First time I tried to load the Pompei version (1.1) through steam it crashed with almost immediate message "Paradox crash reporter cannot locate crash file". This consistently repeats every time I try to load the game through steam. Help

i can't load a saved game. i can start a new game, but can't load an old one. it takes forever and then it crashes.
i deleted the game and reinstalled it, but that didn't help either.

I can help with the first problem. In the notes about the update it says that save games from prior versions are not compatible with Pompei. I just want to get past the steam opening into the game but it crashes to desktop before the intro pictures even pop up.

First run a Steam Verify operation, see if that finds anything to fix.

If that doesn't help:
DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/Imperator/pdx_settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/Imperator/logs/ folder, attach system.log .

Steam verify found no problems nor did the DXDIAG which I hope I can upload

Thank you for your efforts so far. Note I also had problem with 1.0.3 Varus in that after awhile the save game would not work (only 1 KB would save after about 50 game years of play and the continue game at the start up menu went away (it was present with prior versions) see earlier message thread from me in either tech or bug support

Please update that nVidia driver:
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

And add imperator.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.

If they don't help:
Please attach your Documents/Paradox/Imperator/pdx_settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/Imperator/logs/ folder, attach system.log , and any other files in that folder over 0 bytes.

Still get the crash with same error message -- Not much in the file folder

Are there no files in Documents/paradox/IR/logs/ over 0 bytes?

What antivirus app do you use?

Are there no files in Documents/paradox/IR/logs/ over 0 bytes?

What antivirus app do you use?

Try again.

My antivirus programs are Windows Defender and Malwarebytes. As you noted in an earlier post Windows defender has been tricky with Paradox games in the past. I had big problems with it and Hearts of Iron 3 with world War II immersion and DDH mods about 3 months ago after playing this game steadily for about the last 3 years. Eventually I let enough paradox .exe programs through to fix it. (Along those lines there seem to be a bunch of steam/paradox .exe programs related to crash reports that I found when scanning file names and I wonder if this is part of the problem. Imperator worked fine with the initial version and at least 1.0.1 (not sure about 1.0.2) and then with 1.0.3 the continue game function and the save games were all messed up (see an earlier tech or bug report from me).

Today I found 10 files of over 1KB in documents/paradox/IR/logs -- I probably looked in the wrong place. They are now attached.

You are getting a LOT of errors in that log that i do not see in a vanilla install. Let's make sure we have a good clean installation:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-Imperator
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Imperator AND Documents/Paradox/Imperator folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add imperator.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular you need to make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam Stellaris or Documents Imperator locations, before installing again.

I did all this and only succeeded in getting the game to crash even earlier in the start up. The can not find the crash reporter error message has gone away but when I start the game either through short cut desktop icon or by first going into steam I get only the launcher to come up and when I click on play I get only a brief spinning blue "wheel" for a couple of seconds and then nothing at all. It seems like an anti-virus program problem but I have gone into windows defender and added all the steam and imperator exe files that I can find. I have also done this with malwarebytes as well. The only interesting thing is that in wndows defender I seem to have two imperator rome files rather than the prior 1 only.

Not sure what you mean here , can you clarify?

Does your error.log still have all those errors?

Thank you for sticking with me even if my communication skills are not so great.

After an uninstall via steam I did a reinstall from steam. Unfortunately the game still does not work. However instead of seemingly starting to load from either my steam account or the desktop launcher what I get is the launcher screen and when I push play the launcher screen goes away, I get the small windows "wheel" for a second or two and then nothing (possibly indicating something is blocking the game start?? and then a clean normal desktop). In the past once you pushed the play button it would go to an error message about crashreporter file not found and then back to desktop. The current non start or loading of the game reminds me of a problem I had with HOI 3 after a new windows defender update came out that I eventually fixed by using the exclude apps part of windows defender but I am not sure about whether I am right or not. I have gone into windows defender and added all of the steam or IR exe files I can find to the exclusions without any effect.

I have gone back and re examined the Documents/paradox/IR/log -- After the uninstall/reinstall there is no IR file under documents/paradox/ -- the only thing there is documents/paradox/HOI3/log

Please place the attached file in the Steam IR "games" folder. It should make the game write the settings.txt file and /logs/ folder to there, instead of under Documents.

If that works, there is still an AV app problem here.

Placed file in Program filesx86/Steam/steamapps/imperatorrome as well as programfilesx86/steam/games and there were no changes --- i.e. no start up of the game from launcher. I also added every steam or imperator exe program to the windows defender lists as well -- again no game start.

Another question -- Was there supposed to be an IR folder un Programfiles x86/Steam/steam/games because there wasn't just an IR icon which looks like a windows paint folder.

No, I meant in Program filesx86/Steam/steamapps/imperatorrome/game/ folder.

OK I think I got this right now as far as the file change -- It went into Programfilesx86/steam/steamapps/common/imperatorrome and I got an overwrite message. Unfortunately there was no change in the failure to start up either through steam or the desktop icon on my computer.

"It" here being settings.txt and the /logs/ folder?

There's an early beta of 1.2 now available in the Steam Betas tab for this game - I assume that does not start either?

1. Yes the "it" I refer to is the txt file that is attached to your post #14 above in this thread.
2. In a minor triumph (I not quite totally computer illitererate) I was able to find the 1.2 Cicero beta on steam, select it and found when the launcher came up that it was the 1.2 version. Unfortunately it failed to launch like all the other versions of it after the "play" button was pushed both through steam and the my desktop.

You put userdir.txt in Programfilesx86/steam/steamapps/common/imperatorrome and got an overwrite message? So it was there already? That could only be if you put it there previously, but in any case it will have no effect there. It MUST go into Program filesx86/Steam/steamapps/imperatorrome/game/ .
