Short summary of your issue Ironman Game Progress Not Saving

Game Version 1.0.2

What OS are you playing on?
Windows

What platform are you using?
Windows Store

Do you have mods enabled? No

Have you tried verifying your game files (Steam only)?
(DID NOT ANSWER QUESTION)

How much "pain" is this causing you?
9

Please explain the issue you experienced in the most condensed way possible
At a certain point, I saved and quit to desktop (A). I resumed playing some time later, and when I had finished, did the same (B). When returning once more, I found that all the progress since (A) had not been saved. I then proceeded to play again, and saved and quit to the main menu (C), but found that all the progress in that time had also been lost, and was reverted back to (A).

Please explain how to reproduce the issue
Unknown

Is there anything else you think could help us identify/replicate the issue?
My auto save option is a grey shield with a question mark with the 1066 start date (my game hasn't even reached 1066 yet).

More detailed information based on Davidinho's and Morton04's research:

If you have a Cloud save file that is constantly rolling back, here are some steps you can follow for a temporary workaround that changes the file to Local save:
  1. Locate last_save.ck3 in C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings III
  2. Copy last_save.ck3 into a backup folder somewhere, such as on your desktop.
  3. Copy last_save.ck3 from your backup folder into C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings III\save games
  4. Play using Load and choose last_save (Do not use Resume)
  5. Exit the game, and repeat steps 1 through 3.
  6. Back to step 4 when you're ready to play again.
Additional Information:
  • If you want, you can rename last_save.ck3 to Something_More_Appropriate.ck3, but if you do, you'll have to rename the new last_save.ck3 every time you exit.
  • Keep in mind that if you forget to follow the steps above and resume, you will roll back again, and an autosave will overwrite your progress. If this happens, use the backup created in step 2 so recover your file, though you will still lose your most recent progress.
A couple of notes for the devs: (cc: jakeowaty)
  • My autosave files (autosave.ck3, autosave_1.ck3, autosave_2.ck3 and autosave_exit.ck3) have not updated since I played the tutorial on 9/1. I am assuming Ironman mode disables these, so this may be working as intended.
  • The new game I started with Ironman on and Cloud saving off is correctly updating its save file on exit.
  • My original game I started with Ironman and Cloud saving on will not update its save file under any circumstance. This includes both the original file (still Cloud enabled) AND the new file created from last_save.ck3 (which is no longer a Cloud file). Neither file creates autosaves.
  • Unfortunately, this workaround does give players a means of circumventing the rules of Ironman, since players can create and rename as many copies of last_save.ck3 as they want, and Ironman will remain enabled.

This helped me solve this issue. Thank you Morton04 and kythlyn passing this info.

Happened to me, is the most frustrating thing ever, so much lost progress, and dumbass me assumed it would be a one time bug, so, uh, I lost a fuckton of progress twice. Guess now I know not to play until its fixed, cause I just know I will forget to use that workaround once and lose loads of progress again...

Yeah same problem here. I played a Ironman game using cloud save on Windows game pass. I started as William the conqueror and played through the year 1200 AD fine. After that I can play but it doesn’t save progress - it appears to auto save and save on exit as normal as I keep playing to 1205 or 1210 but when I go in the game it is always back to 1200.

then I started a new Ironman cloud game as the same character (same file name I guess) and it played fine through the year 1200 as well. But then it was the same thing - whenever I leave the game and come back it is the year 1200 again - but with the new save instead of the old save

i guess I’ll try local saves next.

I also have this issue on game pass version. Luckily the last_save workaround works. But yeah this should be fixed asap. Losing save progress in game like this just isnt fun.

Exactly the same issue on Game Pass. Incredibly disappointing, lost about twenty years of gameplay. The fix outlined above did not work for me.

Losing game progress in a game like this is pretty much unacceptable. I was thoroughly enjoying it up until today.

I‘m having the same issue with Game Pass.
also this might be a long shot but I thought my 50 years of progress in last_save had been lost but it turns out OneDrive was backing up my whole Documents folder, including each version of that file, so I was able to restore the exact one I thought I lost. Lucky! Worth checking if you have Dropbox etc doing anything similar

So. I was playing an iron man. game starting out as Alfred in Wessex. I exited the game directly to the desktop after finishing my first session in about 875. The next day when I entered the main menu of the game at first it seemed as if the game had not saved at all instead, giving me only the option to continue an older non-ironman game with Byzantium. After sifting through a few menus the saves appeared and I was able to continue playing. The next time however every save except from the original one in 867 had disappeared. I have tried verifying the files and checked the save game files in an attempt to retrieve them but no luck. This is extremely frustrating.
Please, fix this guys.

i would try starting the save with cloud option turned off, that is what seems to work for most people, after losing 50 years of my first game i lost willing to play, now i really want to play again but i am afraid of being screwed again by this bug and end up giving up on the game for months.

How do I turn off the cloud option again?

Thanks for the heads up, checked my Onedrive and sadly it wasn't backed up. :( The saga of the Von Venis branch of the Karling Dynasty ends here I guess.

Hey I'm not sure if this has been mentioned but after experiencing this issue with an Ironman cloud-save game, I started a run on local save and after awhile even on local saves it no longer saves past a certain point. (PC Game Pass)

i wonder if its mainly a Gamepass issue? in steam people are not very loud about this, but for me is a dealbreaker for now,

I did this and it actually brought back my latest save

This only worked for me for one save. I progressed past the date I was stuck at (May 1013), saved and exited after playing a bit, but I am now unable to progress past a later point in the game (June 1013) instead. Now going through these steps doesn't work at all.
