Hey all :)

Started today with one "simple" goal. Only bring 2 colonists to mars and no further passengers than that. After getting to Sol 100, i only managed to get 13 martian born colonists. I played as Church with Doctor commander. Can anybody else beat my score? If so, teach me master! :)

Im gonna build 1 wonder or die trying :D

Only 13 people to run your colony over the course of 100 Sols? Sounds really painful. lol I loved the Banished Adam & Eve challenge though so I'm up for this. Hopefully I'll have some time in the next day or two try it for this game too.
 
16 martianborn at Evaluation. Also Church/Doctor.

I had a fairly inefficient start as it's my first time with low-funding and low-sci and I just dived right in without scanning before landing, first colonist only arrived on Sol 36. I was bolstered significantly by getting Service Bots as an early breakthrough (which feels a bit like cheating for this challenge), so I was able to immediately put my colonists (an unspecialized sexy woman and a male medic) in the first 2 shifts of the infirmary. I just about ran out of Electronics not long after (drone hub maint after building the service bot upgrades) with no cash on hand, but quickly got a rare metals extractor off the ground and sent the unspecialized colonist out there, extracted just enough to bring in a few electronics. The first kid grew up to be Composed so I sent her right out there as her sanity wouldn't suffer for it, and recalled the first to work in the infirmary again. Importing food is quite viable for a small pop, which is nice.

This was definitely something different, I've had fun despite or perhaps because of the silly mistakes I made :) And it gave me an excuse to try out a sponsor I hadn't really planned to.

Service Bots

Oh nice ! I did not have any significant breakthroughs in my game. What i feel is more key, is the luck of getting a better male/female ratio. I have on sol 100, 2 males and the rest females :D What if i had 50/50? I seem to get a large amount of female babies, im not sure how the babymaking system in this game works, but i thought, that those 2 males would have the time of their lives lol. But i can only assume that it matters to have a even ratio. so you could in theory, save the game frequently, and fall back on that if you get the "wrong" baby lol. Do not quote me out of context here :D
 
Has anybody done any serious testing on birth rate factors? I'm still unclear on whether added comfort (beyond the basic 70 or 55), actually increases the birth rate.

I was trying to do a one passenger rocket challenge and even with some sexy people, the birthrate seemed pretty low. Infirmary/art store/sexy people and birthrate was just slow.
 
I did Adam & Eve challenge but with Paradox (Doctor) instead of Church AND also salvaged my only rocket after they landed. (total 4 rocket landings including the first)

I failed on my first attempt because all of the 7 people born were female by the time my male founder became a senior :(
But my 2nd attempt went smooth and I would have succeeded even without getting the Phoenix Project, which helped a lot (ressed both of my sexy founders:D)

Of course I made it easy for myself and picked a flat map with lots of resources and 4 in meteors, this way I could build everything just on metal maintenance (and polymer for 1 battery) since fuel and concrete can be turned off once you have enough.

Here's some tips:

-your founders should be no specialization/engineer/officer, something that doesn't require drinking or luxury, preferably with sexy trait and/or something that gives extra comfort like hippie. some flaws like whiner are accepted, just don't get anyone with a special interest which you can't provide for (Gamer, Alcoholic, etc..)
-have founders work in a grocer, when people are born put them in infirmary and diner
-bring food in advance, you won't have people working in farms until those 3 buildings are filled with 2 people each
-smart home is a thing here, although be careful because it has electronics maintenance (i had to salvage mine after i got to under 30 electronics)
-only start thinking about factories once you have diner/grocer/infirmary and farm all filled with people and some kids on the way with a food surplus, you want to build all 3 in a short period since none of them are self sustaining
-don't separate your people too early, i.e. if you want to mine rare materials and your original dome had none, move your entire population there instead of just miners

So that proves my earlier point, that the birthrate has something to do with a more even spread of males and females. If you get 50/50, u should be pumping out kids at a much faster rate. Please anyone, if you are lucky to get close to 50/50, let us know if you experience more birth than before :) Also, game seems to push out far more females than males lol. It would only make sense to me, that 2 males and 10 females, would produce more kids than 6 males and 6 females, so it would be very helpful to know more about this mechanic.

I were looking into LUA sources some days ago. Every point of comfort after 55/70 increases birthrate.

- Church of the New Ark as sponsor.
- Ecologist as commander, Handing Gardens from start (Relaxation and Exercise with 100 comfort)
- Grocer start to work after first child grow. All interests satisfied again.
- We dont care about Doctor/Infirmary bonus, because our comfort will be 100 in this setup.

Its possible to reach very big population in this setup at sol 100. I will try it soon :)

Yeah, I think it's because the game treats them as couples. So where 1 male and 5 females would be one couple, 3 males and 3 females would be 3 couples? Not sure.

Great post, my hints were for a more difficult game without the church bonus and without any rockets to resupply the two founders, but yours are better for a "getting most people born before sole 100" from just two people. Still have some comments though:

-I think the sexy traits outweighs the small comfort drop they would get from not satisfying an interest, and you are unlikely to get two sexy officers of opposite sexes and the correct age (without Doctor they will age much faster). I'd even take a sexy Engineer over one because he will have all his needs taken care of as soon as the first child is born. (not sure here either, only speaking from personal experience but do let us know if you test it)
-Grocer + Open air gym could work for no specialization founders (assuming it can satisfy a social interest if there's only one person visiting, haven't tested this)
