If that had happened (which would have been very doubtful) I don't believe Britain would have got involved, because it would have been a war of aggression. This is why I think Britain should be neutral at the outset of the game and be able to enter via an event of some sort.

i don't know if my post is right here... but i will try it.
the manpower pool of GB should be accidental because at the beginning of the war they had no conscription.
OK, the british people had a lot of enthusiasm like other people in nations that joined the war but that shouldn't be ignored.

I believe Teddy R even wanted to lead a calvary brigade himself. :p

Wasn't he a bit old by then? I know he led the Rough Riders at San Juan Hill in 1898. Nice Man. Big Stick, too.

I understand that there will be no Treaty of Versailles event. If there is, then it should be countered by some sort of Treaty for the Central Powers.

Is there a Brest-Litovsk event?

Would would be the equivalent event for dealing with a defeated Britain and France?

I've read parts of Fischer's 'Germany's War Aims' and it proves that Germany aimed at the creation of Mitteleuropa, a German dominated trade area (European Union in 2003 surely? :D), with Belgium being annexed, as well as various British naval ports around the world, including HK, Aden, Gib., the Falklands being ceded to Germany. There was also the concept of Mittelafrika with the Congo, Northern Rhodesia and so on being annexed.

Either that, or the game can go on until one country annexes or enpuppets the enemy. :)

I think this would make a good "colour" event:

Country = Argentina Date = 1916 Condition = Argentina is not at war with either the Allies or the Central Powers.
Effect: Shift Argentina's alignment/war entry status slightly in favour of Britain.

In 1916, Britain arranged to buy a large number of mules from Argentina, to be used to equip the army they were sending to Iraq. However, Germany's top secret agent in Argentina, Herr Arnold, heard of this and managed to infect and kill 200 of the mules with anthrax spores concealed in sugar lumps. (The anthrax had been smuggled into the country by the French-born mistress of a German diplomat in Buenos Aires.) The plan backfired when the British Admiralty's code-breaking section discovered the plot, and the British ambassador arranged an audience with the Argentine President Irigoyen to demonstrate the anthrax-infected sugar lumps to him. This helped sway Argentina's neutral stance over towards sympathy with the Allies.

And yes, it's a true story. :)

That's good! It'd be quite fun for the person playing as Argentina, contemplating whether to join the Entente or the Central Powers, to be suddenly confronted by this mules-poisened-by-anthrax story - probably the only event that can be thought up for Argentina. :D

I wonder how the increasing dissent inside the warfaring nations would be modelled. IRL as the war dragged on, Germany, France but especially Austria-Hungary and Russia were ravaged by strikes, riots etc. which led essentially to governments falling in Germany, A-H and Russia in 1917/18.

Maybe some sort of yearly event that rises dissent as long as no decisive gains were made?

Example: year = 1915, GER does not occupy Paris or Petrograd
--> dissent rises +10%

Just my 2 cents.

Changing the subject a moment - I've seen Irishpony's post on 5-3-03 on Irish events, but do you have anything more detailed? If not I'd suggest this:

----
001 - The Third Home Rule Bill
"The voices of Irish nationalists calling for independence are growing ever louder; but their Unionist opponents are creating armed militias and threatening civil war to preserve the link to Britain. In an attempt to prevent bloodshed, the British government has begun once again to consider granting self-rule to Ireland. How should we act?"
Date: mid-August 1914. Condition - UK is at war with Germany

Only one option: "We can do nothing until the war is over".
Triggers 003, no other effects.
----
002 - The Third Home Rule Bill
Date: mid-August 1914. Condition - UK is NOT at war.
# This is a hypothetical, non-historical event. Description as above.

action_a: "Grant Home Rule to Ireland"
Create Ireland as an independent country, but a puppet of UK.
(Ireland should include the entire island, including Ulster).
UK unrest should increase.
Ireland should get massive unrest - or even a civil war versus the northern province, although this might be over the top to actually code...

action_b: "Ireland shall remain British"
UK unrest should increase by a very large amount.
Choosing this option also triggers 003
----
003 - The Easter Rising
"Irish Nationalists have seized control of the centre of Dublin!"
Date: 24 April 1916
Conditions: either 001 or 002 action_b have occurred. UK must be at war with GER.

action_a: "Crush the rebels"
Causes a small unrest increase. Triggers 004.

action_b "Grant concessions"
Causes a significant reduction in manpower (and reduction in ICs in Irish provinces?)
----
004 - Ourselves Alone
"After the recent sweeping election victory for the Irish Nationalist party Sinn Fein ('Ourselves Alone') the Irish Republican Army has now begun a campaign to make Ireland ungovernable by the British."
Date: After 1 January 1919
Conditions: 003 action_a has occurred.
Only one option. "We must suppress this criminal banditry"
Unrest increases, manpower is reduced. Triggers 005.
----
005 - The Irish Free State
"With no end in sight to the unrest in Ireland, the British Government been driven to negotiate with the Nationalists on Irish independence"
Date: After 1 July 1921
Conditions: 004 has occurred.
UK is NOT at war with GER (so this event might never occur, depending on whether the mod ends when the war does).

action_a "Create the Irish Free State"
Creates Ireland (with its historical borders) as an independent state. Reduces UK unrest.

action_b "Grant limited Home Rule"
Creates Ireland (including Ulster) as a UK puppet. Does not reduce UK unrest.

action_c "We will fight to keep Ireland British!"
Creates Ireland (with its historical borders) as an independent state. IRE is at war with UK.
----

You may also want to put in an Irish event for the Irish Civil War of 1922-23, but that might be outside the scope of the mod.

Stephen

The idea of Home Rule was abandoned because of the outbreak of war, so it would seem sensible in my mind to trigger a Home Rule event if Britain does not join the Entente, and delay it if they do.

If Home Rule is selected, I think an independent Ireland (with military access to the UK) should appear but Ulster should emerge as a 'new nation' a la India in the standard HOI in the territory of Belfast, as I do recall the Unionists claim that they were going to fight for independence if Home Rule was granted to Dublin.

Then again, the player is always given the choice of choosing what actually happened, namely, the Irish Free State with Northern Ireland as part of the UK.

Just thoughts that suddenly occurred to me, but I think it's best that better informed Irish folk do these events. :)

Are there enough country tags to have an independent Ulster?

As an alternative, you could have the following sequence of events:

Britain grants Home Rule: Ireland becomes independent.
Ireland is now faced with an event: cede Ulster back to Britain, or face crippling unrest, infrastructure damage in the northern province, etc.

The Unionists were not only saying they would fight, but they were being supplied with arms by Germany! In April 1914 25,000 rifles were smuggled into the country illegally...

Carson or Craig as head of state/government?

Chief of Staff would surely have to be Sir Hubert Gough, especially when one considers the Curragh mutiny.

Sir John French was an Ulsterman but he doesn't seem the rebellious type.

Does anyone know of any plot by the German's to instigate rebellion in India to draw away English strength from the Western Front?

I have vague recollections of hearing/reading about this but can't recall. It went something like this:

The Germans were going to ship a good supply of weapons and ammunition to some separtist group, but some petty bureaucrat in some neutral country became a little to interested and put a stop to it...guess he wasn't bribed enough.

If this is true it would make a pretty cool event for three countries.
Germany loose some supplies to instigate a rebellion in India
Britain be annoyed with a rebellion in India
third country gets a chance to let the plan succeed or intervene.

Wilhelm II commented on the outbreak of war: 'if they attack us, they shall at least lose India'

The Kaiser had made himself the self styled leader of the muslim world on various visits to Turkey, and in 1914 promised to 'unleash the fury of the muslim world' against Britain.

Didn't seem to quite work...

Too bad for him. It would still make a pretty cool series of events though.
