Poland and Spain sound like an oopsie on my part. An alliance with Poland should be something you can primarily get via the GER-POL relation decision/event chain, I've probably messed up neutrality on them some time ago and didn't notice it since :S But well, that's why it's good to get some actual players lol

Japan can indeed try to take the weaker peace deals in the first peace proposal, and they have some chance of succeeding (though it's not too great)

The history is railroaded insofar that 1. Japan will always attack China (or in the future potentially SOV in accordance with the northern strike event chain) and 2. Germany always needs to start the war (or alternatively it will just be attacked by the Soviets at some point). I don't think Hearts of Iron works well as a game if those two things don't happen, or at least not with even more AI and event support - there's a communist GER event in EoD in theory, but almost none of the historical events check if it was picked, so...

Edit: Also, one question - wouldn't the lack of oil dissuade you from upgrading Inf to other divisions, or am I severely underestimating how good Mot/Mec without oil would be?
Another weird thing happened, after I took out Yugoslavia, then declared war on Sweden, both right after Prague, the allies did not declare war, but there appears to be two events about splitting up Yugoslavia, one that is between "set up puppets" and "total occupation" and another which is about "share with allies" or "no, don't share". As I chose to share with allies France instantly declared war on me, and netted a very large amount of dissent, to the point of me only noticing it because they had revolts flaring up in their country.

I'm done for today but I imagine the tanks whose speed you have buffed will slice right through the French troops of high dissent, and a single 30 stack of heavy submarines still give you total domination over the British navy, so I don't foresee any issues with sealion either.

Anyway I have had all the debug stuff on since the start if its of any interest.

Speaking of the debug stuff, I noticed that in SwitchAI.txt, the Chinese did not go into some sort of defeated mode. I'm assuming that they will attack Japan because of that? I'm not sure how you modded it exactly, but I do know that only the puppet can ever happen through the peace deal decision, and I do know that Japan and others have an AI file to switch over to for when they are basically done with ww2. There seems to be no post-defeat or post-victory chinese AI active, they are just sitting there. 41 days it took japan to win, by the way, so I'd argue that you've certainly made AI Japan more interesting to fight as player China.

They won so fast, that I never was asked to recall my advisor to China by Japan, which leads to the question you had: I am not lacking in oil, it is rare materials that is the main issue.

CHI is supposed to load a different switch, but only after it wins; France DoWs at high GER belligerence, though it should probably bump up their interventionism first...
Edit: They actually have 9 or 10 interventionism, but being completely democratic still makes the DoW penalty give 100% dissent :I
 
Yupp. The whole poland thing is broken, weird considering theres a non 0% event chain to be friends with poland in eod as it is.
But in my game, despite being my ally, they refused the event chain to be my ally, which may or may not have been the cause. Right after France fell, soviet union then took a huge dissent hit in 1939 right as they are weak to attack poland, romania, italy, greece, bulgaria and croatia, so its definitively weird there.

Better news from China: It ended up in a civil war which was kind of nice that they did not just consolidate then easily encircle entire japanese units in a war against them, as those units would be in poor position to hold out.

Regarding RK Scandinavia, I see that you only made minor edits to espionage. To me they are not in a good state. They have under 10 ic, and build double-brigaded infantry. I think that given that Scandinavians were seen relatively positively by Hitler, it is strange that united under German leadership they are essentially useless. RKs in the east are a hundred times more useful, and there we are simulating a massive strife, with settlers moving in, tearing down of the big cities. If anything it should be opposite, but then again it comes down to: should puppets get cores or not? Because sometimes they do, and sometimes they dont, and it usually makes no sense. Like if you liberate the south of the USA as Germany? Cores. The Union state? Claims.

But none of that is related to your edits, I know.

More relevant, I have been trying to find the file for how the AI usually reacts when Poland allies Germany, but I can't. Presumably, apart from the befriend germany part in the polish AI file, having them always sign the pact if allied with Germany would solve the issue. There has got to be something where the french and UK's AI guarantees the independence of Yug, Hun, Swe etc or gets an event triggered war if the German-Polish axis attacks one of them.

RKs generally don't get cores, but I'd agree that RK Scandinavia seems to be totally halfassed though; there aren't many (any?) events for them after the initial setup, and the AI just falls back to completely generic stuff. I can try figuring something out for them - maybe a slow industry buildup (getting more cores) and trying to capitalize on steel industry/ships?

I've fixed the neutrality issues and some other more or less minor things. I'll setup guarantees for neutral countries since that sounds like a good idea - most of what was done for GER + POL alt history was making sure all relevant decisions and events check not just whether POL does not exist, but also whether it's in Axis.

I did a quick play though as the UK, and overall I'd say it's an good improvement on the AI of the normal game. One possible bug I have seen is that the AI seems to have trouble prioritising fronts. I was forced to do a 1942 D-Day because Germany was rolling over the Soviet Union, but while still advancing to the Urals, Germany only sent about 10 divisions to the West to stop me. I was easily able to take over France and then all of Germany before the Soviets recaptured Moscow. In the base game the Germans always strategically redeployed about 50 divisions every time I landed in France. Additionally, Germany didn't even have all of their beaches covered with a garision. I was able to land in Dieppe without a fight.

I think this happens at least partially because I disabled the strat redeploy cheat that gave the AI a really low max duration of redeploying units, but I tried to kind of circumvent that already by making GER get some garrisons to defend against early invasions. I'll take a look at increasing beach prios, and I'll try to get it out in a few days together with some JAP-CHI improvements and improved Allied reactions to early GER aggression that have been mentioned earlier.

Playing Germany on normal/normal. No early war i follow historical dates and historical axis members. But on 17 jan 1940 out of the blue i got the message that Greece joins my axis. I didnt get even the option to decline. Also Turkey joined axis without an option to decline. At that time only puppet Slovakia was in Axis.

Then on 22 may 1940 i occupied Paris and an event pop up that Italy wants to join. Thats ok with me. But after one day they leave the axis and rejoin 1 sec later..... I thought members of an alliance cant leave the alliance when at war?

I dont know if this related to your modifications or it was already existing in EOD 2.3 mod. Maybe u can look how this could happend. For the rest i enjoy playing the mod, its not that hard so far. Hope barbarossa would be more difficult.
 
GRE and TUR joining should be related to Allies attacking them (to try and get another front up via the Balkans early) - was that not the case?
I'll try to figure out the Italy thing, but I don't think I've seen something like that happen before
 
No that was not the case. I checked it in the history log. No one declare war on Greece or Turkey. They just join Axis. After that ofcourse they were at war with the Allies, because i was already as Germany

Yes event was pop-up that west is losing the war.So i accept via that event Italy in Axis and then they leave one day later and rejoin.

I have attach the save game, so maybe u can see whats going wrong. Rename *.txt to *.eug

I've been playing EoD too. :) I have only messed with cheating to make a tech mod that gives good techs, better than anything "modern," but hopefully not too cheaty; basically, a "story mode" option for people to see the depth of the mod and test out later game events in the fifties.

Japanese Northern Strike is one of the great crimes of the century. It seems as if a page was left out as to why Japan and Germany never cooperated in taking down the USSR, or what their alliance even meant. Definitely go for it.

Do you use forum boards, or the ever popular grooming platform, discord, to allocate your time resources to get some help? I can play around and learn more about modding to help out.

@Sheien I'm having trouble connecting to that particular MEGA link. Perhaps, setting the link to locate the base file for download instead of a folder would make connection simpler.

@Sheien I downloaded the mod. I don't know what I did, maybe right-clicked the file.

So, I had the Weimar flag prohibition event and the military units defaulted to that navy/cyan placeholder flag.

Although it's unlikely to play a game where these two techs will make much of a difference, I fixed what EoD had going on with some incomplete research by just adding in the tech specialties.

Thank you so much for the shout-out to EoD! It's great to see mods still in development for Darkest Hour. I worked on the later versions of EoD, particularly flavor events after capitulation of the USSR. I really struggled with tweaking the AI, particularly with naval invasions. Please don't hesitate to use any of the work within EoD and reach out to me if I can be of any help. I may fire up this mod if I find the time one of these days - having kids has taken away almost all of my gaming and modding time these days.

I've uploaded a new version that fixes some of the raised issues, makes Allies more assertive vs GER that declares wars early, and has a bit harder/more consistent difficulty on Normal/Hard/Very Hard for Axis, + I tried to make the CHI-JAP front better, fixed some stupid Africa things AI was getting hung up on too much, and overall tweaked a bunch of events, AI tech research priorities, naval priorities and scripts. I haven't been able to find what causes TUR/GRE to join Axis without choice for GER yet, and didn't have time to work on Northern Strike JAP scripts :(

I had to swap MEGA to a Folder because a single file kept changing the link after each update - linking the folder feels more convenient as a result, glad you were able to download it!

I think I didn't update the NATO counter for the transitory German tricolor - any idea where those would be? That'd be probably why it's missing. It should be there without counters, but in any case it goes away after a year or so.

Yeah it's really tough to work with the AI in DH, and most stuff is very vaguely documented I feel like :D If you would ever be willing to help with porting AOI portraits and adding the new Leader modifiers, that's something I was definitely struggling with - I think there are still a few leader modifiers only AOI has, and I kind of lost track of if EOD ever implemented them for other countries at all or not. I had a really hard time with trying to make Leaders work at all for the French State and British Union (the Union likely still does not work fully to date), and after that I kind of left Leaders in a messy state.

Huge thanks for working on EOD! I don't think I would play DH as much if not for that mod, it hit just right and had the right amount of cool stuff without making the game something unrecognizable for me =)

I'm downloading the latest version now. I've been playing this version of Edge of Darkness as the USA and enjoying myself quite a bit. I like to extend the game play to incorporate the entire Special Units tech tree but could not find the line of code in the 1933.eug file to extend the game past January 1961. What am I missing?
