Hey guys,

I've got a big problem with my installation of HoI2. Every time I start the game, the normal loading screen appears after the intro. It loads up to 2/3 telling me that "global data" is loaded.

Then the music, which starts during the loading progress stopps, and after 2 seconds, a bluescreen appears telling me that windows was stopped to prevent damages. I only can restart the pc on this point.

The error-code is:
STOP: 0x0000009C (0x00000004, 0x80545FF0, 0xB2000000, 0x00070F0F)

The help finding the bug, I'll post all important information here again, as I did in my support mail (on which I got no answer till now)

Settings:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ CPU
ASUS K8N Mainboard with Realtek ALC 850 AC97 Sound onboard
ATI Radeon 9600 pro GPU
512 MB DDR400-RAM
Netgear WG111T WLAN USB-Adapter

OS: Windows XP Home SP2
HoI: Hearts of Iron 2, v.1.3a (german)

Direct X 9.0c and latest drivers for graphics, mainboard and sound are installed

Re-Installing HoI2 did no changes.
Shutting down all unimportant background processes too.

In some cases, HoI2 starts correctly in round about every 4th try.

Okay you said you mailed support about this and got a reply, so why post here?
Sorry but I am not understanding.

"I got no answer till now" = You now have an answer. ;)

However I will chalk this up to maybe a language translation error.
Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

oh sorry for my bad english, here are the information I got...

You gave me the part I told you you could leave out, it is everything in the file before what you gave me is the part I need.

I'm afraid you've got a serious hardware related problem.

This is the microsoft information regarding your stop error:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=162363&sd=RMVP
also this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329284

It has nothing to to with the game, although the code the game runs does trigger it. Most common cause is overheating. Have you overclocked your system?

Edit: Dug a bit deeper in the Intel diagnostic documentation.

The error has occured on memory address B200 0000 0007 0F0F
This memory cell is located in DRAM bank #4

If you get the stop error with the same memory address and DDR bank number locations each time it crashes, you should consider running a thorough memory test, or replace the memory modules.

@jpd:
I hope I don't. My CPU is quite cool (about 40 degrees after 2h running) and my system isn't overclocked in any way. My Mainboard got only 3 DRAM banks?!?. How can I check my RAM not being the cause of it?

@both: Thanks for your help with a problem which is proberbly not related to the game...

The number of DDR modules does not equal the number of memory banks your memory controller thinks there are. This is dependant upon how the DDR modules are fabricated, and in which slot(s) you actually inserted those DDR modules.

If you want to know, pause your system during the boot sequence, just before the Windows loader kicks in. The BIOS summary screen lists how many banks there are from the viewpoint of the controller.

To run a thorough memory test, use the tool you can find here:
http://www.memtest86.com/

It was able to reveal the memory problems my own previous system was having, and explained some rather odd behaviour some programs were exhibiting, similar to what you are now experiencing.

I moved on of my RAMs from bank 3 to bank 2, now it seems to work better.
Anyway, I will check my RAMs for errors, but the program you told me was to difficult to handle. Thanks anyway.

Bad RAM can cause you all sorts of problems, best get it looked at as soon as possible.

Well, I tried now with other RAMs which are surely okay, but the problem is still there. My old RAM was alright too, I changed it with my brothers PC.
Any other thoughts?

I thought moving the ram fixed the problem?

Maybe the problem is with the Motherboard then.

Yup. Can't rule that out.

It was, in fact, what was wrong with my previous hardware set. The memory tester revealed over 4000 memory errors. Exchanged DDR modules. Now I "only" had about 3000 memory errors. Further analysis showed that those 3000 errors corresponded, location wise, with 3000 of the 4000 errors that showed up with the original memory modules. That got me thinking. That memory modules can have errors, I can accept. But I can't accept that different modules have errors on identical locations.

So I threw out the old motherboard and processor, and replaced it with a new one. And guess what, where in the old mobo+processor those new memories had some 3000 errors, in the new mobo+processor they were all of a sudden error free.

I'll try it now with only one HDD installed, because most of the errors seem to appear when workiung on my D-Drive, where HoI2 is installed too.

If it won't fix the error, I have to try another Mainboard. Thanks you 2 up to now for your great support.

Keep us updated.

It seems that a possibly damaged HDD caused the errors. I changed my d-drive and installed HoI2 again. It seems to work now, otherwise I'll post here again. But I'm quite optimistic, because several starts were successful now, for abou 2 days now. I expect the drive (which was detected correctly by Windows) to be the damaged component, because most problems where more or less directly connected to harddrives...
