So I was thinking about how once a realm reaches a certain size it hardly ever collapses (For example the way Rome collapsed, or how the Abbasids faded into irrelevance.) and I was wondering if their could be an event to simulate something like that.

For example lets say Empire A has a realmsize of 100. Their capital has just been sacked by a group of raiders or has been lost in a war. The vassals a certain distance away from the capital will then get an event to become independent or stay with Empire A. If they choose to go independent Empire A gets an event to reconquer the province or leave it alone. If the vassal wins the ensuing war Empire A would enter into a more severe stage of realm collapse and vassals even closer to the capital would become independent and more peasant and religious rebels would pop up. And if it is possible the MTTH for these events should be increased or decreased based on the rulers traits.

Would this be possible to implement?

Empires don't just... plop. It's not like when Alaric sacked Rome the rest of the empire went their own way. (Actually, by that point the capital of the WRE was Mediolanum, not Rome.) The rest of the empire fell outside of the empire's control through a variety of ways, but the biggest was because hordes of barbarians were coming and taking it. It was either let them have it or face total annihilation.

The rebellions idea is good; maybe not as a response to losing an independence war, but in response to growing hard times on the empire. However, I could easily see that turning into a downward spiral of doom once things start looking bad for you.

If we're going to keep adding anti-blob measures, we need to make sure they're realistic measures, not divine intervention because someone's doing too well.

In real life, what happens when a civilization has reached its peak and it looks like no one can challenge the empire's supremacy?
Someone even scarier comes along and invades the f**k out of them. Maybe that's how we should combat blobs; not with independence wars but with invasions. That might also put a stop to all the ancient legends getting wiped out by dynasties like "ek Tiny Little Nothing Holding".

technically, there's DR's planned succession mechanic for the LI-pagan religions, where a realm collapse is possible if the heir is weak.
of course, IIRC, I think he implemented it, then removed it, and is implementing a modified version of it...

still, lore-wise, the main reason why a lot of LI realms, specially the two Roman ones, collapsed conveniently before our 1066 bookmark had to do with religion and authority. So a complicated event chain is one possible way of doing it, but a proper conceptualization that's both plausible and implementable needs to be thought of first. DR's realm collapse mechanic was one step towards it, but IIRC he withdrew it because it was heard to implement in such a way that was fun gameplay.

How about creating a new casus belli called something like topple Realm. It would only be avalible to realms of a certain size that meet specific religious, prestige, and cultural requirements. If they win the war they can take all occupied territory. Then all the vassals of the realm that lost the war get an event were they can assert independence.

Now that is an idea. :D

First step in your education would be reading through the files in common/cb_types/. If you have questons you can ask here or in the Modding Quick Questions thread.
