From what I've read over here and in Huzsic's FAQ, when you assault, you roll a d10. From your roll is subtracted the level of the fortress. So, if you are assaulting a level 2 fortress, your maximum roll is 8. OK. But that doesn't take into account the respective Siege Strengths, but I've heard that you shouldn't assault before there is a breach. In what way does a breach affect the outcome?

The reason I ask is that I usually have a set way of conducting war. I only use 45K armies (25K Infantry, 15K Cavalry, 50 Artillery). So obviously these armies are too large to conduct long sieges without suffering horrendous attrition. So I assault as soon as I enter the province, until morale goes down to "Weak". Then I wait for morale to reach full strength, then assault again. So on until it falls. From what I've read I'm not doing it right. Would I be better off sending in a force that is just equal to the supply limit and just sieging?

I'd appreciate all info on how this works and what is the best way to conduct offensive warfare.

First I should start with saying that all the following is (hopefully intelligent) guessing from my side =)

The breach means that you actually have made one or more holes in the fortress walls through which you can attack the enemy within.
The V shaped graphics showing in the siege screen is assuemed to represent this breach, and in the BG this meant that the defender did no longer benefit from the protection of the fortress (thus your d10 will once again be able to reach 10, no matter what level the fortress is).
