Here is an AAR with Brunei. Standard settings. I was going to turn off lucky nations but forgot to, oh well. I will do the introduction today and later in the week bring in some pictures and continue the AAR in detail. It is currently about 1610 and I started in 1399. Never having played in Asia or Malaysia I thought that Brunei would be fun, and she has been.

Brunei started in 1399 with a small army and a reasonable fleet, no allies or CBs. The Sultan looked around and eyed Malacca's COT with great interest. That trade rightfully belongs to Brunei. Troops were recruited, a few transports built and Malacca was insulted voraciously. Soon Malacca embargoed Brunei. This insult could not be born. The Sultan rallied his troops and declared war. The treacherous dogs of Aceh joined Malacca but the Sultan was not deterred. Malacca was invaded and the land route from Aceh to Malacca was blocked with the fleet. Malacca was quickly crushed and annexed and Aceh's fleet failed to break the blockade. A desperate struggle resulted in Aceh being soundly defeated and made a vassal of Brunei.

The newly owned COT was soon filled with Brunei traders and the Sultan contemplated what to do next. The formation of Malaya called him and he started planning his moves on Java.

More tomorrow.

The Sultan of Brunei having gained control of Malacca and vassaled Aceh contemplated his next moves. Majapahit sat on the island of Java to the south next to valuable unexplored territory. To solidify his situation a Royal Marriage was arranged with Makassar, research was directed into Government to achieve the required National Idea and all available trader slots were filled. A move toward innovation was taken to aid Westernization. The Sultan deemed the time was right, so marshaling his troops war was declared in 1411. Majapahit offered little resistance and it's two southern provinces were annexed and Bali was force released.

Infamy was getting high and money was low so a time of peace was required. During the peace I achieved a National Idea and took Colonial Ventures. I also built forts in all my provinces. In 1421 I discovered one west Java Province bordering my lands and started to colonize it. In 1426 I discovered the other border province. The last two Java provinces were discovered in 1436. By this time the first two provinces were self-sustaining. Colonization of the last two provinces were problematic, I had 5 colonists stored up and they all failed at a good 80%+ chance. The Sultan was not impressed and sacked his whole colonization Bureaucracy. This house cleaning helped and the last two provinces were colonized in 1438. The Sultan declared a grand Holiday and announced the formation of the great state of Malaya. At that time a personal union was formed with Makassar.

The Sultan was pleased and looking eastward at the rising sun decided to embark on a grand strategy of colonizing as much of the island provinces as he could. This would avoid dealings with the much larger Ming and problems with non-Sunni provinces.

More later with pictures.

Brunei 1438

The Sultan sat contemplating the future. He and his father before him had greatly enhanced the Sultanate's position in the last 40 years. Malacca had been annexed, Aceh had been vassaled, Malaya had been formed, Bali and Makassar were allies and Makassar was in a personal union with Malaya. However storm clouds threatened the nation. Manpower was extremely low so a war would be disastrous. In addition the heathen nations of the mainland were all in a grand alliance that would swamp Malaya if given the chance. Malaya must expand but must not be dragged into dangerous wars. There was only one chance, aggressively colonize the islands to the east.

To do this the Nations ideas must be changed. So to aid the expansion the Sultan waited until there was a full complement of settlers then changed from Colonial Ventures to Quest for the New World. He then recruited an explorer and a conquistador and switched back to Colonial Ventures. This threw the nation into a stability crisis so all resources were put into regaining stability and a level 5 stability adviser was recruited.

The Sultan knew he would not live to see the fruits of his planning but his grandchildren would. Many years later his grandson surveyed a greatly expanded nation.

By 1478 Taiwan, the Philippines, parts on New Guinea and the Celebes and other islands had been colonized. Manpower was plentiful, the nation was stable but inflation was beginning to creep in.

As an aside, how do I delete previously uploaded image files from my attachment manager? I wanted to add an image to this post but I seem to have exceeded my quota. Manager says I have used 9.09 of 9.54. The uploaded images are older so they can be removed with no big loss. Thanks.

I don't understand, those look like image hosting sites. What I was asking was about the manage attachments option at the bottom of the message window. If you press that button the "manage window" opens showing the images you have uploaded and used in previous messages. I need to delete the images listed there or I can't upload any more to show in a new messages as I am out of room. I'm sure there is an easy answer to this but I have failed to find it. Thanks.

Well, that finally worked. More images later, be prepared for the most boring 100 years or so ever as Brunei colonizes like a mad fiend and avoids conflict. Don't worry, eventually war will come on three continents.

From 1478 forward Brunei went through the next century almost in a fog with very little to disturb her constant flow of colonists to the islands to the east. By 1514 all the islands of Malaysia, New Guinea and the Philipines had been colonized and a start had been made on Australia and New Zealand.

In the 1530s the Sultan made a momentous decision. The nation needed to modernize. For over two generations the Sultanate had been looking toward the future by encouraging innovation and centralizing authority and eventually changing to an Imperial form of government but she needed to do more. New ideas must be found and the only way was to open communication with new peoples. To do this explorers were sent west to the rumored jungle lands. Many new nations were found and eventually boats with strange light-skinned people were met. In order to expedite trade of ideas an outpost was needed closer to these peoples. The nation of Benin provided the opportunity when she declared war on a neighbor who was our friend. Benin was conquered, annexed and her coastal province was sold to one of the light-skinned peoples from a strange land called Navarra. By 1538 the nation was ready and a grand cultural shift, later called Westernization was begun.

By 1565 two rounds of Westernization were complete and the third and last was about to happen. Expansion had extended deep into the Pacific Island and also the Islands of the Indian Ocean.

By 1580 the peaceful times were over. Westernization was complete and even the military had been modernized. The Hawaiian islands had been colonized and these served as a jumping off point to expand into the great lands to the east of the Pacific. The Aztec nation was discovered and much of it's land taken but some land was lost to strange creatures called French and many other different nations were contacted. The coming years promised to be as exciting as the previous century was peaceful.

I have left off many details of the last century as they were of no real significance. Three wars with Austria, one with Bohemia and one with Portugal were pretty boring as only an occasional small fleet showed up which was crushed. Eventually everyone in the European alliances involved White Peaced out. Lots of rebellions and a good amount of inflation (got up to 15%) from the minting required to support all those colonies were painful. In any case peacetime is over and the American wars are about to begin.

Quite the empire you have there. I would not have to want to defend it though with all those islands ;). I wonder: how many ships do you need to maintain tariffs?

At this stage of the Empire I didn't need many, I think I was at about 76% Tariff efficiency which I got to 100% fairly quickly due to ships built for pirate suppression duty. That didn't last long and I now need more ships as the next few posts will detail. At 1615 I am currently only at 80% Tariff efficiency, due to massive expansion on the west coast of both America's. Fleet building has been slow due to costs of boats and colony maintenance but I'm getting there. I'll put up the next few updates tomorrow or Wednesday.

Just as an FYI the next stages of Empire development were;

North America west Coast colonization.
Inca conquest and money extortion
Central/South American colonization
Wars with Austria, France and more Aztec conquest.
Multiple wars of expansion in Southeast Asia.

It was the year 1588 and the time of relatively peaceful expansion was at an end for the Sultanate of Brunei. Aside from a war with the Aztecs and another with the Incas in the eastern lands called America by the Europeans, there had only been minor revolts and wars with distant nations involving little combat for a hundred years. The declaration of war by Austria and her allies shattered this peaceful colonial expansion. The Sultan consulted with his advisers on whether to make peace or stand against the infidel aggressors. The decision was made, if Brunei retreated now they would never hold the American colonies. A stand would be made.

The French made the first move advancing into the Aztec territories. A force moved to intercept and chose to wait and fight on ground of our own choosing while the French wore themselves out in siege.

The northern coastal colonies were spared combat.

Brunei1588B_zps280fe295.png

As were the southern Inca lands. The Sultan had wisely spared some of the Incan lands and collected large amounts of tribute to not annex them.

The aggressors only sent an occaisional small fleet to harass the homelands. These ships never saw Europe again.

Contact with the Europeans enabled the Sultan to get information on many of the lands in far Europe and inland Asia.

Information was also gathered on areas of the America's occupied by the aggressors.

The war with Austria would end with a white peace with some former Aztec lands being annexed. Brunei was also drawn into a war by her ally Persia. While Brunei was busy fighting the fleets of Vijayanagar, her vassal Aceh lost a province. This would not be forgotten.

The Incans were also reminded why they should stay in their place. This lesson cost them much treasure. Ayutthaya was also reminded to keep her place and the entire Malayan peninsula became part of Brunei.

The heathens of Southeast Asia would not keep their place so a lesson was taught and much of the area cam under Brunei control.

Unfortunately the trouble making Austria declared war again and brought in many allies. The Sultanates African possessions were invaded.

Brunei1603B_zps23dd55ae.png
[/IMG]

France entered the war but soon lost two of her colonies and had her armies defeated and lands occupied. Much of Central America had been colonized during this period and the Europeans were colonizing many areas as well..

The war continued for many years eventually ending favorably for Brunei.

After having much interference in her mainland possessions Brunei lost patience with Champa and went to take the rich coastal provinces. Ten nations came in to aid Champa and a desperate war ensued.

The ever expanding Vijayanagar led the alliance and invaded the home islands.

For once the America's weren't involved and the colonization continued.

It is 1613 and the Sultanate is at peace for the first time in decades. The Vijayanagar led war ended with much of Southeast Asia annexed and Vijayanagar's fleet crippled but her lands still intact. The Sultan was determined to continue to advance toward a land route to his greatest threat.

Brunei1613A_zps6bab093c.png
[/IMG]

The American expansion continued unabated but conflict with the Europeans was undoubtedly coming soon. The eastern army would have to be strengthened. Luckily a border dispute gave Brunei a core on Yucatan allowing building in the new world.

So we are now caught up and we'll see where it goes. Brunei is determined to deal with Vijayanagar but it may take a long time. War in the America's is coming again but hopefully the Incans can be fully annexed before then unless they still have enough money to buy Brunei off.
