@Wari Bana: Yeah, very silly of him.
Anyway update time...
Friedrich V Wilhelm der Grohe (1640-1688)
Friedrich knew right from the moment he took the crown that if Germany was to retain at the pinnacle of power, he would have to get its failing economy and skyrocketing inflation under control. He vowed to invest every penny in the national treasury to find a resolution to this problem, until such time as it was under control. Alas that he had inherited a realm full of unrest and instability. It seemed there was no end to the rebels and rabble-rousers.
- Sweden declared war on Transylvania, without asking Friedrich's permission or opinion on the matter. Friedrich risked Germany's reputation with her allies against open war with the Ottoman Empire. He opted to follow Denmark's refusal to join the war. Still all the national investments went to infrastructure...
- A great peasant rebellion took place, affecting the provinces greatly. It was all Friedrich could do to find enough troops to put down eight revolts... while still investing everything in infrastructure...
- The new world had been open for 150 years, but Germany had not yet got her fingers in the pie. Friedrich sought out his allies, to see if they would part with their explorations, but despite Germany's knowledge of Eastern Europe, they would not hear of his offers.
- Sweden declares war on Denmark, presumably still offended about the matter of 1645. Friedrich goes to Denmark's aid, mostly because he sees a fine opportunity to snap up some of Sweden's allies, namely Bohemia and Wallachia.
- Wallachia is the first to succumb...
- Objective completed, Moravia are captured and Bohemia's princes have no choice but to submit to German overlords. Sweden also has had enough and brokers a white peace... and still everything is invested in infrastructure...
- Friedrich commissioned a cathedral. Germany rejoiced, and the populate calmed down. Rebelliousness hit lows that had not been seen in decades.
- The Edict of Tolerance is issued, and Catholics and Protestants set their most stringent differences aside. Friedrich supports the Edict, particularly as it will aid his political aspirations in the future... and still not a penny goes elsewhere but to infrastructure...
- Papal States convert to Catholic! [OK too funny, I missed when they converted to something else in the first place. Wish I'd taken screenies of those events.]
- Friedrich opted not to aid Denmark in a war against Russia and Poland. Russia is not an adversary Germany is prepared to deal with at this time. It is too difficult to take provinces off Russia to gain favourable treaties. Maybe in the future... and still all Germany's money is poured into infrastructure research...
- The Bohemian princes are offered positions of administration inside the greater German state. Since their realm is not in their home territory of Bohemia anyway, they accept. Moravia is added to Germany.
- Germany goes to war with Denmark against Norway, but Friedrich does not move a single soldier to the north, nor change his research patterns at all. The Norwegians will eventually pay for peace, he knows. And one year later they do, offering a meager 22 ducats. But Norway is poor so Friedrich accepts.
- France gets a little carried away in its claims over former Burgundian lands. England, Netherlands and Germany have none of it. All three have legitimate causes for war. Friedrich immediately commissions new armies in the heartland and mobilizes on the French borders. All without moving a penny out of infrastructure research...
- All is ready, German armies are massed on the borders, against inferior French troops. Friedrich sends a token declaration and then his troops surge into France. There are setbacks but by June northern France is occupied and under siege. Portugal, France's ally, chooses to assail Germany's Greek possessions. Friedrich allows them to siege Hellas. It can be reconquered. The French siege Calais and Savoie, and are allowed to do so. They will also be retaken later. It is part of the plan.
- Paris is captured, and in it a great treasure. French maps! They show a lone rich province uncolonized. German colonists head for Connecticut and reach it months later.
- France offers Normandie, Champagne, Nivernais and Orleans as tribute. Friedrich accepts, rather gleefully. The French are humiliated.
- With Hellas recaptured, the Portuguese offer terms as well, and pay Friedrich 96 ducats in tribute. All in all a successful war for Germany, and not a single ducat, nor even a penny has moved from the infrastructure research budget.
- Lithuania have been weak for a long time, and just recently crushed again by the Poland - Russia alliance. Friedrich offers them a solution...
- An exceptional year! There is a reprieve in the inflation. For the third time in the last 4 decades deflation occurs! [Also had two Deflation events.]
- Friedrich V dies, but fear not, for there is yet another Friedrich to reign over Germany... and still all Germany's research investments go to infrastructure...
Almost there now, 5 years to go or so, and as you can see I'm stockpiling cash so I can invest in as many governors as I can. I even managed to gain some territory and reach the new world while investing 100% in infra non-stop. Pretty decent I think. Too bad most of the new world I can see is already colonized. I'll still get a piece of it.
