Before posting this I searched the forum under "resolutions" and "screen size" but found nothing and others are able to play at higher than 800X600 resolution. I just got the game two dys ago so I am not entirely familiar with it yet.

If I try to play at anything higher than 800X600 I get a CTD. I can get as far as the main screen were I can choose a campaign or saved game, once I press start I get a CTD.

My desktop is set at 1152X864 (32 bit colour) and I have tried resetting the desktop size to 1024X768 and 1240X1024 (and I also tried both 32 bit and 16 bit colour) to match my choice of resolution for the game. In other games I play I can change the size settings with no problem. I have the lastest drivers for my video card.

I have tried this both under HOI vesion 1.00 and HOI 1.01 and I get the same result. I am sorry if someone has reported this already but I searched and found nothing similar. Thank you.

One other thing, I bought my game from Gamespot and there are already two saved "Germany" games included with the game!! Should this be so? I was surprised.

Here are my system settings:

Intel 1.8GHZ
Asus G-Force 2 Video Card
Japanese Windows 2000
768 MB Ram

I spent hours yesterday trying this all out, I did not think it was a bug at first but instead some kind of software conflict in my computer but alas I was stumped so I thought it might be some kind of bug or something with Japanese windows that might be a known issue.

However the good news is that your post gave me an idea.... that I uninstall HOI, the latest Nvidia drivers and my Asus software and then put the drivers, Asus back in and then HOI (in varying orders until it worked) and now it is great except that it does not work at the very highest resolution setting but that really does not bother me. Thank for your help Ryeuken.

Thanks for moving it to the support forum. I think it belongs here.

Ok, the story. I downloaded the latest (version 41.09) Nvidia Drivers and installed them, (the computer then did a warm reboot). After that HOI worked at the second highest resolution of 1024X768 (but not at 1280X1024). I then went out for an hour and turned the computer off. After doing a cold reboot to start the computer up, HOI no longer worked at any resolution other than 800X600. I again tried to uninstall everything and reinstall them all again and still the same problem exists. I spoke too soon in my last post.

Settings:

Intel 1.8 GHZ
768 MB Ram
Asus G Force 2 MX/MX 400
Nvidia Drivers Version 41.09

I have tried everything I cna think of but nothing works. It seems as though HOI does not remember that my computer has Nvidia installed after a cold boot but but does respond and remember that Nvidia is there if I reinstall it again. As soon as the power goes off it does not work.

Thanks for helping

It might be a driver problem - maybe when you installed the new ones it "mixed" with the old one a bit, which can happen.

What you might want to try is to uninstall your driver first - you do this by overriding any driver search and installing the driver "Standard VGA" instead of the usual nvidia driver. Then reboot. Once back in Windows, install the newest nvidia driver. This should ensure a "clean" driver installation.

Let us know how it goes!

Thanks for your help.

I tried that. I uninstalled HOI, the ASUS drivers that drive the hardware and the latest version of the Nvidia drivers (version 41.09). I then installed the Asus hardware drivers (without them my display is that of an old EGA computer), the computer was then warm rebooted. I then installed the Nvidia drivers and the computer was then warm rebooted. After that I installed HOI again. It worked, I could get higher resolutions. However once I turned the computer off and then turned it on again it did not work anymore, I could then only get 800X600.

Any ideas anyone?

I'm assuming that your version of DirectX is 8.1 and that yuo've run the standard video diagnostics on it...?

At a guess I'd say there's something weird going on in your BIOS somewhere that somehow gets overridden in a warm reboot but is lost on cold. Have you tried looking to see if there's an update? What BIOS do you have and what kind of controls do you have over it on start-up. I think I'd start there...

After doing the cold reboot are you able to increase the resolution for Windows beyond 800x600? You might also want to double check the hardware in your system configuration, and make sure it lists only one video adapter and one monitor.

Ok,

Mr T thanks for the advice on the BIOS.

As for the computer, after cold reboots, warm reboots, anything else it is fine, it works fine for any other thing at any other resolution. I have the monitor set for 1024X758 normally and I can watch movies, DVDs and play other games at any resolution I want to. It just seems to be HOI that is causing me trouble.
When I refer to not being able to go beyond 800X600 I am referring to for HOI only, as I said evrything else works fine.

Thanks for all your help. I haved tried everything I can think of, I will try that BIOS idea.

Another thing to try is renaming the AVI folder to AVIBack, this will tell us if it is a Blink player conflict. You will skip the intro movies but should be able to play the game.

My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 755DF. The monitor driver is the manufacturers driver not the standard windows one.

Thanks for your help with this, I guess I will have to settle for playing at 800X600 only.

Thanks.

Did you try renaming the folder though, Other users have reported success with doing this and being able to use other resolutions.

I have this problem too. Everytime I want to play HoI, EU1 or EU2 I need to change my resolution to 800x600 everything else crashes the game. This has happened to me on three different systems with three different operating systems (98se, 2000 pro and XP pro), so I hardly think is't a hardware or driver issue.

Just my 5 cents...

Edit: Renaming of the avi folder worked for me!
