Why isn't EU and later time period games's maps portrayed as globes? Would be more logical and pleasant to the eyes than the abomination of Mercator. :S

Imagine playing EU IV on a globe like that.

it's because the Clausewitz engine simply doesn't work like that. to force a 2.5D or 3D satellite perspective as opposed to the tried and true omnipotent god view would simply require a whole new video game engine capable of handling the third dimension. and even then, would it even be worth it? the satellite perspective would just make it difficult to see things on the periphery of the screen when the regular view you can clearly see what is happening. sure, you'd need to scroll the map over either way, but with 2.5/3D viewing, you'd need to center the screen on what your looking at to get a clear sense of what is happening. hate to say it, but it would sadly just boil down to being an inefficient, time consuming, and distracting gimmick.

I do understand why you'd want a map view like this though:)

Codewise not a problem.

however.. just makes for crappier game, with less overview.

Anyone remember Populous the Beginning? That was one of the last games that was any good that I played that used a spherical world. It did it very well. I would not want Paradox games that way though, would not feel right.

I loved this feature in CIV IV. (Dunno about CIV V having it)

Best part was it overcame Johan's fear by only wrapping into a globe at the very farthest distance.

(Remember, PI, we fans always know better!! ;) )

The only reason to use a globe in the game is to get rid of problems associated with map projections (and of course: It looks cool!) However this comes at a cost: How do you mod a map like that? Some of the best mods for EUIII and EUIV have changed the map, and they are much dbetter than the maps Paradox ships with their game. If Paradox were to start using globes instead of maps, would we be forced to use the vanilla map? If Paradox used maps with Victoria II quality it would be better, but the ability for modders to change the map to what they need is very important if you ask me.

"less overview"? Do you mean the right-side panel? Why would it affect that at all?
I think he means that on a flat map, like Paradox uses now, you can see more of the map at once.

Why would that be true at all? No one is suggesting an old school X-COM view where you always look at the whole globe and rotate it. Obviously should be able to zoom in close enough that the curvature of the globe extends beyond the edge of the screen.

Of course, but still will not be able to see more than about half the map, while you can See about 75 % when completely zoomed out in EUIV, but I don't see how this makes for bad gameplay. The only downside I can think of with the use of a globe is moddability.

The only problems i can come up with is sending ships around the world would be a but annoying to need rotating the globe around all the time. And the curvature would make it problematic to select and direct units on te curvature. the more to the edge the more difficult it would be to select units and direct them.
So you need to center your view more than on a flat map.

Yes, but you would usually play zoomed in close enough to not notice the curvedness of the map.

Yes i doubt it would be much of a problem. But would need the globe in front of me to test to verify. I could imagine that it could lead to be a nuisance.
The question is would be the coolness of a globe compensate for the ui problems.

A globe would be cool but i also think it would feel less immersive. I like the feel of a 2d map table where you shuffle your troops around.
