Would doing a really good French or Italian description be adequate compensation/redemption? :)

This event automatically fires at the beginning of the game:

Code:
event = {
id = 62100
random = no
style = 0
name = "January 1914"
desc = "..."

date = { day = 0 month = january year = 1914 }
offset = 1
deathdate = { day = 1 month = january year = 1914 }

action_a = {
name = "OK"
command = { }
}
}

Essentially, it's an introduction of the global situation in 1914 - it's not James Joll or A.J.P. Taylor, but it's a start ;)

"1914 arrives amidst great productivity and prosperity: industrial output is growing, populations growing, emigration increasing, private enterprise booming and profound technological change ensures greater efficiency. But amidst the new integrated international economy, a backdrop of nationalism and militarism existed in a Europe that has stumbled from one diplomatic crisis to another crisis. The ancient Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary sought to hold its multiethnic empire together at all costs in the face of potent separatist nationalist forces. Her ally, Germany sought a ‘place in the sun’, chafed as it was in its European surroundings and fearful of encirclement by her potential enemies. France, recovered after her defeat to Prussia in 1870 still seeks ‘revanche’ and the recovery of her lost provinces: Alsace and Lorraine. Russia, reeling from defeat against the Japanese in 1905 and rife with domestic turmoil, seeks external glory to distract its revolutionary people, and the Ottoman Empire – ‘The sick man of Europe’, desperately modernises to avoid collapse. Britain, with the largest and richest empire in history looks at growing German power with nervousness. In the extra-European world, the United States prospers and appears untroubled by matters in Europe, and Japan eyes up new lands – and new opportunities, in Asia. War was narrowly averted in 1905 over Morocco, in 1908 over Bosnia-Herzegovina, 1911 over Morocco again and 1912-13 over the Balkan Wars. Europe is a powder keg. Soldiers and statesmen await the spark."

Any suggestions? Should it be longer? Or is it totally crap and should be scrapped/rewritten?

Not bad. This part seems a little awkward.

and Japan eyes up new lands – and new opportunities, in Asia. War was narrowly averted in 1905 over Morocco, in 1908 over Bosnia-Herzegovina, 1911 over Morocco again and 1912-13 over the Balkan Wars. Europe is a powder keg. Soldiers and statesmen await the spark.

Try this instead.

and Japan eyes new lands – and new opportunities, in Asia. Europe nearly erupted into war in 1905 and 1911 over Morocco, and in 1908 and 1912 over the Balkans. While these crises were resolved, Europe remains a powder keg. The spark to ignite it is awaited by civilians, soldiers, and statesmen alike.

Maybe he wanted the "movie trailer" feel? ;)

One Ring. Two Towers. One Dark Lord. Frienship. Courage. This Christmas etc

In a world where time has no meaning... In a land when justice is outlawed and freedom is forbidden... In an outpost on the edge of space... One man... One woman... A struggle rages on...

Either I just made it up... or it's from the preview to to the movie Comedian, with Jerry Seinfeld.

Probably the latter. ;)

Here's the revised version - any new suggestions? :)

Just curious, are the descriptions for White Siberia and those governments of Whites necessary?

If yes, i could write some.

If you wouldn't mind writing them, they would be useful in the event a player wanted to reload as one of those governments.

As for the general description, I like it now.

A country description for Italy:

ITA_DESC;At the start of the 19th century Italy was a mere 'geographical expression.' However, thanks to the efforts of the Piedmontese statesman Cavour and the nationalist leaders Mazzini and Garibaldi, all that changed during the Risorgimento of 1859-70. With French help, Piedmont-Sardinia fought two wars against Austria to recapture provinces held by the Hapsburgs, while popular uprisings broke out in the other Italian principalities. In 1861, the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed, and in 1870 Italian troops occupied Rome and declared it the capital of a united country. However, several Italian-speaking provinces remained in Austrian hands, and this territory - 'Italia irredenta' - was regarded by many Italian patriots as unfinished business. For the moment, though, such nationalist aspirations were put on hold as Italy aligned herself with Bismarck's Germany in the Triple Alliance. Instead, Italian ambition was turned towards establishing a colonial empire. Some settlements were established in the horn of Africa, but Italy's humiliating defeat at Adowa in 1896 against Abyssinian tribesmen left her the laughing-stock of Europe. Burning for revenge, Italy next turned on the weakened Ottoman Empire, seizing the province of Libya and several Mediterranean islands from the Turks in 1911-12. On the domestic front, Italy is a divided country. The north is a modern industrial society, but plagued by the activities of revolutionary socialists. The south seems to belong to an earlier age, with primitive peasant agriculture, blood feuds and secret societies. Many solutions are offered for the turmoil: liberal reform, a Marxist reorganisation of society, or the adoption of an aggressive nationalist policy to direct peoples' attention outwards. As war clouds gather over Europe, though, the question is who will Italy support? Should she stand by the old alliance with Germany, or join the Entente powers to reclaim the lost Italian lands from Austria? Or perhaps Italy should steer her own independent course in the world?;;;;;;;;;;X,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

And for France:

FRA_DESC;Once the greatest Power of Europe, France is now a troubled country. Economically, she has been overtaken by many of her rivals. A declining birthrate seems to promise further decline, and in an age of mass armies might prove a fatal weakness. Politically, the Third Republic is unstable; a coup attempt in 1877 was narrowly averted, and the conservative-nationalist Boulangist movement of the 1880s also came close to seizing the state. The Dreyfus affair of 1894-1906 further laid bare the divisions within society, as monarchists, clericalists, anti-semites and conservative supporters of Army and State lined up against radicals, liberals, socialists, secularists and supporters of the Republic. On the international scene, the defeat by Prussia in 1871 and Germany's occupation of the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine is a festering sore, and demands for 'revanche' - revenge - against Germany remain strong. All is not hopeless, however. Paris, 'the City of Light'', remains the fashionable, cultural and artistic capital of the world. French troops have redeemed their defeat in 1871 by establishing the world's second-largest colonial empire, and are now respected as one of the strongest, most aggressive and capable armies in Europe. Most importantly, France now has strong allies. Thanks to German diplomatic blunders and offers of French financial support, Russia was lured away from Germany's side and in 1894 signed a binding military agreement with France. Even more significant - and surprising - was the formation of the 'Entente Cordiale' in 1904 with Britain. For centuries France's traditional enemy, Britain was drawn to her side through fear of increasing German power. Although the exact terms of their commitment to France remain unclear, British friendship gives the French confidence that whatever the future might bring, they will weather the storm and emerge triumphant.;;;;;;;;;;X

And could you tell me what you have chosen to be the states i mean there were a good deal of different governments whose jurisdiction overlapsed one and the same territory and etc.

So, the first is Autonomous Siberia

mrasib.gif

but what else?

There are three main factions - RUS, SOV and SIB - with national claims to the whole of Russia, plus various minor factions.

SOV is, obviously, the Bolsheviks. Capital Moscow. This faction also includes the Tashkent area, Tannu Tuva, and the Maritime Province.

RUS is mainly the faction headed by, successively, Kornilov, Denikin and Wrangel, based in the south. Capital Maikop. It also includes the areas of Central Asia outside Soviet control, and the Murmansk-Karelia region under General Miller. It would also include Yudenich's North-Western Front if we could work out how to make that possible!

SIB is an amalgamation of all the factions in the Volga basin and points East. Effectively, it represents the Directory of the All-Russian Government that attempted to unite the autonomous Siberian government at Omsk, the Komuch at Samara, the Urals Government at Ekaterinburg, etc. The Czech Legion are also represented as SIB units, and Kolchak will become their head of state in a coup. I've given SIB the red-white-blue horizontal Russian tricolour as their symbol, not the green and white Siberian flag, because the faction represents the purported All-Russian Government.

Non-Russian factions are ARM (Armenia), AZB (Azerbaijan), GEO (Georgia), UKR (Ukraine), U17 (Makhnovshchina), BLR (Belarus), LIT (Lithuania), LAT (Latvia), EST (Estonia), FIN (Finland) and POL (Poland).

PROTEST!:D Maritime region was occupied by united forces of Japanese Army and the so-called Armed Forces of the Eastern Outskirts of the Russian Empire, in 1919 it was reformed into the Far East Army later into Priamurskaya Zemskaya Ratj - so virtually till mid 1921 there were no huge or at least significant armed formations of the Reds in the Far East.

PROTEST 2:D
At first Siberian government by the way which adopted white-green flag which Kolchak didn't dare to abolish was placed at Tomsk till late 1918, after Kolchak's coup it was disbanded and formed again now in Omsk with the different personalities (by the way, if needed i can provide the lists of all governments) the thing is that now i'm checking Omsk site devoted to Siberian republic and Civil War in Siberia and it says that white-green was the national symbol and actually white-green flag flutered higher than tricolor.

http://www.translate.ru/url/tran_ur...&transliterate=on&psubmit2.x=47&psubmit2.y=10 approx. translation

But in the long run it's your choice, i would propose Siberia keeps its two-color flag and Armed Forces of the South of Russia keep tricolor, that would be more historically correct.

The Maritime region was only occupied by Japan after the Revolution began, though, wasn't it? So in game terms, I'd think it should be controlled at first by the Soviets, and Japan (being at war with them) will then have the opportunity to occupy the region.

Bear in mind that it's highly unlikely that there will be any Soviet troops in this area (unless a player deliberately stations them there) so the area will fall to Japan or the SIB faction quickly.

As for SIB, according to what I've read the SRs of the Provisional Government fled to Samara after the October Revolution and set up what they claimed was the legitimate Russian government there. Meanwhile, Siberia claimed autonomy, and on 4 July 1918 declared independence "until a legitimate all-Russian government was formed". According to my books, this government was based at Omsk, not Tomsk!

The Western Allies tried to get Samara and Omsk to cooperate, and finally (after conferences at Chelyabinsk and Ufa) it was agreed to create a federal government where the Volga, Urals and Siberia would each be member-states. This government was the Directory, based at Omsk. However, none of the member-states were particularly cooperative, since they all thought that they, not the others, should have been given supreme power! I'd argue that this explains the flags; the Siberian regional government flew both its own flag and the Russian flag, but being stubborn and independent put the local flag higher.

In game terms, the RUS faction (AFSR) will have to keep the same flag that RUS has at the start of the game, which I believe is going to be the tricolour with a tsarist eagle canton. It seems logical to me, therefore, that the other pan-Russian faction uses the plain tricolour.

So do you plan to do that through events? I don't see how Japan will do it knowingly and moreover how are Whites supposed to grab it.

You wouldn't believe me, I now stay in Tomsk and work in the state archives of the Civil War and Ãîñóäàðñòâåííûé àðõèâ Òîìñêîé îáëàñòè (ÃÀÒÎ) the State archive of Tomskaya Oblast', studying this very moment, and you wouldn't believe me that at first the Derber government was in Tomsk since 27 Jan. 1918 the day of formation:)

Then you just mix two terms the Ufa Directory, the real Directory, and such term as "Siberian Directory" - there is such a term in the historical documents but it refers to Siberian Provisional Government metaphorically as it was composed of mostly SRs like the Ufa Directory and actually they relied heavily on army general (in case of Ufa Directory that was gen. Boldyrev) in case of Siberia this was Grishin-Almazov who conspired and implemented the whole revolt in Siberia. Then at first Grishin-Almazov faced a strict opposition in major-general Ivanov-Rinov who participated in conspiracy but he with his fellows-generals decided to take power themselves and therefore there were 2 centers: Omsk - Ivanov-Rinov and Tomsk-Grishin-Almazov. The whole thing was solved pretty quickly because Grishin-Almazov managed to form a relatively efficient Siberian army group composed of ensigns of Tomsk Infantry Military School - and Ivanov-Rinov sucked off:D

Then Grishin-Almazov moved government to Omsk because he found Tomsk (which stands in the dead-end of Trans-Siberian Railway) to be not effectively placed for the capital.

Another explanation of Siberian flag is that it was taken from the coat of arms of the city of Tomsk;)
