"Ti's not the biggest kingdom at a moment that is successful, it is the most sta
ble kingdom that is successful. Look upon the the Roman Empire. It is the legion
s that created the empire but it was the roads that held it together. "

Rule Nr.1:
What good is it having a large kingdom an then losing it in a bad boy or success
ors war.
In the long run what counts is having a stable kingdom long enough for different
cultures to start merging and generating stability.
The factors of stability are number of king's counties, king's reputation, prestig
e and piety.
In an event of civil war having control of most duchy titles is the most importa
nt. Non direct successor sons could be given one whole duchy with counties only
if the king (his successor) has the same number of counties/duchies as other duk
es combined. A good rule is to never create a duke of more than one duchy.
If a duke somehow get more than one duchy, first try to marry someone to his suc
cessor. If that doesn't work wait for an opportunity to strike him down.
Stability is everything. Create absolutism by having absolute power of duchy tit
les.

Rule Nr.2:
Give titles to sons only when you have married them or else they will want more
and more and rebel in the end. It is wicked that they are disobedient but there
is no profit in striking down you own dynasty. Give them titles slowly, so they
wouldn't rebel once they have it all. Give them more titles if they have more so
ns. Never give other sons more than the successor son.

Various Rules:

Powerful duchies are good only if you can control them.

Expand family influence by striking down disloyal dukes. Avoid striking down fam
ily - better bribe them.

Try to achieve a balance of power inside the kingdom.

Invest in +1 gold improvements first and later in +5% improvement.

Avoid bad boy and low reputation by only attacking foreign kings. Spread family
influence by striking down disloyal vassals and not by attacking foreign vassals
piecemeal. Taking on the kingdom of Hungary takes too long by going for each va
ssal piece meal.

Create powerful dukes that are loyal.
Invest in your capital buildings that are good for education.

If dukes start wars support them and then later take their provinces if they bec
ome disobedient.

If you are strong ti's better to have compact duchies and one duke with all coun
ties in a duchy. He can support a bigger army than one count. But be careful les
t the duke becomes too powerful.

Stjepan gets married.

First order of the day is to marry Stjepan. Stjepan was sent to a monastery to get rid of him so he couldn't make claims on the throne. But now he is needed.

King Kresimir has an old wife and no male successors, that was bad. He had to find himself a new wife. But in the meantime he'll just marry his brother Stjepan. Stjepan was raised to be a priest so he's a bachelor. When he marries he will setlle down.

King Kresimir: Come along Stjepan come out of the monastery, the brothers will be waiting for you.
Stjepan Trpimirovic: Uhh, ok. What is it ?
King Kresimir: Stjepan, I have good news for you?
Stjepan Trpimirovic: What is it this time Kreso? More worldly concerns, you know I consider myself dead to this world.
King Kresimir: Yes I know, the abot father speaks highly of your modesty.
Stjepan Trpimirovic: False compliments will get you nowhere Kreso. What do you want?
King Kresimir: Stjepan , YOU are getting married!
Stjepan Trpimirovic: WHAT ?
King Kresimir: You heard me, now please accept this. Our family has no male heirs...
Stjepan Trpimirovic: But no way...
King Kresimir: ... You must be obedient to your liege !
Stjepan Trpimirovic: I am obedient to God alone.
King Kresimir: Ok , but consider what will happen if you don't marry.
Stjepan Trpimirovic: What ?
King Kresimir: Heathens may come to the throne or even worse, a civil war may errupt. And consider what pieous deeds you can do if you marry. As a wedding present I'll give you a bishophric. You may do with it as you wish.

Stjepan Trpimirovic: ... after some deliberation
You are kidding? No you aren't. Fine I might do as you wish.

In the end Stjepan gets married. He spent all his life in a monastery so we can't blame it on him that he doesn't feel like taking an active part in the kingdom's power politics. Nevertheless he accepts.

Update 1069

The kingdom is prosperous, but Stjepan the heir to the throne dies under mysterious circumstances. His bishophric is taken over by some other non family relative.
His death causes a crisis. There is no heir to the kingdom under the current inheritance law.
After her tried affair the wife is now depressed.

Very bad, King Kresimir's only daughter dies. Now he has no living relatives at all. His wife is 40+ . Looks like we are looking at the end of the Trpimirovic dinasty.

The inheritance law is changed to elective. Now Dmitar Zvonimir the Duke of Slavonia is first in line to inherit.

After King Kresimirs death in battle (Siege of Krain) Duk e Dmitar Zvonimir inherites the throne of Croatia. In his person he united the long seperated Slavonia with Dalmatia and becomes the most powerful soverign in the region.

War with Germany

King Dmitar Zvonimir found himself in war with Germany. At first it went well, he captured Krain,Istria and Kaernten from the local nobles but then the German king launched a counteroffensive all the way to Slavonia. Peacedeal: all of Kaernten goes to the German king. Disasterous.

In the midst of war an alliance with Poland was made, but it was already too late.
Turn the attention to east if west is too strong?

Was the duke of slavonia related to you?
You should lose the game if you have no heirs to inherit you?

Interestingly the Duke of Slavonia doesn't have any parents but as soon as I changed the inheritance law to elective Trpimirovic was added to his name.

And no the game wasn't ended. But now there is the problem that the next in line for inheritance is no longer Trpimirovic but rather some foreign count from Krain. :)

P.S. What do you think is better, to give titles (counties) to alll children and risk that some of them rebel or to give no titles so they won't rebel.

If they are close to a rebellion then I have to give them more provinces or a duke title. But in the long run that means that powerful dukes tend to pull the kingdom apart.

Is that the goal of the game. To spread you dinasty never mind the kingdom or to just have one family member in control and to marry the rest to foreign powers ?

End of Trpimirovic Dinasty

Historically the Kingdoms of Croatia and Hungary were united in a personal union by king Koloman in the year of 1102.

In the Game Dmitar Zvonimir died in 1091 leaving no male heirs. Altough he had 2 female heirs he could't change the elective law to semisalic primogeniture in time.

THE END.

I say the main goal is to get a huge dynasty. :D
And avoid inbreeding, which is very sadly inevitable. :eek:o

Try to create a lot of bastards. They can worthy counts and dukes.
