a DRM-System...even to Steam-only would show everybody that they were wrong in the past. So i am sure, they never will. Sould be same with Brad Wardell (Stardock) and his Games (Galactic Civ2). If you ever say, we trust our customers, we dont need DRM´s you cant go exclusive for Steam or other DVD DRM´s, or you risk to get known as unreliable.

Naah....Paradoxgames will be avaliable on many sources, one of them Steam, and maybe more in the future....also always at Gamersgate. No fears.

But why do i answer here? ;) Its their thread.

After the epic fail that was Modern Warfare 2, I'll never get a Steam-only game again. So here's one customer that Paradox would lose if they ever went down that route.

+1 And here's another.

We always try to go for as many portals as possible.

More portals = more money.

That said Steam is a major priority since they are, by far, the most important digital portal. On rare occasions a game will be steam only (Lead and gold for instance) if there's no way for us to alter the game to run without steam. As you know steam has a LOT of additional tech that devs can use to improve their games.

As for late releases on steam/non-steam - shit happens, sometimes the portals mess up and sometimes we or the devs do.

If I go and visit Paradox HQ can I get everyones autograph?

I notice you have more "upcoming"(counting the online ones as well) games than "current". How does this reflect the growth Paradox have experienced over the past year*, and do you believe this high level growth will carry on in the same pace as it currently is?

Also, when is Svea Rike III/Crown of the North/Kongekamp getting it's long overdue sequel? :)

* As in how much are you geared as a publisher v game designer, are you stretching your marketing limits or do you have room for a lot more games, any advantages in expanding this much, etc.
