(in addition to the irony of seeing people complaining loudly on the Internet about lacking Internet connection....)

So, on those ''console games'' I keep hearing about (y'know, the ones into which, instead of killing hundred of thousands of ennemy soldiers over the course of a game, you kill a couple of hundreds in a more artisanal way...), it's apparently a huge deal to not be able to buy used games, sell used games, being unable to loan their games....

The introduction was sarcastic (I do play from time to time console games), but anyone else think that the console crowd might me a little behind the times ? I mean, Paradox (espically via STEAM) pretty much does the same as the X-One, and no one died over it....

I think part of it was because it was so sudden, people generally expect backwards compatibility and the ability to loan games to their friends. Suddenly they announced a ton of features over a short time that nearly everybody hated, think if Paradox required you to have an internet connection to play something like EU4, then they announced that you're required to buy the game to even view the game's forum.

EDIT: About the internet connection, think if that if your internet was down due to whatever problem, you can't play that singleplayer game.

Some games are best played on console others PC. For single player games I do not like to have to stay connected or have to connect everyday like the Microsoft seems to think I would. I play on a console maybe once a week if that. So the everyday requirement would be an inconvenience for me. I understand the piracy issue and much of it I am sad to say is self inflicted by the gaming community honestly how many people here have downloaded at least one pirated game, DVD or song. Probably everyone here weather they admit it or not is another matter. Then they wonder why game producers have to do some of the things they do for security. Game companies are in business to make money illegal downloads take that money out of their pockets. I understand some people don't want to spend up to 60 dollars on a new game(by gaming companies overcharging I do not mean Paradox their prices have always been reasonable) . So what don't steal it wait for the price to drop or catch it on sale. If people would do that then Microsoft and other gaming companies won't have to take "stupid" steps to stop you from stealing their games. Meanwhile I boycott many good games I wouldn't mind trying for X-box because of it.

Despite being unable to update my profil, I purchase a lot of Paradox games online, on STEAM, because they are pretty hard to find in stores in Canada.

I paid recently for EU IV preorder. I'm very happy with my purchase, but, still, I won't be able to loan the game and, well, I will need an internet connection for patches and download it, and I will never be able to resell it.

This is not killing me.

But you can also play offline or have a requirement to to connect everyday only when you feel like. I personally keep steam in offline mode most of the time. Many people are complaining because of the prices of new games 60 dollars or more. Many people buy the new games knowing they can trade it back in for a portion of the initial purchase price. Me personally it doesn't effect me but my son plays on consoles more then I do and he usually doesn't like to wait for prices to drop.

Paradox games are not very loanable in the first place. An average paradoxian will sink tens or hundreds of hours into each game usually (not to mention stime spent learning the game), while most console games involve less time investment and thus are more likely to be loaned out. You can play Call of Duty for a couple weeks and then loan it to a buddy, but a paradox game requires time and dedication to properly enjoy. (Plus you friend might get addicted and never give it back)

That's the main difference between Console and PC. People buy consoles so they'd be able to trade games and loan games to their friends. If that's gone the console format is useless. Then you could just play your games on PC. PC games are cheaper anyway.

Arent you able to do that though? The limits dont seem particularly bad. Being able to share games with 10 people without giving them a physical copy is really sweet. Its just a bunch of internet crybabies doing what they do best.

The 2nd hand market is detrimental to the gaming industry making great single player experience games in the same way as piracy is tbh.

Kaka på kaka. It didn't help an already worthless policy to further relinquish rights from the customer.

I haven't really played console games for years aside from a couple of exceptions, so I guess I'm kind of out of the loop when it comes to what a console gamer wants. That being said, at least I can use my PS3 to watch Netflix without paying for some additional online service. I don't really understand why the 360 forces that additional cost on you to use the Netflix service that you pay for, on a ISP that you pay for, on the console that you paid for. It's really weird that they perpetuated that with the Xbone especially since they've made such a big deal out of it being the media center of your dreams. That one issue makes the PS3 a better media server for me.

It's probably going to take a miracle to get me to buy any next-gen console since I can already just stream what I want on my PS3. Something would really have to grab my attention, and I don't know what it would have to be, but it's not going to be a doritos promotion or anything I have to pay a monthly fee for.

If i buy a bike i expect myself to be able to sell it once i don't need it anymore, if i buy a car i expect to be able to sell it once i don't need it anymore and if i do buy a game i expect myself to be able to sell it once i don't need it anymore. It doesn't make the game developer any money, but neighter does selling your BMW . If i buy a game it should be mine and i should be able to do what i want with it, including selling it

Well, y'know, in the past Paradox games have had very little DRM compared to console games. I could easily copy EU3 over on a flash drive and give it to my friend to try out. I'm sure pdox wouldn't much like this, but it's easy and doable and gives little issue. EU4 won't be able to do this, and even though you can do this for EU3/Vic2.. well, I don't think sales were hit too hard because of that. Or maybe that's why there's so much DLC because they were hit real hard because of that.

you know how economists think?... they see all the sick days people take when they are sick, or when they go on a one week holiday in a whole year of working, they see those days as lost money... they see your consumer rights as terror on their right to make more money...

Quite sure you only need steam to download EU4 and then you can use it as you want.

No if you had the right drivers installed you could copy and paste it, you could event run it off the USB stick :) this is how I found out about paradox from my brother and as you can see from my Icons I went on to buy all the expansions and more from that ~500Mb I could play V2 like this but now I'm saving up because I WANT to buy it and support paradox

I think he means to do the initial download.

Microsoft has announced it is removing the 24-hour-check-in and the restrictions on used games sales.

whoa O: maybe paradox should've told them their experience with the steam haters and that the LOUD internet community makes up a smaller percentage than they think. but hey, I'm glad we get freaking costumer rights. It may be better for the company if they didn't do this, but I'm so glad the obnoxious internet forced Microsoft's hand.

I don't believe the situations are comparable. The anti-Steam crowd on Paradox is really just random forum people. The anti-XBO crowd, however, included members of the gaming media. The Xbox One was getting hammered in the press, not just on the forums. I have to imagine there was also likely some pressure by retailers, who don't want to get a cut taken out of their used games sales.

In the United States on Amazon, the PS4 preorder was the #1 best seller, followed by the Xbox One. However, the PS4 also took the #3 (Watch_Dogs + PS4 bundle), #5 (Battlefield 4 + PS4 bundle), #6 (Launch Day Edition, which I think means guaranteed delivery on launch day), and #8 (Killzone + PS4). The PS4 controller was #9.

Since Microsoft's announcement, the numbers have shifted. The XBO is now #1, but 4 of the top 10 are still PS4s. The Launch Day edition dropped out of the top 10 (likely because its now unavailable).

I'm always torn about the konsole wars.
Kompetition is needed but a open battlefield would be better for the consumer. Rather than the closed off spaces they re now. It's naive of me but i wished the war would keep to machine spec's and pricing. And not drag developers and publishers into the fighting with exclusives.

But no exclusives will stay a pipe dream of mine. Atleast it looks like alot of the titels will come to PC. And the exclusion will be contained on the konsole aspect and the PC emerges as a neutral ground, where we all can meet and game together.
