It'll be 3D. No question. The 3D format is far easier to develop and mod, not to mention making a 2D game would mean either reverting to an inferior engine or making another new one.

I'm really hoping for a CKII because the dynasty controls are an item that is really missing in the normal paradox game. I know it maybe a low seller, but I really hope for it, if nothing other than a direct download item.

Has Johan commented on this, that maybe positive?

There's an interview where he claims CK as his favorite game. That bodes well.

The Middle Ages is a popular period, so Paradox will inevitably revisit it at some point, but the game might not be a CK2 and it might not cover 1066-1453.

You first statement is the only reason I think a CK2 (or something like it) would be at all likely.

One silly, perhaps nit-picky thing I'm hoping for from a sequel (if one ever comes) is a game that either models non-feudal societies better or simply doesn't allow them to be played. My main objection here is the Roman Empire, which did not run itself on the Emperor/Prince/Count lines that it has in CK/DV. The "elective law" does help model how succession was never formal in Byzantium, but it does not render that correctly; for example, there are no ways to appoint the Caesars that often indicated favor in succession from the reigning Basileus.

My opinion is that, being that the Middle Ages will never go out of style, we can almost certainly expect to see a Crusader Kings II in the future. Just how far that future is and what form it will take is going to be the main points of contention.

I saw this with confidence for several reasons. Firstly, there is the aforementioned popularity of the period that will never die out. There is an almost universal appeal in the strategy gaming market to games set in this period of high politics, bitter wars, and overall feel. We can expect medieval themed games to be on the computers the passengers our spaceships are carrying toward Alpha Centauri.

Second, even though CK has been shown to be a weak seller, an expanded market presence created by the great success both Rome and EU3 have enjoyed would ensure improved viability for CK 2's success. Building off the fan base generated by these two recent games, Paradox can be assured of a strong built in audience and tons of preorders.

Thirdly, so long as Johan continues his efforts to keep CK alive, as evidenced by his patch efforts, Paradox will have a powerful advocate in seeking a sequel. We can only pray that our favorite Swede is as commited to CK and the medieval theme.

When CK II comes out (I'm putting 4 to 1 odds it will be out by 2011, which is a long time I know), it will use an updated 3D engine with a world similar in scope to Rome, but with an expanded Middle East, Scandinavia, and Russia. Feudal governments will still be the norm, but we can expect bishoprics and republics since they are playable in EU3. The character system we know and love will be back, altered, and perfected in a different direction than that of Rome, which I and others I've talked to consider a significant step back. Events will play a defining role again, with oodles of different effects on your characters and realms. Combat will again be adapted from EU3/Rome, refined and brought into perfection.

Thats my piece, thanks for reading.

DV? Version 2?

One of the sticky posts above reads:

DV: 2.1 Beta Patch : NEW BETA PATCH released on 13 June 2008

What is DV? And if this is not a Crusader Kings upgrade, then why is it being posted in this forum?

Highly recommended, as DV fixes a lot of problems and adds tons of new stuff (also DVIP is a wonderful mod to use with it!)

Personally I would love to see a CK II >.> Be it 3d or 2d, I do not care as long as they stick to the core dynastic gameplay!

I sincerely hope Paradox will seriously consider a CK sequel. All the Paradox games are great, but CK is easily the most original. With it's focus on dynasties as opposed to nations, there's really nothing else quite like it - and never has been. I play the other games, but I keep coming back to CK because it's truly a one-of-a-kind game.

I totally agree. It's also the game which has lots of potential to IMPROVE it.

I also think that the medieval era is very popular, so it can be a commercial success, when properly done:
- let the players DO more, like founding knight orders, employ decent teachers for your children, fighting feuds at court and so on
- gives more emphasis on crusades (and counter-crusades), people will like it
- make more different rules for duchies, republics, bishoprics and order countries ...
- differences for playable (!) religious factions like pagans, muslims, jewish
- make the church a more important player
- new emperor system
- more trade, more traits, more improvements, more province effects
- better society system (burghers, peasants, cleric, nobles ) ...

There is so much to do! CK II will ROCK!

I don't see it happening at all, well at least in a form that is true to the current version.

If it happens, it's going to be those "gorgeous" 3D battles where you can field 10001 armies facing off in super details, colour of their bow strings, etc. The management of the realm, personalities would be nothing more than an afterthought.

For some reasons, you think it sounds great, medival total war XVI is the game you want.
