Hi I really need some help with my CK/EU2 problem.

I have been playing EU2 a long time, But for some months ago, I bought a shiny new computer. Ang I began experinancing a some rather weird problems when trying to play MP. I started a thread back then, but got no reply. you can find it here

But now I bought CK, and the problem is the same, I lag so much its unplayable.

Reposting specs from last thread:
Pentium 4 prescott 3 ghz, set up to hyper threading, Dual channel 2GB Ram (DDR3200), 10000rpm HardDisk drives, SB audigy sound card, ATI radeon 9800pro gfx, Intel 1 Gbit network adapter.

My old comp was a Pentium 4 2,6 ghz, 1 GB Ram ( DDR2700 ), 10000rpm HG HD drives. SB audigy sound card, Nvidia GEforce 4400, Broadcom 1 Gbit network adapter.
---

Now as mentioned in the old post I also have a laptop, 1,5 ghz centrino. Also here EU2/CK works fine. It takes 2 sec to join vnet, and mp games run smooth. Just like my old pc I never had any problems with it. I even had no problems hosting or joining in MP. Usally hosted 14 players stable on normal speed.

Now the problem on the new machine is when I join V-net on the new machine it takes around 30 sec to discover the channels, and 30 sec more to join a channel. If I then join a MP game, I take ages to download the scenario or save game, say 10 min.

Now the weird thing is its only eu2/ck that is affected, my upload and download work as they should, I have 2mbit broadband connection. Both my ISP and myself have tested it in every way, there is no lag, no packet loss and it runs even better than the specifications. I don't have router.

Also I don't have a firewall or antivirus installed in any of my tests, its clean installations of windows. I tested both with and without DX9, also used newest drivers avalible, and switched around the GFX adapter to test that.

First I thought its the network card, so I bought another and replaced it, but same problem. then I borrowed another network adapter, same problem... :(

So I borrowed a completely different pc at work and installed that, to my surprise that was also lagging on v-net.

I really need help I don't know what to do, its only with Paradox games I have this problem. :(

Okay I will try to help you here for a while before I throw you to the wolves in the MP forum wher ethis type of suport is suposed to happen.

Okay so the first thing we know is that it is caused by the operating system, so let's look a little closer at that.

Do you play any other internet games?
Is your Hispeed throught the phone line, cable or sattalite?

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

Do you play any other internet games?
Is your Hispeed throught the phone line, cable or sattalite?

Yes I play other games, among them is Counter-Strike, DoD, Unreal, Medal of Honor, CoD. I have no problems there :)

I am connected using a 2048/512 Broadband connection via the phone line.

Uhm how do I install directplay 7? All I do is install windows XP with SP1, then update it with hotfixes, and install directx 9.

Devil, on Tuesday you lagged real bad. I as the host got lag warnings from you even when the game was paused. What why I find curious is how somebody can lag when then game is paused. There is not much going on then (the AI is non-active, so only player-actions cause traffic).

Some random stupid questions, please don't get angry at me for asking them :)

On Wednesday I didn't get a single lag warning from you. Also, you downloaded the save real fast. Where you using a different computer than on Tuesday?

How many computers do share your connection? IWhere any of them sharing the connection on Tuesday?

You seem to always have ICQ running on the background when you play, do you have other programs running at the back (like MSN, virus-protection etc)?

Did you listen to music on Tuesday (ie did you have both the game sounds on and also some other music from a cd)?

Yeah that was really weird, tuesday I shutdown everything.

No same computer, but I did lag. But here is the tricky part, on wednesday I had 2 pc'es running eu2 ( me and my mate's laptop playing in the wed game), and I had the real computer playing ck with you guys. There was zero lag on the laptops.

Tuesday there was only 1 machine on the net the real computer I played on.

Well I did have them running wedensday, but not tuesday. Though I never had a problem with them before. AV was disabled.

No I don't do that as I have a stereo right next to my pc.

EDIT: and no questions are stupid all my fire away, I will do my best to answer it. :)

Yes, in CK everybody sees the lag-reports, except the one who is lagging of course :) IMO an improvement from EU2, now all players sees if there is something odd going on.

Never mind I was wrong on second look I found what I thought was missing from your report.

I will PM KB to take a look, he is my network/MP guy.

the cards you have in your computer, are they positioned in the same slot as your old computer?

The GFX adapter is in the AGP slot, and the Sound card is in the thrid PCI slot iirc. Everything else is onboard. The motherboard is a Asus P4C800-E Deluxe.

everything else is onboard?

I thought you said you switched lan adapter??

anyways, I have two suggestion at the moment.

either try freeing up some irq's by disabling stuff you don't use in the bios. (printer port, one or two com ports, firewire etc.)
or
try moving you sound card to a different pci port.

if neither makes any difference let me know and I will try to find something else we can try.

The motherboard, has the Intel gigabit network adapter onboard. But I disabled the onboard adapter, and installed a new network adapter in a PCI slot. I was still lacking very bad.

1 month ago I tried installing both pc's with windows 2003 server, then tested it with eu2 and to my amazement it worked. But then some days after it stopped working again, I didn't touch anything or install anything in between.

PS. Sorry for my late answer but I am on vacation now, but I will be home tomorrow, I will try moving the adapter then and disabling functions to free up IRQ slots.
