I have the same problem as the previous posters, and yes i have Vista too.

yes. it seems to be a vista problem only as far as I can see. the crash is inside the nvidia drivers.
here is something you can test for me: switch the game to windowed mode (set fullscreen to no in settings.txt) and let me know if it still happens. It doesn't for me on the vista machine.

No CDT in Windowed mode
After having Rome crash every other time I tried to pick a date, I tried the workaround above and can second, that in windowed mode usind Vista with a Gforce8600GT and Directx10 it seems to work.
So, thanks a lot for the tip and please fix this for fullscreen mode in the next patch.

Just a matter of interest this bug is not consistent sometimes i can start any of the historical games other times clicking the same button will cause the game to CTD.
windowed mode is the solution so far
same here: vista home 32 and geforce 8600mgs! windowed is the solution! would be good if fixed.

had this sraxsh on XP home - when selecting a nation or date. Apart from other crashes :/......
See also my dxdiag.txt, which is posted in the thread titled "Bookmark crash," for another instance of the same problem. I can consistently reproduce the problem. That thread also describes the impact that the recommended troubleshooting steps had and, in particular, their ineffectiveness with respect to solving the problem.
Ahhh, thought this was just me... Yep, Vista Ultimate for me. I am lucky. I have like three choices when it comes to switching the date and then it crashes. I have encountered a few minor crashes, but nothing too significant as the date selection.
I am also having this date-select crash problem using Vista Ultimate and an Nvidia card. However, when I change the settings to force windowed mode, it doesn't load up in a window and I still get the crash. Suggestions?

Loaded in windowed mode and it did not crash.
However in addition to date select crashing (in full screen of course) I'm also getting a similar crash *occassionally* when loading saved games and sometimes even using the date arrows. These two much less than the preset date select crashing though.
