I have read praxiteles' notes on education, and largely understand them all. However, I have a couple of clarifying questions:

1) I am assuming that success of any educational path is based on the subject's base, unadjusted traits. Or, are there any traits that do count, such as "prodigy", etc.)? (In other words, my understanding is that if odds of success on the Martial path are largely determined by Martial and health traits, then the +2 Martial and +1 Health benefits for being on the military path don't go into this success calculation.)

2) Given that we have to select a school path when a child is 5, and trait improvement (excepting Health and Fertility) is based on random selection, then our choice of path is based on only partial knowledge of the child's skills, correct? (In other words, a child could show exceptional martial ability up until age 5, and then - after selecting military school - the random nature of the trait selection process could lead to a child ultimately strong in another trait and make the child a relatively weak martial candidate, correct?) Side question 1: At what age does development / trait improvement stop? Side question 2: At what age does the HTTM clock start ticking on determining educational results?

It's all found in the event files, in character_development_events.txt. It's the final (modified) values, rather than the unmodified base values, that determine the odds of getting particular education traits. The biggest effect, however, is gained from the education traits of the parents. So if the guy has a Midas Touched mother, he is (relatively) likely to be Midas Touched too, even if mommy has stats which make her useless as a steward nevertheless.

Oh, and regarding 2), stats increase on every birthday, up to and including the 16th birthday. Then, stat development stops, and the clock starts ticking for the education events.

Thanks, KonradRichtmark.

That's a big help. I always thought personality traits (selfish, proud, cruel, lustful, etc.) only had effects as per the trait effect - not for the change they made to the character's base statistics.

(I thought "selfish" had an effect as a personality trait, but the +1 modifier to stewardship caused by having the "selfish" trait had no effect - at least as far as education results are concerned.)

Now, does someone want to explain how my high Martial skill 2nd brother gets M1, while my inbred yougest (4th) brother (with, I presume, bad health) gets M3?... (We all have the same parents, BTW...)

Because the 2nd brother rolled poorly, and the 4th brother rolled well. That's randomness for you. Weighted randomness, but randomness nevertheless ;)

When it comes to personality traits, their arguably biggest effect is that they seriously weigh the probabilities of many events happening. Not to forget that personality traits affect how well characters think of other characters.
