You will attack Brandenberg. It is your destiny....

RGB - Set... For what? WC? No, I'm too weak for that ;). I have some goals somewhat set right now, I shall just have to see how the game goes further...

thrashing mad - no more being minor definitely is a relief.

Fingal - haven't considered such an option yet... I try to never 'break the rules' and never attack until after the expiry date of the peace treaty... But this time it definitely might be worthwile. If it weren't already past it :).

Baneslave - it's really nice to hear such kind words, you know? Great thanks! As you see it wasn't possible, I was away from 'civilisation' for these two weaks (imagine that a damn 50'000 city DOESN'T have an internet cafe!!!)...

stnylan - I see all of you say the exact same thing :). Well, I always feel uneasy attacking without a CB...

Huge thanks for reading and commenting guys. An update will probably come tomorrow in the evening, or on Tuesday. I don't have too much time because I try to learn as much as possible... But I shall try to update as frequently as possible.
Once again, thanks! :)

Well, Mikkeli has about 52000 citisens, and I haven't seen even one internet cafe here.

To the Holy Land!

The next five years were just as quiet as the post-war ones. An ironic smile was visible on Bogusław's face when he heard of Västergötland revolting back to it's rightful owners in Sweden. Much of his time now was spent on administering the realm, strengthening Pomerania's presence on nearby markets in Gdańsk, Praha and Köbenhavn, and ensuring good relations with neighbours, especially Poland and Hannover - a potential future ally.

Bogusław X wasn't a religious man. He never showed off with his faith in the one true God, unless it was required during an official occasion. Bogusław was, though, a very competent politician who understood that the beliefs of the people were a real power that could be used to the state's favour, if needed. Therefore, in order to look better in the eyes of the Pomeranians under his rule, and even more to be considered a friend of the church by the German archbishops and the Pope, Bogusław undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

On Christmas Day of the year 1510, Bogusław announced that in a month he will, together with an escort, set on a journey to the Holy Land. He intended to travel by land through Germany and Lombardia, Tuscany to Rome, where he would, after a meeting with his Holiness Julius II (to which he was recently invited - the Pope wanted to establish relations with the new rising power of the North), sail to the Genoese port in Jaffa. Bogusław left his son, Jerzy (Georg), to administrate the Duchy during his absence - this would be a very good school of politics and governing for his heir.

Bogusław sent messengers to the courts in Praha, Innsbruck, Milano and Venice, asking for their permission to travel through their lands - which he was granted without much troubles. After all, why should anyone hinder pilgrims' voyage? Thus, in the end of January, with the slow melting of snow, Bogusław set on the trip south. In each of the capital cities he travelled through, he was received by their respective monarchs, whom the Duke of Pomerania assured of his friendship and goodwill toward their countries. During the travel through Venetian-owned Tuscany, Bogusław met with a shipowner from Pisa who, after much bargaining, agreed to charter two galleys for Bogusław and his retinue and assure their safe arrival in the Holy Land.

screensave0tw3.jpg

After a few more days of travelling through the rich lands of Tuscany, Bogusław arrived in Rome. He had to wait for four days until Julius II finally received him. Bogusław brought for the Pope valuable gifts in order to both impress the Pope and gain his goodwill. For Pomerania, good relations with the Holy See were vital, as Bogusław's ambitions lay in getting crowned King - a feat worthy of the greatest of the Gryfites, which would surely destroy Pomerania's relations with many of her neighbours, but would increase the prestige of the state tremendously.

During the official audience Bogusław pledged allegiance to the Pope, assuring him of Pomeranian support and friendship. The Duke was well aware of Julius's difficult situation: being caught between the two powers, Venice and France, like between a hammer and an anvil. It enabled Bogusław, during the private conversation with the Pope, to state his offer of support in a possible conflict with the troublesome neighbours, and to persecute any possible followers of the new German heresies, of which more and more disturbing news had been reaching Rome. In exchange for this the Pope, predicting what would be demanded of him, himself offered for Bogusław and his heirs to become the Kings of Pomerania - the second state in the Holy Roman Empire with this title. The coronation would take place in Stettin, the capital of Pomerania, and would be conducted by one of the papal legates.

After a few days, Bogusław set onward toward the Levant. The travel by sea to Jaffa, and the last part of the pilgrimage - to Jerusalem itself, went on without any problems. The Sultans of the Mamelukes were quite tolerant toward pilgrims and made the travel quite easy. Bogusław and his men were lucky to arrive in the Holy Land in the colder part of the year, which made the travel comfortable. In the Holy City itself Bogusław spent a month, praying, visiting the still existent there monasteries and giving alms to the poor. Of course, he never neglected maintaining good relations with other pilgrims: Bogusław was more than happy and astonished to see in Jerusalem the Archbishop of Cologne, Philipp II. The hierarch had arrived in Jerusalem one week before Bogusław, fulfilling an oath given to his predecessor. The two lords spent most of their time together, discussing theological and political matters.

Among the latter was the pressing matter of Cologne's weakness. Phillipp II was threatened from the east by the Bohemians, and west by Burgundy. He agreed to become an ally to Pomerania, setting the stage for an eventual Pomeranian protection for the Archbishopric.

Sorry for the lack of pictures for this - during those few years that I played before I had gone to the mountains, actually almost nothing happened. Hope you like this newest update :). Of course, any comments would be much appreciated ;).

Baneslave - well, I spent the last week with my grandparents in Oświęcim (more widely known to foreigners as Auschwitz ;)), where I had been expecting to find one. But, as you see, I hadn't :(.

All - enjoy!

Shorty - yeah, definitely. Like I said, I got used to that after a while, but it was irritating. Great thanks for the help on that matter! :)

It is possible that another update will come tomorrow. Most probably in the evening, if so.

Great update :) . Does it mean that Pomerania will remain faithful catholic country during upcoming spread of protestantism? It`ll definitely make things very interesting.

A very nice journey-map.

thrashing mad - Well, remember Henry VIII was granted the title 'Defender of the Faith' by the Pope before breaking away a few years later.

Storm

During Bogusław's absence almost no events of note happened. His son, Jerzy I, proved to be a capable administrator and ruler during the time spent as the governor of the country. He repaid the loan taken back in the time of war, and, using merchants wisely, almost monopolised the three main centres of trade of the region, making the Baltic Sea an almost inner lake for Pomerania - at least trade-wise. Upon his father's return in the year of Our Lord 1513, news arrived of Denmark invading Sweden again - the Swedes appeared to be in a hopeless situation, being at the same time at war with the Grand Duchy of Moskva. Their allies, the Livonian Brotherhood couldn't help the Swedish much - most of their territory had already been under Russian occupation.

screensave18gg4.jpg

In the year 1515, everything seemed almost ideal. The lands under Pomeranian rule were providing the Duchy with income never yet experienced, the trading posts in Praha and Gdańsk were flourishing, sending back and forth valuable goods. This almost bucolic situation ended however on April 11, when our faithful allies, Poland, sent a message to Bogusław of Lithuania declaring war. They were in a coalition with Moldavia and Brandenburg, the latter being a surprise for the Duke. He decided to aid the Poles in this conflict, and immediately ordered a recruitation of some 8'000 men. They would be much needed, as Pomerania was to face about 70'000 German troops on the battlefields - as had been reported by Bogusław's intelligence. Right after strengthening his ducal force, he directed it through Ukermark towards Berlin, and then - to Schwerin. On the way they were intercepted by numerous Brandenburgian armies, some bigger, some smaller, but Bogusław's tactical mastery and the experience and technological superiority of his troops made them unbeatable.

screensave2jk8.jpg

Destroying Brandenburgian armies one after another, Bogusław decided to assault their cities only later, when the biggest threat, being the two remaining 20'000 men strong units, was eliminated. This was accomplished by June of the year 1516, when Bogusław's men defeated both of them in an epic battle near Mittelmark. The losses on both sides were huge but, taking into account the size of the German armies compared to Pomeranian - some thirty against thirteen thousand soldiers. Afterwards, it was almost easy for Bogusław, who, after building some more regiments, started capturing the cities from Brandenburg, one after another. Stendal (Altmark), Magdeburg, Berlin and Chotebuz (Niederlausitz) fell to the Pomeranian troops quickly and easily. Bogusław hoped to deal the final, crushing defeat to the German army defending Dresden in Saxony, using his old, good tactic of attacking from two directions. At that time, the Moldavian hospodar asked for peace in return for 50'000 ducats for the Pomeranian-Polish-Teutonic alliance - which offer Bogusław gladly accepted.

screensave10ph0.jpg

Unfortunately, the battle plan didn't work as desired. Somehow, the Germans were able to repel the attackers, dealing many casualties to the Pomeranians. The battle took place in mid-October of 1517, and by next year's February the ducal army was ready to strike again. This time, the majority of Pomeranian troops were infantry - much better suited to fight in the forested hills of Saxony. The Brandenburgians were crushed, and their last city, Dresden, fell in the end of March. Bogusław demanded of the Elector Count to become his vassal, and to cede the cities of Dresden and Chotebuz to Pomerania - at first, he declined, but after a few months, seeing that his defeat was total, he accepted Bogusław's demands. The problem remaining now was the Lithuanian front - it seemed to Bogusław that his allies were actually losing the war, with Königsberg in the hands of the enemy...

screensave27kf4.jpg

screensave28pn6.jpg

When Bogusław reached Gdańsk with his army, he intended to give his men a few months' rest and to recruit some more troops for the continuation of the war. Gdańsk of that time was one of the biggest, richest and most highly populated cities in Central Europe, paring with the Czech capital, Praha. Being a huge centre of trade, its economic growth was very dynamic. Due to the privileges it owed to Bogusław and his predecessors, it was able to monopolise all the main trade routes leading from Vienna, Praha and Hungary northwards, making it impossible to travel to Novgorod, Riga or Moskva without visiting the city - and its custom officials. Those kind people, however, didn't disturb in any way the guest who appeared in Gdańsk just two days after Bogusław's arrival. The man was called cardinal Sigismondo Giuliano Astore, the legate sent by His Holiness from Rome. The cardinal was to coronate Bogusław as the King of Pomerania - the Pope ordered for the ceremony to be held at the cathedral in Szczecin, the capital of the Duchy, on Chistmas Eve of 1520.

The newest part of my AAR. Hope it's any good.

thrashing mad - see what stnylan said...
Joking. I myself am not yet sure as to which way to choose.

stnylan - thanks. Hope this wasn't irony, as my skills with computer graphics-meddling reach no further than Paintbrush :eek:o.

Enjoy!

Vassalising Brandenberg must be sweet.

stnylan - it is indeed :)

thrashing mad - I wonder if I'm not making it all too easy for myself... Don't you think?

Damn. Nobody's reading this, except for stnylan (who, I guess, has to) and TM :(. I'm losing my motivation for this slowly...

Hope at least there's more readAARs who don't show up than comantators ;). But do remember, guys, "to view is human, to comment is divine"! ;)

Well you can always write some "civil war" event or something. :) Idon`t have much experience with MyMap, but I think that you're not so powerful yet.

Well there is more than thousand views of this AAR, so given your update rate I think that there is 30-40 readers, but yes they're not commenting much.

NOBODY"S READING THIS???

Count me in as one of the wise, then!

Congrats on surviving! Good luck with your attempt to 'manage' the blobs. I always find myself doing that whenever I play in Germany.

How big are you planning to get? Encompass all the low german lands? What role do you see this Pommerania doing in the future?

What is this map mod called MyMAP? Is it compatible with AGCEEP, does it use vanilla events, or does it have its own events? I like the look of the map, but don't want to give up the huge event trees...

Anyway...don't give up!
Cheers!

thrashing mad - well, as of now, no war seems to me in any way too difficult - as you have seen, despite BRA having 70k troops, I destroyed them completely without ever having more than 20k at once... And yeah, a civil war might come, after some time... ;)

TheExecuter - very nice to hear such kind words, sir :). I do have some long-term plans for my Pomerania, but I'm not yet sure whether I can fulfil them at all... Anyway, I'm not going to tell them to anybody yet :p.

As for MyMap - it uses some earlier version of AGCEEP, though I'm not sure which one... Some of the 1.40's, if I rememver correctly. Thus, if you used it, you wouldn't give up on the events and leaders - they are all there (except for some more newly-implemented, but still most of them are in place). I can definitely recommend it ;).
Thanks for reading :).

Lalalilo - Yeah, trve dharkh norvegian blakk methul (=me ;) :p :D ) looks better in the shadows, but I'd rather see a trace of you guys here ;).

I will probably write an update tomorrow, so expect it to be here on Friday evening or Saturday.

I'm reading this! In fact, I just read it. It's superb. Although I find the MyMap a tad annoying (mainly because I'm used to the vanilla map), the writing and the fighting is great. King now, and.. well, Emperor next? If you've vassalized Brandenburg, you're looking at a huge possibility of being the dominant German power.

And out of curiosity.. do you have any long-term plans for Pommerania? Like owning Germany, or perhaps expanding into Scandinavia?
