There's a mod for that. You can even set how many of each weight class you start with.
Starting with 4-5 light mechs and no mediums is a substantial difficulty boost vs. the usual Vindi, Shawk, BJ start.
You can also edit SimGameConstants.json yourself without the need of a mod. Not random, but you get to pick what you want to start with.

Starting with a random assortment of BattleMechs and pilots in Career Mode would be an excellent addition to the official game. As the modding community has already shown, you don't have to move heaven and earth to make this happen and for those who play the game on Mac or Linux, most of the mods are unsupported. I wonder to what extent HBS choses *not* to include a feature that modders have already added. I'm thinking in particular of the different color line-of-sight mod that makes such a nice quality-of-life feature without effecting the game mechanics in any way.

I would suspect as has been mentioned by them dozens of times its that they operate by order of priority when adding or tweaking anything.

Infinitly long list of requests and plans, finite time and resources to add them all.

Also they have their own ideas about what features fit where within balance that will not be the same as any individual modders who only have to follow their own wishes and whims.

And to add on to that, they need to prioritise making features that can be sold so they can stay in business. Since they also have a backlog of things cut from the release game that they do want to deliver sooner rather than later, it becomes rather clear that incorporating already existing mod features into the official game ranks rather low on the list of priorities.

After all, you can just use the mod if you want that feature now.

...but it predates Game of Thrones. Game of Thrones is like BattleTech.
Aha! I knew there was a reason I like GoT - it's BattleTech in a fantasy setting!

Wait, who is the Mother of 'Mechs in BattleTech (I'm assuming that 'Mechs == dragons here...)

The daughter of the mad king on a quest to restore her realm and take it back from those who stole it from her family? Totally a Sun Tzu Liao rip off...

Nope. Takashi Kurita is the Dragon in 3025. His mother is not known (at least to Sarna).

I just had a thought about something that could make an interesting reward at the end of the 1200 days in career mode. How about an offer to of a retainer from one faction? I would tie it to a minimum total score, a minimum number of successful contracts for the faction, and obviously a minimum positive standing. I think it might even good to be able to receive multiple offers to choose from if you met all the minimums. But I would allow only 1 choice, which would end that particular career.

Becoming essentially a House unit seems like a successful career to me.

I'm still not sold on the 1200 day thing. That is not even 4 years. I get why from a lore perspective, but just am not a fan of the short time.

I'd rather see this version of the game start 2 years earlier and give us 5 years to earn our score. Now granted, I may be going slow but on my first campaign, I was past 1200 days before even reaching the final mission. Add in travel time from jumppoint to planet and well, it just seems short.

That is just it, to gain a high score I'll need to consider and incorporate some form of multiple Lances and carry upwards of 10-12 MechWarriors on my Mercenary OUTFIT's rolls.

I'm already making plans and looking forward to keeping my Jump Cavalry Medium Lance fully employed deep, deep into those 1200-days, thanks to the new Target Acquisition Mission Type. : )

With only 1200-days, Time and Time Management will most definitely be at the Heart of my Career Mode High Score Attempts.

dont forget....those 1200 days in career mode do not include mucking about grinding and such getting ready for campaign missions.
so that frees up loads of time to do this your way....not scrounging at the arse end of the innersphere for scraps from Kamea.

You get your score at 1200 days, but there's nothing stopping you from continuing playing even after 1200 days.

I get this. Believe me, i do. I think it's a nice bonus and I will have a save that goes long beyond the 1200 days. I'm just saying that for scoring a career, especially given travel times in the Btech world, 3.29 years doesn't seem like much of a career to score.

With travel times of around 20 days each even with less than 2 missions per planet your skill looking at 100+ missions. That seems reasonable. Also a great reason to upgrade the Argos Engines early on!

Ahhh, the upcoming "Career Score List". Just place me at the bottom now please and I will sit over here in the corner, all nice and quiet, as my place on the List will negate anything I have to say or comment on, because only Potato players will have low "Career Scores" and what they will have to say about the Game will be meaningless to those who have HIGHER Career scores. ;)

Even if "they" have played BT since the OPEN BETA...

Ahhh, Score Lists... :(

Hadn't thought of that... the Mods might want to make a rule regarding Scores and Comments right now.:p:D

We'll deal with that IF it becomes necessary. Since at the moment nobody has a score, and even when we get one it's only visible to you, it would take a lot of effort to make it into an issue.

It's not Gear Score and we're not a WoW raid guild.

Edit: Besides, our main guiding star for forum interaction applies to this hypothetical situation too. Just treat others with respect and courtesy, and we'll all have a good time hanging out together.

Yes, just as I have already been posting HBS BATTLETECH Unofficial Leaderboards, I will be starting a forum thread for fellow Career Mode Enthusiasts to post BOTH their high and low scores.

BATTLETECH is a FUN game and I plan to celebrate all its soon to be even more numerous modes. : )
