Karl V Leopold (1713-1740)

1713 - Karl's first act as emperor was to incorporate the realms of Venice into the empire. He gave the Venetian merchant lords high ranking offices in the provincial governments, and the provinces of Venice and Crete were added. How far Venice had fallen from her glory. Unfortunately this act caused the CoT in Venice to close.
Germany_1713c.jpg

1715 - Diplomatic expansion was the name of the game. Karl offered the Danish vassal kings a similar proposal to the one proffered to Venice the year before. It was readily accepted and the new provinces of Jylland, Sjaelland, Ostlandet, Finnmark and Iceland were added to the realm. Karl began sending sending colonists to the north and Finnmark in due time became a German province. [Note: I did this without saving once and that was when the two screens below were taking, so they show the wrong date, and a existing Norway in Ostlandet, which in fact is not the case. I forgot to take new screens.]

Thus in 1714 German Europe looked like this:
Germany_1714b.jpg

1715 - Immediately after the annexation Ottaman Empire declared war on Germany. Karl could not have been happier. The Ottomans were far from prepared for this war, and Karl's best generals were already in the Balkans. Daun and Anhalt-Sachsen moved at once into Ottoman territory. Banat, Thrace, Rumelia, Bosnia and others were all instantly under siege. Daun held the straits of the Bosporus against repeated attacks and eventually captured Istanbul.

1716 - Karl offered peace terms, for now content to add just the province of Banat to the realm. It was enough, he had other designs on the Balkans and Eastern Europe.

1717- Russia annexed Poland! Europe was shorn of yet another traditional power.

1720 - Karl was still sending settlers to the new world to finish the colonization of such provinces as Ottawa, Oshawa and others, those acquired from France earlier that were not yet cities.

1721 - With ulterior motives in mind Karl invited Transylvania to the alliance he had with the Netherlands, breaking a long standing tradition of the Transylvanians supporting the Ottoman sultans. The sultans were displeased and they declared war again shortly thereafter. Germany was still lurking in the Balkans and once again German armies sieged Ottoman provinces.

1722 - A quick peace was obtained after Germany captured Serbia and Ottomans captured Macedonia, neither Karl nor the sultan gained anything from this brief war. The rebels in Laurentia joined New Germany, casting off their ties to France.

1724 - Transylvania agreed to come under the protection of the German empire. And there was much rejoicing.
Germany_1724.jpg

1725 - Karl continued to warmonger, this time renewing the festering hostilities with France. France endeavoured to bring Spain and Portugal to the dance, but Spain wanted nothing to do with Germany at this point and refused.

1726 - The Portuguese attacked and burned several trading posts on the African coast thinking Karl would care. He did not. A German regiment marched through the French provinces in the new world, sacking them systematically. In April France offered to give up even more of her rights in the new world, surrendering Niagara, Detroit, Fox, Hindua and Michilimakinak to Germany. Karl also sent colonists to the nearby Miamis to claim that province as well.

1727 - Wallachia and Croatia joined the alliance.

1729 - Now it is England's turn to declare war. They too have a lot of undefended colonies, but their military presence in the new world is larger than Germany's is. German armies navigate around the English to claim some territories, while English armies siege the coastal provinces of France. This is not a war Karl wants right now, so he quickly offers peace as soon as he has the upper hand in the colonies. England accepts, realizing the folly of this war.

1733 - After 30 years of vassalization the Netherlands accept the idea that maybe it is indeed better to be German. They follow the example set by Venice and Denmark before them. Germany gains Holland and Friesen and a whole slate of colonies, two in South Africa and 7 in the East Indies. Only two of the East Indian colonies, and 1 African are complete so Germany takes over this colonization. Germany also acquires the CoT in Holland and in Jakarta, both of which are extremely wealthy. This addition proves very profitable.
Germany_1733.jpg

1736 - Wash, rinse, repeat, this is Karl's philosophy. Transylvania is the next acquisition, bringing with it two rich provinces in Transylvania and Moldavia and a massive army, totally 52,000 new troops.
Germany_1736.jpg

1737 - Karl's map makers outline the holdings of the German Empire:

New Germany:

German Empire:

Not shown are the colonies in South Africa, and a trading post on the South American mainland, as well as Iceland and the northern colony of Finnmark.

1740 - Karl V dies, after a long and successful reign. The emperor who will become known as Frederick the Great, is crowned in Berlin.

Comments: It's getting pretty easy to swallow up my vassals, even with a BB that is going up and a high inflation around 70% still my production and economy are high enough that I can handle the other majors easily, as long as its not all at once. Oddly though, for some reason I can't annex Croatia, despite meeting all 5 requirements. I don't even get the option.

I've got a good amount of time to play and to post updates so I can keep it going quickly so far. Question is, would you like me to do something about them? I've played another 20 years or so and not done that, but if you really want me to....

Well, those borders really look as though they were shouting: 'please, smoothen us, we don't want to look like that! Also, the people from Volyn would surely like to have a straight connection with their families in Moldavia... ;)

I'm surprised Russia has not done you the favor of a DoW yet. I agree with the others - the situation stands out on a map.

They hate me but haven't DoW'ed yet. I sent them a warning to see if I'll get a CB out of it. If not, I may just have to try claim their throne. But I will do what you requested. :)

Nicely going! You seem to crush everything that gets in your way. I wholeheartedly support a war against Russia. Wars due to aestethical reasons are always justified. ;)

Is Croatia Orthodox? That might be the reason, as you need "matching" religions.

Friedrich VIII the Great (1740-1786)

1741 - The Balkan states (among others) split from Ottoman Empire in a mass rebellion when Istanbul is captured by rebel elements. Friedrich sees a golden opportunity to remove the Ottomans from Europe entirely. Quickly he adds Bosnia, Albania and Serbia to an alliance, Bulgaria joins later.

1742 - Albania and Serbia become vassals of Germany, joining Croatia as a Balkan vassals to Friedrich. One year later Bosnia and Bulgaria do likewise. In 1743 the Balkan political situation in relation to Germany is as follows:
Germany_1743.jpg

Friedrich spent the rest of the first decade of his reign crushing rebels in various provinces, expanding his trading interests and completing colonies in America, Africa and the East Indies.

1753 - In February, Albania, the first of the new states, has her independence ended. Tblisi and Ragusa become German cities. In October, Bulgaria is added in a similar maneuver, followed by Serbia in November.

1754 - Bosnia is also added, but Croatia continues to refuse. The Sunni rulers will not countenance such a proposal, much to Friedrich's frustration and chagrin.

1755 - The German Balkans now look like this. Friedrich has designs on Rumelia and Kosovo yet, to complete his holdings and finally banish the Ottoman's from Europe.
Germany_1755.jpg

1756 - Friedrich declares war on the Ottoman Empire. German fleets blockade the Bosporus, preventing the Sultan's armies from relieving the sieges in Thrace, Rumelia, Ionia, and Kosovo.

1758 - In June, the Ottomans offer peace terms, their capital in ruins once again. Friedrich accepts Kosovo, Rumelia and Ionia as tribute, and his armies and fleets withdraw from Istanbul. It has taken Germany two centuries, but the Ottoman Empire has been completely driven out of Europe. They hold only the island of Corfu, and Friedrich is uninterested in this acquisition.

1761 - Sweden joins the alliance as Friedrich turns his attention to the west of the Empire. Spain and France both hold territories that Germany covets.

1763 - Spain declares an embargo on Germany. Friedrich could not be more pleased. This will offer an excuse for war, and he begins to muster thousands of new troops.

1764 - Germany and Sweden declare war on Spain and Portugal. Germany's armies are far more prepared for this war than Spain's are, and quick sieges are raised in Maine, Brabant, Lombardia, Lyonnais, Franche-Comte, Zeeland, Bourgogne, Liguria and Berri. Portugal makes a separate peace, leaving Spain on her own. Germany also captures two undefended colonies in North America.

1766 - Spain sues for peace after all the sieges are ended. Friedrich is magnificently victorious despite a heretic revolution that threatened to ruin his plans the year before.
Germany_1766.jpg

1771 - Germany continues to be an unstable empire, massive religious uprisings occur all across the empire. Friedrich spends the next 3 years putting down rebellions and re-capturing lost provinces.

1774 - The German Empire in Europe:
Germany_1774.jpg

1783 - Friedrich submits to popular pressure to remove Russia's influence from former Polish provinces. A warning to Russia fails to gain a CB, but some time later Russia rejects German merchants and declares an embargo. Friedrich's response is immediately, well planned and violent.

1785 - With all the Polish provinces captured, and Friedrich himself marching his armies into the heart of Ukraine, Russia is well beaten and asks for peace. Friedrich has captured more territory than planned, and Germany cannot absorb all the conquests. He settles for 6 of the 8 Polish provinces, Podolia, Masovia, Carpathia, Galizien, Poznan and Podlasia. Krakow and Wielkipolska stay Russian for now, but cut off from Mother Russia:
Germany_1785.jpg

Germany_1785b.jpg

1786 - Tuscany has long ago made herself an enemy of Germany by her embargo and now, shorn of all allies but Savoy, Friedrich sees that the Italians are ripe for picking. Sadly, he does not live to see the end of this war. His nephew will assume the Imperial crown and see this war out.
Germany_1786.jpg

OOC: Your wish is my command, readAARs. Russia has been relieved of her Polish possessions. Don't worry about the last two. They rebel and form Poland shortly.

Friedrich IX Wilhelm (1786-1797)

1786 - Mantua is captured from Tuscany, Piedmont is well under siege and Friedrich sends a fleet around to siege Firenze. He also buys military access from the Papacy to make resupply to the siege army easier.

1788 - Piedmont is captured, and vassalized. Firenze is captured and Mantua ceded to Germany. Tuscany is already a vassal of Savoy and can't be vassalized or annexed.

1790 - Poland frees itself from Russia.

1792 - England declares war. Friedrich sees an opportunity to grab some colonies. German forces march through undefended and unfortified provinces in America. Germany completely ignores England's invading forces, except Blucher, who crushes an invading force in Picardie. Peace is obtained quickly, and 6 colonial provinces added. The whole engagement takes 6 months.
Germany_1792.jpg

1793 - The Second Heretic Rebellion takes place. Again it takes several years to crush the rebellion and restore order.

1796 - Poland is vassalized to Germany.
Germany_1796.jpg

1797 - Friedrich's reign is comparatively short. Yet another Friedrich will take the throne, the 10th of this name.
Germany_1797.jpg

OOC: these two updates just about catch me up to where I've played to so far (1804). Getting close to the end. I plan to diplo-annex Savoy and Poland yet. Anything else you'd like to see? I have a good excuse (Napoleon) to trash France (and Spain) yet if you like. I'm glad its almost done, in a way, because lately I've done so much rebel crushing the game is starting to get annoying. Finally back to +1 Stab though. Hope to keep it there for a while.

You've hit that point where you are running out of time to do all the things you want to do. At least finish gobbling up France and teach those Turks a lesson or two before it's over.

One vote for France and one for Russia. I prefer France myself, simply because I can hit them in France and in the colonies, and because winter attrition is a non-issue. Plus if Spain honors their alliance with France I can hammer them too....

If my wars are quick I might have time for Russia too though. But that might be pushing it. I have 13 years left to play right now. Also I'm thinking I will release all possible vassals in December 1812, just to see what they all are. Should be lots.

Freidrich X Wilhelm (1797-1819)

1799 - Friedrich finally ends a long standing order of business of the German emperors, the removal of the insolent kingdom of Savoy. The vassal kingdom is annexed and added to the empire.
Germany_1799.jpg

1803 - Napoleon announced his ambitions to the world. Spain, Portugal, Russia and England all express hostility. Friedrich sees great possibilities in doing likewise. German armies begin to mobilize once more, in prelude to war with France.

1806 - The remaining two Polish provinces cast away their nationalistic allegiances and are absorbed into the surrounding empire of Germany.
Germany_1806.jpg

1807 - With his preparations complete Friedrich declares war on France. Spain chooses to stay out of it, Friedrich is unsure whether he is grateful or sad about this. France is ill prepared but has one large army with two strong commanders in Morbihan, one of which is Napoleon. Napoleon leads 10,000 troops into Armor and defeats Wrede, but Wirtemberg follows up with 58,000 German troops and crushes the last of Napoleon's force, killing the general in the process. Then he turns south and smashes Le Marren's army in Armor. With both armies annihilated Germany is free to set siege to all France's provinces in France and North America.

1808 - Portugal is bribed out of the war, leaving France alone.

1810 - Frances accepts a peace treaty conceding Cevennes, Calais and Flanders along with two colonies. Despite between totally humbled they will give no more. Friedrich notes this and vows to get his just desserts from France one more time.
Germany_1810.jpg

1813 - Friedrich cannot declare war on France without breaking a truce, but he can declare war on Portugal and hope France joins. He does so, and France does join the war. The Portuguese are more reluctant to be bribed from the war this time. It takes some defeating before they accept a peace. France meanwhile has no armies to speak of and before long they are once again under heavy siege.

1815 - France cedes more territory to Germany under the new treaty. Dauphine and several more colonies, including the Center of Trade in Mississippi are added. Friedrich now feels like he has gotten his reward.
Germany_1815.jpg

1818 - At the end of 1818, with a year to play the German Empire looks like this.

New Germany:
Germany_1818a.jpg

German East India (Taiwan, Luzon, Manado, Buru, Ceram, Sorong, Jakarta):
Germany_1818b.jpg

German South Africa (Ciskei, Transkei, Natal):

So that's it, I thank everyone who read and commented. I enjoyed it so I plan to do another AAR soon. Hope you enjoyed it as well. I accomplished everything I set out to do, except for the BB below 10 thing which kind of went out the window in the last century.

That was a very nice AAR and probably it was a fun game to play. For the first time I was seriously considering posting a comment in this AAR than I readed but not commentated, I see than this is over. :(

Anyway this was nice, I'll be waiting for your next AAR Anarion.

A bit late, but still congratulations on finishing this AAR - accomplishing all the objectives surely is great, and becoming a huge Empire on the way is even greater :). Good to see that you have started another AAR - I will surely follow it!
