Chapter XXI
Pronoia, Elysium

Julu 11th, 1832

“It has gone too far, your majesty.”

The leader of the Viomíxanoi, a mighty interest group inside the Elyisian government consisting of industrialists and bankers, bowed his head slightly in deference to his king.

Looking up, he added:

“A civil war will cost millions – both lives and raw money. We feel it is in the country’s best interest to make a deal – a compromise – with the opposition. Right now transport, food and fuel supply and most government services in large parts of the country is paralyzed. With respect, your majesty, it cannot go on.”

He coughed nervously, as the king sat silently in front of him, saying nothing.

“As such, we suggest certain…changes are made in the terms of our country’s open borders. Closing them to certain…elements, restricting access, but not totally closing them…it would probably sate them.”

Silence.

“I have written down the Viomíxanoi’s suggestions, in detail. I am certain, your grace, that this will be of utmost importance for the realm.”

Silence.

As the Viomíxanoi’s leader was about to open his mouth again, the king looked up and started directly into his eyes.

It sent a shiver down his spine.

“No.”

That king strikes me as the sort of fellow whose silence is more terrifying than his words. He may seem well-intentioned, but IMHO he's a very dangerous man.

Such a short but imposing scene. It really sets the stage for what's to come!

Even if deposed, Georgios will probably be remembered fondly by later generations as a man ahead of his time.

The die is cast. Who will win the coming conflagration? Or will everyone lose? Elysia's internal conflict seems like a good time for... foreign elements.. to get involved.

Indeed he is...

Thanks! He will surely be remembered, yes.
Professional agitators should be blinded and castrated (We are Greek) before being traded overseas for a bucket of rusty nails with the border being closed behind them. Thanks for the update.
Now look at thar bloodthirsty duke in the corner! :D

Jard to say who, if any, will win.

Sometimes a ruler must make a stand for their principles. This is a good example.

Chapter XXII
Pronoia, Elysium

August 17th, 1832

Prince Georgios Galantinos stood on the balcony of the palace, looking at the carriage coming towards him. Inside, he knew, was his dear father. While only 11 years of age, Georgios knew a few things of the politicial situation in Elysium. His father made sure to include him, despite his young age, in the details of what would one day be his to decide.

Well, some of it.

He knew the Communists wanted large changes to the country’s laws. He knew his friend, the son of his father’s once regent, had been murdered. It made his blood boil. When he was king, no one would be allowed to do such things unopposed. He would not allow it.

He knew he would do whatever he could to further Elysium’s prestige, industry and power – make it a great power, a power to be reckoned with. Secure the borders. Perhaps he could lead an army as their commander? Could a king do that?

As he dreamed of this future, he noticed something happening at the gate. The carriage of his father had stopped, surely father was speaking with the guard on duty Georgios thought to himself. His father loved to take good care of his people.

But what was that man running towards the carriage doing? Georgios’ got a chill down his spine. That man was carrying something in his hand.

Now he threw himself under the carriage.

The explosion’s wave almost sent him to the floor, even this far away. He looked down towards the carriage.

There was no carriage.

King Georgios Galantinos, second of his name, wept. And there and then swore vengeance on the world.

As of right now I'm rooting for the boy king to throw it all away, Elysium to collapse into anarchy and everyone to belatedly realise that, despite his madness, Pavlos was actually the only one holding it all together.
I should have had more faith in this prediction.

Looks like Georgios II is going to become Alexandr III. I do have to wonder...do all children in V3 look like middle-aged clerks?

Not good...

Does the civil war still progress after the assassination?

Nice closing line to this chapter....

King Georgios Galantinos, second of his name, wept. And there and then swore vengeance on the world.
Notably, the word "authoritarian" is listed in the 11-year-old's profile (although he looks 45 or older). Guessing that King Georgios' revenge tour will be quite bloody.
