Baron Wesly of Buntry
Lord of Buntry
Sworn to House Starborn

"Unyielding as Stone."

Brother,

What is this damnable appointment you have given me, to rule Swordstone in your stead? Cersei and I were looking forward to sitting on our arse's, eating and drinking like a Count and Countess! Leave it to you to vacate your seat when there is actual work to be done.

There has been flooding in Seabreeze. The mayor has sought audience himself and confesses incompetence, seeking Swordstone's aid in relieving the drowning city. He is a man worthy of the theatres of Calne. For all his dramatics, my men tell me the late rains have subsided and the damage minimal. Is it not a lord's responsibility to maintain his own keep, likewise a mayor of his city? This truth seemed lost on him as he was dragged away wailing about the children drowning in his streets. Wise of you to take Tybolt with you - your coffers would be empty to that fool.

Ser Timmoth of Westgate was attacked by bandits while hunting in the Downs. Marshal Wyce leads the investigation, and there is a consensus between him, myself and Timmoth that these were no mere highwaymen. One had a fat purse of gold on his person. With no other robberies reported, it seems they were paid well for the deed. Unfortunately Timmoth killed all men whom beset him, so we shall never know who may have been behind it. The dead men are unknown here in Swordstone and Marshal Wyce has left for Knifepoint to make some inquiries. Sons of bitches attacking a highborn. Enemies Timmoth made while in the capital, perhaps?

Meanwhile, Timmoth took a scrape while fighting the ruffians. His wound seems to have healed clean but he has taken to a fever. Sarah, ever the dutiful wife, looks after him. She had her misgivings at the outset of the marriage, I know, but she has grown into a good woman, and a good wife.

Take care in the capital and watch yourself among that lot. A den of vipers you have been thrown in.

~Wesly Buntry,
Baron of Buntry.

Letter to the Honorable Count Claude of Lazuli

Greetings, I hope this letter finds you in good health.

As you may have noticed I have yet to marry which is a bit uncharacteristic of a lord. Given my rather young age I haven't been focused on marriage too much, preferring instead to enjoy my youth and experience as a bachelor. However, recently I have come to the conclusion that it is time for me to settle down and start a family. I have come to fancy your daughter Marie and would be honored if you would allow me her hand in marriage so that we may join our two houses. I eagerly await your reply.

Count George Of Aksarben

Meet the Mayflwicks

A week after leaving Rollyford Marie, Nicolas, and Harrison finally arrive at the Ridge.

The Margrave’s carriage rolled through the countryside, more than a week outside of Rollyford, with purple snowcapped mountains rising in the east. Harrison and Marie sat on one side of the open carriage, his hand on her shoulder, while Nicolas sat on the other, alternating between plucking at the strings of his lute and writing in his journal. Harrison turned from the mountains to face Marie, smiling. "We have almost arrived. You will not be able to see it until we get very close... It is hidden in the mountains."

Maire nodded absentmindedly, a small laugh escaping her lips, still intent on taking in the view as their carriage moved along. "Not much of a capital, hidden away from view, is it? Your people should be able to look upon it with awe." She nudged him gently.

Harrison smirked and shrugged. "Well.. Hard to relocate a thousand year old castle, now is it? Besides... The view is magnificent... The town is brilliant, and we even have a lake all to ourselves, outfitted with a secluded forest just across the water... I'm sure you'll love flying your falcon out here." He nudged her back playfully.

Marie smiled at that. "And I'm sure that she will love the chance to hunt again. You know I haven't even seen her since I came to Hemritch? I hope that they're taking good care of her back in Lydes." She frowned a little as she turned to face him. "The lake sounds nice too, I've always enjoyed the water."

He caressed her hair gently. "I'm sure she's fine." He laughed. "And I would hope so! You've lived next to the sea your entire life... Ah... Wouldn't that be the life? Just me and you... On a boat with no rules, total freedom..." He sighed in bliss.

Nicolas raised an eyebrow at Harrison, looking up from his writings. "Would you like to become a pirate king then, with a pirate queen at your side? I'm sure that would make for an interesting song...”

Harrison snickered. "What would it be called..? A pirate king... Hmm..." He paused, suddenly appearing deep in thought, his hands tented in front of him. "I wonder what that would even entail…"

Marie's face scrunched up at the thought. "I assume a lack of bathing for one, as well as all sorts of criminal behaviors. That and scurvy." She shook her head adamantly, as if Harrison’s comment had been a serious suggestion. "Or drowning. None of which sounds particularly pleasant."

He looked to her and promptly nodded. "Oh yes, to be sure... A dangerous life, and one left unfulfilled." While he spoke the carriage tilted some as it began its journey up a mountain pass towards the capital.

Nicolas laughed, absently playing his lute again. "Oh, it wouldn't be all bad. You'd be able to go anywhere you please, you wouldn't be beholden to anyone, you could drink all day and have any woman you please. Not to mention that refreshing sea air. Oh, maybe the king’s navy will sink your ship and you'll die at sea, but I'd argue that just makes the story better, being willing to die for your freedom and all that."

Harrison smirked at Nicolas. "And why haven't you gone to make any of those stories fact? Or do you prefer to sit in the local pub and think of them, rather than doing them?"

"Oh, no I wouldn't do as a pirate, my skills lie elsewhere I fear. If only father had thought to patronize a pirate band." He shrugged, looking back down at his writings. "But you're a man of the sword, it's a life tailored for you. And, let us not forget, if I did go off and make them fact, there wouldn't be anyone to make a story of it."

Harrison looked from the pommel of his sword to Marie. "Well, I don't think we'll be leaving our lives behind for the sea just yet... Besides, we have a mighty collection of boats for the lake!" He laughed. "Perfect for relaxing in the water, with no one to bother you…"

Marie leaned back in the seat a little, looking up at the clouds. "It really does sound nice. Is the castle right on the lake, or just nearby?"

The wagon slowly made its way around a blind turn as they spoke to each other, inch by inch revealing a lush vale, and the capital of the duchy of Hemritch, just ahead. Bright white walls surrounded a small, welcoming town, with a large gate thrown open as people and carts passed through it. Just beyond was a castle unlike any other Marie had ever seen. It seemed as though it was built using hundreds of different architectural styles, all competing to stand out the most as she looked over the castles many towers. The lake sparkled as the light from the sun bounced off the water, making it appear like something from out of a fairytale.

Marie was stunned for a moment before laughing as she took in the view. "Oh, never mind then. It's a beautiful town Harrison, I can see why you and your family would choose to live and reign here rather than somewhere like Rollyford."

He smiled and nodded, as their carriage rolled into the gates, the people cheered and flew flowers at them as they saw Harrison, who waved and bowed, smiling. "The people are great folks... We also do seem to have a handful of new traders around across the clock… I would love to show you every piece this town has to offer." Several girls squealed as he blew a kiss to the crowd.

Marie smiled at the townspeople, waving a little and wondering if it was proper etiquette for her to do so. She leaned closer to Harrison, speaking barely above a whisper despite the loud cheering. "They're very...excited about your return. It's rather surprising to see them like this after the business in Rollyford." She nodded. "I'd like that though, seeing the town I mean."

"Yes... Rollyford always had some troubles, but I'm usually quite loved. I have been gone for quite some time." His hand slipped into hers. "It would be my pleasure…"

Marie eyed the mob of people as they hurried to keep pace with the carriage, wondering if they might try to enter the castle’s keep with them. As they rolled closer the castle she saw more and more knights who calmly controlled the crowd while the carriage moved into the courtyard. Some men, wearing the green and black of house Maylfwick bowed to Harrison as they made a familiar nod to him. He smiled back before turning to Marie. "Are you ready to meet father?"

She gulped a bit at that. She hadn’t expected to be nervous to meet the man, but given her discussions with Harrison she could only imagine how Duke Edwin would react to hearing about some of the activities she enjoyed. "I suppose I'm as ready as I'll ever be. You said not to mention how I attended university to him, right?"

"It would be best if you did not do so when Alysanne is near him, yes... If he asks however, do not lie. He has probably talked to your father by now anyways." They stopped near the stables, or at least that’s what she assumed the building was based on the smell, and Harrison helped her out of the carriage.

"Thank you." As Marie got her footing Nicolas shouldered his lute and jumped down. "I expect they have spoken, true. I'll keep that in mind then. Anything else I should avoid bringing up?"

"Perhaps keep out the parts of you hating me." He winked at her and they walked to the gates, the portcullis opening for them and the doors being pushed open.

"Welcome back Margrave." Another guard in black and green bowed, and as they entered the first hall a little girl stood waiting, an angry frown on her face.

Harrison's eyes lit up and went over to her. "Nico-"

The blonde girl kicked him in the shin and pouted, her nostrils flaring. "Y-you're late!"

He fell to his knee, and hugged her tight. "I'm sorry Nicole. Will you ever forgive me?"

She hugged him back, the anger mostly gone from her face. “Maybe…"

Nicolas stepped forward and preformed a sweeping bow towards Nicole, smiling as he spoke in his grandest stage voice. "Lady Nicole, while your cousin never called you by name I do believe I have heard of you, and your love of craftsman's hallways. Do go easy on poor Harrison, he tries so very hard." He winked conspiratorially to her as he said the last part while Marie covered her mouth, trying to stifle a laugh.

She blinked at the Nicolas, and blushed as she hit Harrison. "You told?!"

Harrison yelped lightly, causing Marie to laugh again, and put his hand on the mark. "Everyone in the entire castle knows!"

She but her lip, and stared at Nicolas, and then at Marie for a minute, before running off down a small corridor. Harrison shook his head. "Crazy girl..." He laughed and looked at them. "Welcome to my home. However we must move quickly. She's going to tell everyone." He slid past the first few doorways, on either side were five doors, the middle ones open-archs that simply viewed into the next room. And the end there was a double-crossed stairway, quiet a re-occurring theme in Hemritchian architecture. He slid into the arch on the left, going into a dining room.

"Hmm.. Father did some re-furnishing... No matter... I should know where his lodge is..." He left the dining room, leading them past several other finely decorated rooms, though Marie found herself preferring the decorations of Lydes. She began doubting that Harrison actually did know where the lodge was until they finally entered a tight passage several floors up from where they started. Harrison smiled at her, looking relieved. "We're almost there.. No one will bog us do-"

As he spoke a red-headed girl, with pale skin and light blush on her cheeks turned the corner. She was wearing a light blue dress, fitted with silver jewelry. Harrison yelped loudly and she smiled, walking up to them and bowing before hugging Harrison as he groaned in disgust. "You must be Marie Remache, daughter of Richard of Lydes... And you Nicolas, Baron of Numour?" She smiled. "It's a pleasure to meet you…" She blushed and looked down. "Everyone's looking for you, brother…"

Nicolas stepped forward and returned the bow before taking the girls hand and lightly kissing it. He smiled at her as he straightened back up. "The pleasure is all ours my lady. It's Nemour actually, though as I'd doubted anyone outside of Lydes knew the castle existed I must say I'm impressed. Am I correct in assuming that you must be Alysanne?"

Marie smiled to her as well, waving to her past their brothers. "Greetings, it is good to meet you as well."

She nodded. "Y-yes!" She looked up, excitedly. "I am Alysanne. And I have read all about your great family once father told me Harrison would be marrying you."

Harrison rolled his eyes. "Alysanne, don't get in my way, okay? Now, I must see father. If you wish to come, keep quiet." She nodded as he walked past her, and she fell in behind, staying promptly behind a little

Marie looked back and gave an apologetic smile to her, while Nicolas fell back a little as well, so as to walk beside her. "You know, I do my best to get in Harrison's way when given half a chance and am almost never quiet. It's worked out rather well for me these past weeks. You might consider trying it." He gave a short laugh.

She looked at him, seeming quite surprised. "Oh..." She giggled lightly. "B-brother knows best… He is so much like father, they strive for perfection." She sighed. "You've been traveling for weeks..? That must have been amazing… I've never even been that far out of the ridge..." Harrison picked a stairway, and led them up it.

Nicolas offered his arm to Alysanne to walk with her up the stairs. "Oh, it wasn't as impressive or entertaining as you might imagine, aside from the odd head of lettuce. There are far more impressive things than Hemritch from the window of a carriage, no offense intended of course. Perhaps, as soon to be relatives, I could show you some of those things someday."

She took his and blinked, giggling. "Oh that sounds like ext... Extraordinary fun!" She blushed as she fumbled with the word. "I... I don't know if father would allow it... I wish to go to the capital when King Edward is coronated though..."

Marie saw as Alysanne nearly slipped, her slipper falling down the stairs, causing Harrison to look down as well. "Still cause hell for the servants daily, eh sis?" He laughed, causing Alysanne to look down sadly.

Nicolas hurried to retrieve the slipper while Marie frowned at Harrison. She nearly whispered when she spoke. "Must you tease her? She rather clearly doesn't like it."

Nicolas returned the slipper to her with a smile. "Not unlike the story of Cinderella, eh? As coincidence would have it, I plan to return to the university after this wedding, perhaps I could escort you down to Calne to see the coronation. I'm sure your father will agree after I speak with him."

Harrison looked at Marie. "I have always teased her. She needs improvement if she wants to be a proper lady..." He walked up the stairs. Two giant chestnut wood doors stood down the hall, no other doors in sight.

Alysanne smiled and blushed. "Why a gentleman..." She nodded. "That would be oh so wonderful! If father agrees..."

Marie scoffed quietly. "Ah, yes, then she and Anne can have tea together, two proper ladies." She sighed and looked at the doors. She hadn’t meant to snap at him, but she failed to see why he would treat his sister that way. "Sorry, I, think I'm a touch nervous. Is that your father's throne room?"

He laughed. "He calls it his hunter's lodge." He grabbed her and kissed her forehead, causing her to squirm a little in surprise. "You'll be absolutely perfect..." He smiled, and turned before a frown appeared on his face, though Marie couldn’t tell why. He opened the doors slowly, revealing a man past his prime sitting in the desk chair.

He looked up, his eyes widening, his grey-brown beard contorting to his smile. "Harrison-Peters." Harrison shook his head and walked over to his father, embracing each other. He backed off and looked toward Marie.

Marie gave a small curtsy to the duke, smiling at him politely. "It is good to meet you Duke Edwin. My father speaks well of you."

She shifted, unsure how to continue while Nicolas bowed his head as well. "Well met, your grace."

After he ended his hug with Harrison, he looked to the two, nodding his head slightly. "I have spoken a great deal with Richard... You are Marie, yes?" He looked to Nicolas, pondering him. "Nicolas? Welcome into my home... You have gotten here fast, I trust Harrison got you out of meeting the families... For now?" He smiled.

Marie nodded quickly. "Yes your grace, Marie Remache, and my brother Nicolas, baron of Nemour. The families sir? We met your brother in Hyliton, and the mayor in Rollyford if that's what you mean, though we did move quickly, yes."

He shook his head. "Many of our relatives live in the castle.." He settled down into his soft leather chair. "And many are spread across the countryside... The Maylfwick family is one of legend, a legend that lives!" He laughed. "Now, why is it you are here?"

Harrison cleared his throat. "I have come to present my fiancée, lord father... And to make sure you approve of her."

He narrowed his eyes. "What is there to present?" Harrison stood still, fumbled as he thought.

Marie laughed, slightly uncomfortable and unsure how to respond, as well as annoyed at the idea of being subject to the duke’s approval. Nicolas chuckled, more clearly amused by the situation. "She could present her juggling skills, if you need give your approval of something. I should warn you that she's never juggled in her life though, so it might be a rather sorry display." Marie rolled her eyes at that but turned to see Edwin’s response.

He stroked his beard, which Marie noticed was not unlike his brother's, pin-pointed and focused, with some grey shaded in. He frowned and inter-locked his fingers. "Do you have any talent that might impress me, dear Marie?" He tilted his head, slightly bored.

She thought for a moment as she looked around the room, remembering what Harrison had called it. She figured that anyone who called their offices a lodge and mounted trophies would probably be interested in hunting. "Well, I'm rather adept at falconry, if I might say so myself. Is that something that would interest you your grace?"

His eyes flickered with surprise. "Falconry? That is not something you see every day a young lady is taught on... Usually just cripples, or old men." He winked and got up. "Did you bring your falcon with you?"

She shook her head, smiling at the fact that she caught him by surprise. "Not as of yet your grace, father suggested I keep her at Lydes until I asked your permission to bring her here."

He nodded and started walking up the stairs to the next level. "Follow me, then." Harrison quickly jumped to the request and followed right behind his father, replicating his movements. Alysanne walked the other way, heading towards a spiral staircase on the other side of the room.

"Of course your grace." Marie hurried behind Harrison while Nicolas went after Alysanne.

Edwin led them up three staircases until they were finally brought up to the top of the keep, the wind whipping around them. A white falcon flew down, landing onto the perch Edwin kept for him. "If you think are so adept, see if Azure here will follow your commands."

Marie stared at the bird for a moment, frowning slightly. For a moment she wondered if he actually practiced falconry himself, or at least understood the basics of it. One could hardly be expected to control an animal they had never spent time with. "Your grace, I haven't got my gauntlet with me, and I've only ever used my own falcon before..."

He took off his glove, and offered it to her. "You can use this. If however, you feel your skills are not that up to shape to handle a bird such as this, I suppose I will have to see you at dinner."

Marie slowly pulled the gauntlet on, giving an unsure look to Harrison. She wouldn’t sit back and have her skills called in to question. "Do you have any reward for it? I don't suspect it would listen to me for no reason."

Harrison kissed her forehead, again causing her to shift uncomfortably, and snatched some from his father's satchel before his slow movements could get it, giving the meat to her. "Be careful... Alright?"

She nodded before handing holding her hand out, up and away from the body. The falcon came quickly to her hand, spreading its wings to cover the glove as it ate the food. She motioned for it to fly back to the perch before ripping off another piece of meat. She looked towards Duke Edwin. "Your grace, would you be so kind as to stand between me and the perch, with your legs slightly apart?"

He nodded and did so, while Alysanne took to hiding behind Nicolas, clearly not liking the bird, and having been rejected by Harrison to hide behind him.

Marie laughed at that a little as she stepped back towards the edge of the roof and held her arm out again, causing the bird to fly off its perch, between Edwin’s legs, and on to her glove where she gave him the rest of the meat. She smiled confidently at Edwin, more than a little surprised that it had worked as she hoped. "I can do more with my own bird...but we've bonded some."

Duke Edwin smirked, nodding at Harrison in approval. "Impressive... That dang bird... Caught him in the mountains, and he hasn't shown me anything half as impressive as that." He swatted at it with his gloved hand causing Marie to frown. "Shoo! Get out of here!" It screeched at him and swooped down from the perch, likely to go hunt. "Harrison wrote to me that he absolutely loathed you, but, it seems that is not quite the case?" He laughed as Harrison blushed and shook his head at her, the duke already starting to descend to his office again.

“I hadn't thought it was the case, no." Marie frowned at Harrison before taking off the glove and following after Edwin. "Your gauntlet your grace. If I might be so bold when I first got my falcon I sat up with her for twenty-four hours. We were both tired, obviously perhaps, built I think it furthered our trust with each other a great deal."

He nodded, returning to his desk and going back to his work. Harrison took her arm and pulled her from the room as Duke Edwin began speaking to Alysanne, shaking his head. "He's lying! I love you, you know that..." He brought their bodies close.

Marie frowned and took a step back, away from his grip. "I believe you, now, I suppose. But he has no reason to lie either, and you were hardly fond of me at first, I recall Hyilton still." She looked at him questioningly. "What did you write to him?"

He blushed. "I was just asking for me to choose a different girl... I'm glad he refused." He smiled, only succeeding in annoying her more.

She scoffed. "Oh, is that it? You know I wouldn't have been so sad to have the marriage cancelled. It's not too late you know, you can still seek out a better lady than me, I'm sure there are plenty throughout the realm." She let out a huff, turning to look down the hallway. "You asked that of him before you even had a chance to know me." She looked back towards the room, her face reddening slightly, no longer necessarily angry at Harrison. "And why would he even say that? Does he mean to insult me?"

"He is just harsh, and blunt..." He caressed her cheek, shaking his head. "I would prefer none other... you are the one I seek, the one I love..." He frowned. "I should not have done that. It was foolish of me an-and..." He took his hand away. "You may slap me if you wish."

She frowned at that, shaking her head and wondering why he would even suggest it. "I would not hit you, we're not brute beasts, after all." She sighed, but her face was still slightly reddened with anger. "As I said, I do believe you...it was just rude of him to say anything, I knew how you felt, I didn't expect to hear it brought up again."

"I.. I will speak to him. He will not be allowed to just insult you whenever he wishes..." He smirked and nudged his nose against her neck, just below her chin. "Will you ever forgive me?"

She blushed a little, backing up again. "We'll be married soon enough, I trust you can contain yourself until that time. I do not need your maids and relatives judging me." She smiled a little. "But yes, I forgive you. You don't need to speak to your father though...I don't think he was being malicious towards me." More likely she thought he was just horrible at being diplomatic.

He nodded, backing up after giving her a light kiss on the cheek. "I think I can... The wedding shall be in a few days... Unless you wish for it to be sooner?"

Marie laughed. "No need to rush. You wouldn't want your future vassals to think that you throw a bad party, would you?"

He smirked, flipping his hair slightly. "Me? Never. Everyone will be talking about it! For it will be quite the event for some random knight, to marry the most beautiful maiden in the kingdom…"

Marie raised her hand to cover her mouth as she gasped in mock horror. "A random knight is it? Oh, my this is embarrassing. I was told you were the son of a duke, a margrave yourself. I'll have to fetch my brother and be off for Lydes. You understand, it would be unseemly to carry out such a marriage." She smirked at him as she spoke.

He flushed and laughed. "I did not know my lady-to-be was a jester, perhaps we should find a nice suit for you to wear at the wedding?" He gave her a similar look.

She shook her head, smiling. "You needn't worry about that, I've brought my own. Thank you though, you are most considerate."

He bowed, making a show of it. "Always my lady." He laughed and stood up, offering his arm for her. "It seems my sister and your brother have run off... Be true, will he touch her?" he frowned. "I would have to break his wrist if he does."

"I believe I recall him saying something about only if she touches him first, no?" She laughed quietly as she took his arm to calm him. "He certainly won't be pushing her up against a wall against her will if that's what you mean."

He laughed. "That girl wouldn't kiss a frog even if he was a true prince beneath. I doubt she would have the courage to even talk to that man, no offence, but he's quite the snake." He started walking them down the hall past an array of tapestries depicting the family’s history.

Marie laughed at that. "A snake? Nicolas? Never." She smirked a little. "I've hardly ever seen him lie other than in jest. You just don't like him because he jests despite your title. He does it with everyone really, it's nothing personal."

He shrugged. "He won't have to live with us, will he?" He smiled and nudged at her. "To have such a man as a brother... how are you not mad?"

"Who's to say that I'm not?" She looked at him curiously before she shook her head. "But no, he simply promised father he'd keep an eye on me until after the wedding."

He snickered. "I definitely don't think you're that mad..." He shrugged. "How sweet, a brother protecting his sister, are you going to go out and play princesses and knights later, or perhaps the dragon and the castle?"

She frowned at that. She’d never liked being treated as if she were a child. "Are you and your sister not close? Would you not watch over her in a strange new place, until she gets her bearings?" She coughed, blushing a little. "Would you not seek to protect her maidenhood until her wedding?" She rubbed her arm distractedly. "Under more normal circumstances I would not even have traveled with you, but with a legion of ladies-in-waiting and maids and the like. You should be thankful my brother was willing to fill their place."

He thought about it for a moment. "Any man would feel my steel before he felt my sister's skin." He rolled his eyes at her. "And you think I was the one showing off at Hyilton..." He snickered "That perhaps may still be true... I did want my new wife to think I had lots of power, and much respect."

She shrugged. "I didn't mean to say it as if I were so important to warrant all the fuss, only that that is the way things are usually done. Women need to be looked after you know." She ran a hand through her hair, fixing the loose strands that had fallen out of place. "Still, I think your title and family does a good job of conveying those for you, you don't need a small army to follow you everywhere."

He frowned. "You think so? What if I found myself in a scuffle with bandits?" He thought on the subject. "Would you not like to be so.. ah... protected?" He touched her hair gently, smiling and sniffing it slightly, before moving away and trying to not make a big deal of it.

“That was…odd.” She tilted her head to the side before laughing a little. "There are only fifty knights in the whole of Lydes you know? But then I've never had food thrown at me there either, so maybe you require more here...to deal with that type of thing. Perhaps you're right."

"I don't know. We have always had a strong military tradition. Knights are famed throughout Hemritch, they are a common thing... I know maybe three hundred coat of arms… and that’s maybe less than a third that are in Hemritch, not counting our bigger vassals..." He kissed her cheek. "We come from two very different places."

Marie nodded in agreement. "Clearly. I can't say I would care to memorize something so dull...no offense of course. I'll take knowing a few of the merchant and banking families over hundreds of knights any day."

He laughed. "Merchants must be OH so much more exciting! With their coins and coppers. You know, keeping an well balanced income is not that hard. I could show you sometime." He frowned. "I... I dislike many of our policies however."

Marie smirked and rolled her eyes. "I started doing bookkeeping for my father when I was thirteen, a way to keep me out of trouble I believe. But Perhaps I could show you how to keep a balanced income instead? Maybe make it so that the people of Rollyford don't chafe under harsh taxes while half of the docks at Hyilton sit empty?"

He laughed. "You think I have control, don't you? Nay, my father parades me for my military skill, and even then… It has its limits." He shook his head. "Even if you could show me a thing or two I didn't know, it would not change anything."

She raised an eyebrow at that. "You got the mayor to lower taxes and consider festivals, as well as other things, in Rollyford, didn't you? Your power is more subtle than simply making a declaration, but your words still carries weight, if applied to the right people you could have tremendous influence in how things are done."

He blinked, looking uncertain. "R-really? I just did what you told me to... Well I mean… I did what you would do." He thought on it. "I guess I just considered my fame in people simply cheering my name…"

She shrugged a little, looking down at her feet. "Well...I hope that you at least believed that my thoughts were truly for the best then, rather than simply trying to impress me." She looked up at him and shook her head seriously. "You can make things better, if you try, that's all I mean, you don't need to be the duke to help your people."

He felt the pommel of his sword nervously. "True. I am a knight." He blinked at her. "I didn't do it to impress you.. at least I don't think.. I just did it because I believed it was right.. but it was true I got the idea from you."

She laughed, warm and happy. "Then I am glad I could be of service to you."

He nodded. "Always."

Year 1462, January to June

The first two trials in the reign of King Edward had been completed, much to the content of the realm, even if less to the content of His Majesty even though he was not willing to admit it for the sake of appearance, the judges appointed was His Grace, Mathias Steelbeard. Lord Louis Orleans, Lord Luke Somme-Chevalier, Lord ClaudeSomme-Chevalier D'Manche and Lord Sumner. The first trial had been that of Duke Magnas who had been accused by the realm due to his actions at the wedding between his daughter and the second son of Duke Michael. The wedding which was expected to have secured the two houses together in the civil war had done anything but that, during the trial it had come out that not only did Duke Magnas attempt to capture him, some claim to kill him as well, but had also attempted to poison him.

In the end, the verdict was read out by Lord Louis Orléans, the verdict being the execution of Duke Magnus, the loss of his duchy title as well as a total payment of 2000 sovereigns to be paid to the King and Duke Michael with half of it going to each.

The next trial and the one which would prove to be the most difficult was that of Duke Michael, it was to be decided if he was in fact a traitor to the realm as he was accused of, or if he was innocent of the accusations. The debate quickly heated up as the questions were asked and it didn’t take long before clear loyalties showed in the judges. Lord Sumner even announced that he would share the punishment which had been placed Duke Michael, to the great annoyance and anger of the King, even make Edward stand up and speak during the trial.

As the trial went on the judges were unable to come to a clear agreement, while it did become clear that Duke Michael would not be punished for High Treason, the majority of the judges did however agree that he should be punished for minor crimes, if for nothing else than to satisfy the king and the realm, together with sending a message that rebellion was not tolerated.

As such in the end a verdict was read out by the judges that the Duke was to join the church which he did as well as pay 2000 sovereigns to the King as compensation.

Back at court, the mood is much lighter with great evenings, balls, feasts and dancing to keep the courtiers active. And no one was more active than the two ladies in the court, Amalia and Annette, much to the pleasure of the young noble men to look at and much less to the pleasure of the Kings advisers to have to pick between. One of the large issues where some prearranged deal that the King apparently, or at least be claimed to have made to the Count of Carillion before the rebellion, whereas it might be wiser now to break that word and marry the daughter of the new Duke of Edelwick.

Rumours however quickly started to spread among the court that one of the women had already begun sleeping with the King, naturally both of them denied it and so did the King, but it lit the imagination of many in the court and quickly became a known topic during dinners. Perhaps under these circumstances it wasn’t that strange that when His Grace, Loudamere, The new Duke of the Shield arrived in the capital there wasn’t much notice taken of him. Both the families of Amalia and Annette had arrived in hopes of swaying the advisers and power men in Calne to their side of the issue.

The lack of notice that Loudamere however received from either of them not to mention many others proved to be an error in hindsight. As all advisers as well as the King was busy dealing with this issue and others of the realm, it left them all with little time to the lower nobility which was something that Loudamere would capitalize on. He started spending many hours of the day in conversation, playing sports or cards together with lower nobility to form connections, and more importantly it was something that he managed to do extremely well.

It wasn’t until months after his arrival that it became clear to the two families how much power that Loudamere had been able to gather, with Loudamere also starting to gather influence in the higher up nobility it was obvious that he could be of vital importance to secure the marriage with the King.

As the months went by, the Duchess of Cowen becoming heavier and heavier with child, clearly showing the gift from above in her belly, much to the joy of her husband, as the year went on and the month reached the middle of May, the Duchess finally went into labor. Duke Alistair had made sure there would be plenty of midwives to help, even physicians should they come in need. As the hours went on, it became clear that it wasn’t going to be easy, after 28 hours the Duchess was still in labor, the head physician started making plans to cut open her belly to be able to get the child out, but that would most likely leave the Duchess dead.

However as another three hours passed, the Duchess finally gave birth to a healthy son, but leaving her in a bad state of health to say the least. She soon became ill and has seen been sick but as of late she started to recover and it won’t take long before she is healthy once again.

The Duke of Cowen, as a gift to his wife bought her a Trivian Horse, to congratulate on her the birth of their son, and her survival. The horse, bought up from Lazuli, one belonging to the first generation of the breeding of count Claude. The Duchess being so happy about the gift, thanking her husband, and Alistair being so taken by the horse and its grace, decides to start breeding horses himself.

However, unlike Count Claude in the south, Duke Alistair decided not to breed the Trivian Horse, despite his wife’s happiness for it. Instead he decided to breed the Aruthian war horse, together with the Pivar breed, the Pivar breed being used by lightly armoured cavalry, usually for scouting to secure the region before the main army advances.

In the western part of Pilarch, Luke Somme-Chevalier, the newly appointed count of the region decides to build a large lumber mill to increase the production of and export of lumber. In the city of Pilarch, it is shown that while it being a simple project, it is one that has great support, to such a degree that even forms a merchant’s guild within the province. As such as the lumber mill picks up in production, the guild decides to store half of the production in their stock to be able to sell them later on to different lords needing it.

At the same time, the count orders the construction of fabric mills, the local gentry unlike in Artageth happily accepts the grant from the count to build the mills. It however doesn’t take long before problems start to arise as it becomes clear that it would not be the counts themselves who would profit from these mills. When the mills where constructed, the count, who rightly owned them handed them over to local merchants who would be better at managing them than the gentry. When the gentry found out it turned them from supportive to outraged, as they had not been paid for the construction of the mill, but actually paid for their land without their knowledge to simply be bargained off to lesser men. The gentry set their own men to hunt down the merchants, chaos quickly set in for everyone who lived nearby.

Soldiers loyal to the Gentry, killing the local mill owners

The gentry would simply not accept what they felt was a betrayal of their trust and as such there was shown no mercy, for while they couldn’t get to the count, they could to the common merchants, in the end many of the merchant families had either been captured or killed by the local gentry and they had torn down the majority of the mills. Some of the mills still stood under the counts, those merchants that accepted the purchase of their mills by the local gentry stayed alive, but now had lost most of their fortunes and as such many began to go hungry to bed.

The Starborns decide to trade goods with the Islanders across the sea, from the Grimlock Isles come ships filled with mostly iron, nicely fulfilling Daggerfalls need for it. The ships from Daggerfall however carry more common items, common in the realm, though very much needed in the Shield, clothes, tools, dyes and food all being on big demand on the Isles. Altogether this has greatly increased the income in both areas, the traders also making a small fortune for themselves. Of course the newly built harbors in Zaan and Grimlock had also greatly helped with this, the increased capacity for ships and great managing of the port had helped.
(+400 income to the County of Daggerfall and Duke Loudamere of the Shield)

With the iron steadily flowing from the Grimlock Isles to Daggerfall, Lord Sumner decided quickly to put it to good use. The stewards invested in the expansion of smelters and forges around Swordstone, Buntry and Holme. Luckily for Lord Sumner the stewards had found mostly competent smiths, leading to quick production and product output as well as these smiths finally getting back to their jobs again, after the lack of iron in Daggerfall having made a lot of them previously jobless. Even though most of the smiths were feeling once again confident there had been a big fire in one of the forges in Buntry, leading to the death of a few commoners and leaving half the forge in ruins.

The Count of Artageth orders the construction of a new port in his province, however already at the beginning it turns out to be a bad investment. At first he orders the wood needed for the port, as well as the labor which is needed to build it, but as they show up, it becomes clear that while he had the wood, and the workers, none of them actually managed to achieve anything. The workers being so happy to finally be rid of their wives, spend the better time of their stay in a whorehouse, and if not there, then out getting drunk.

The count was furious, to say the least, he ordered all of them fired and punished for breaking the contract which was between the count and workers. Eventually an agreement was reached where the workers would pay back the money they had already gotten, as they did they were then allowed to leave the county, and they did. However some jesters say that laughter could be heard all the way out of Artageth, this in part because that when the count realized that he had gotten his money back, he also found out that the workers had gathered up quite a large bill in the city, which now was unpaid. The count had to make a choice and decided to let them starve, while this might have been the best wish for the treasury, it was not with the whores.

As such the whores began to work overtime, to say the least, which left the city in a, well not pleasant environment. The whores began to work more openly, also in the middle of the day, in dire need to gather money, as such they slept with clients they wouldn’t otherwise sleep with, and for a lower payment than otherwise. Leading to much larger sexual activity in the region, one of the biggest problems however came when some whores, perhaps more dire for money than others, starting sleeping with young men of lower than acceptable age in the rest of the kingdom.

One of the bigger problems however arose when the local gentry members, especially their sons started to be targeted, as often happens with young boys, wanting to relief stress, but more importantly than that, being pressured by their peers. As such it many of their fathers demanded that the count put an end to it, demanding a ban and punishment against the whores, after the whores themselves started coming to the nobles, demanding money for the young lords offspring.

As the count banned it, which probably the wisest move perhaps not in the short term but diffidently in the long one. A few nobles still had to pay for the bastard offspring of their children, but at least a stop had been put to it. At the end of the year, a few whores had indeed died, but the main death was among infants, many whom where just left in the street to die after their birth.

The Count, quickly wishing to move on to a more happy subject, announces that he will expand the textile of the region and as such build new textile mills which runs with the rivers. Over the course of the next few months, a few are set up, the issue is that many of the areas which are needed for the construction of the mills are owned by the local gentry. While some are happy to help, some of the local gentry are not happy with the count after the incident with the whores and as such they simply refuse to build the mills on their land, even though the count was willing to pay for it. As such at the end of the first half of the year, it had improved by a slight bit, but nowhere near of which the count had hoped it would do.

After the besieging of Temeria by the armies of the Comte of Lydes and the Count of Carillion the land had been trampled and ruined nearly everywhere, worst of all were the main roads leading to the other provinces and Vizyma and Blackstone. This led to Baron Simon of Blackstone, as regent of Temeria, to decide paving the roads was in order. Though at first it was a struggle finding the proper workforce to do this, as most of the locals had worked overtime on farming, as some of their lands had been razed by the siegers. Though slowly but surely enough commoners were gathered to do the task. It had taken them a while to pave most of the roads, though there is still roads lacking pavement the parts they had done looked incredible.

Another point the Baron had come to was to increase the income in the region. After lots of debating with the locals they had mentioned the untouched plains bordering Eisenwier, these lands hadn't been touched for decades, even though these plains had always been rather fertile. The Baron decided to gather some lords who might be interested to buy these lands for some possible farming possibities. One of the lords was very interested, far outbidding the other lords, he was one of the more wealthy lords in Temeria and already had small farming communities planted everywhere.

As it happens to be this lord also was the one who mentioned to the Baron to have these lands sold in the first place, it mattered not however, as the taxes he promised to pay just wouldn't be able to be rejected.

Disaster however struck in the later months as one of the shafts in the gold mine in Temeria collapsed, burying many alive.

Count Louis of Carillion orders the construction of a new building in the middle of his city, the building is a grand structure, and yet simple in design, many wonder what the design is for and it doesn’t take long before it is announced to be a bank, it being based largely off the Rivaran Banking system, which used double-entry bookkeeping and had as of late come in a dire situation. Another grant of 1500 sovereigns where granted to the bank, and while it officially was headed by a local family, it was in reality run by the Count. In the opening months, as expected by a bank, it doesn’t turn a large profit, instead mainly borrowing out the money which had been granted by the count, the income however started to come in during the later months as the interests start being paid by the people borrowing.

Carillion is however a limited market andthe count does however have a plan to overcome this issue with, to do this he expands the bank to the nearby region, what he however didn’t expect was the unwillingness of the local rulers and mayors to allow such a thing. With them worried that the Count of Carillion would hold economic power over them and their province and thus hold the real power in the city. As such many of the banks were ordered to be closed by the local mayors, much to the dismay of the count, as his banks where closed down he ended up spending a great deal of money setting it up for nothing and as such while the bank turned out to be a success, the banking in the nearby regions turned into a failure.

As the Comte of Lydes left, travelling to Calne first to court the new King, and afterwards onwards towards Cowen to visit his daughter and son in law, he left the reigns of Lydes in the hands of his son, the Vicomte. The Vicomte set about collecting the taxes needed for the coming months, and as he did he also started spending them.

Capitalizing on the events happening in the Trivian states, and the desperate need for money and soldiers to fight the Emperor, which they need if they ever hope not to pay the Emperor. As such the Vicomte went to work to secure the funds which they needed to hire an army and fight back, in return he was able to gather wealthy trade routes and trade arrangements with many of city states. The Vicomte was even able to gain the sole trade rights to Mivian from multiple of the states.

With the trade rights now secured, the Vicomte set to improve the port of Lydes to accommodate for the new ships which soon be arriving to the port. At the end of the first few months it became clear that Lydes had vastly improved its wealth, largely at the cost of others such as Hemritch which was now no longer the main trading point into Mivian for the Trivian city states.

Many now began to see Lydes as the trading capital of the North, outdone by none but the Capital. Together with the increased wealth, the population also followed which caused a large migration to be seen arriving in Lydes to conduct trade, mainly traders who previously was in the region of Hemritch who now lost many contracts.

As a grand party was underway in the duchy of Edelwick, it started to get out of control by the third day as more and more of the participants feasted away. With Count Claude showing off his new horses in a race to spread the names of his horse around and show their powers to the nobles. The Duke of Edelwick himself had a ship built for the occasion, a grand and glorious ship to show off his wealth, and perhaps to cover up the failure of the previous year.

As such when the Duke set out with his family, with a large group of nobles and the whole city watching it left everyone with a feeling of grandeur. However as the day went on, the members on the boat, as well as the crew and the helmsman became to get more and more drunk, so when nightfall went on there was not a single sober person left. As they headed back to harbor, the helmsman set them off course and as such they instead headed to a nearby cliffside, known for its dangerous rocks. As they went closer and closer, they eventually hit one of them, making the ship take in water unknown to many of the guests. But as they started to realize what was happening, the guests panicked and tried to flee all to go into the cold water below, back on land people heard the screams, but all thought that the party was just in full swing, it wasn’t until the morning after that it became clear what had happened.

Two weeks after the funeral of the Duke and his family, count Claude was summoned to Calne by the king, there he was proclaimed the new Duke of Edelwick as well as Lord of Edelwick itself.

One thousands foot knights and two hundred mounted knights where inaugurated in the county of Hemritch, while the Duke had arms and armour for some, it didn’t mean that he had for all, not to mention the long training that would be needed as well as the upkeep for it. The ceremony in Maylfwick Ridge was however a grand thing with great splendor despite the small wealth of the duchy.

To help pay for some of the expenses, as well as with their new knightly titles, the newly knighted young men were given land in the county of Hemritch. It greatly helped to secure that more would be able to pay for their own arms and armor, as well as ensuring their loyalties towards Hemritch in the case of battle. It did however also mean that due to the laws, the Duke was no longer able to tax said regions and as such loss a relatively large source of income from the lands.

Even though tensions were rising in the duchy of Hemritch, Prince Louis of Mont Blanc had decided to visit the Count of Pilarch, Luke Somme-Chevalier. However, much to the dislike of the locals, he had taken a Kekist monk with him along for the trip. Whilst traveling toward Pilarch most people didn't pay the monk too much mind, probably trying to ignore him or elsewise being too busy. The Prince managed to get to the newfound count in good health, however Count Luke was quite confused at the sight of the monk but just like most people he tried ignoring him and the Prince and Count conversed without a bother, talking about the state of the realm, the rebellions and the count's new position within this realm. The Prince was offered to spend a few days in Pilarch to regain energy for the long trip back home and decided it was for the best he would. This however turned out bad, the monk, in the time the Prince had spent in Pilarch had managed to start a small cult in Pilarch, very much to the dislike of most of the other commoners and the gentry of Pilarch, it was however not until the group had killed a family whom they thought unworthy. They set their house afire, leading to the flame burning down several buildings as well as crops. This led to the gentry leading a small group of knights to stop this nonsense, leading to the death of the Kekist monk and his followers.

Back in Mont Blanc after nearly another six months of building the cannon foundry in Fleurs it had finally been finished, a lot of things had gone wrong during the building of it, delaying it time after time after time, leading to countless people being sacked as well, and even after all that the foundry still has few problems, the biggest problem being the inexperienced workforce. The first cannon that had been made was more a piece of art than a functional cannon, leaving it useless and even more workers sacked. The wish is for more cannons to be produced in the future of course, so there is still a big search for the right people for the job.

In Caillaux the situation became more and more dire, as the forces of Hayden moved ever close it became clear that the Bishops time was up and that his hold on power in the region was crumbling at a rapid rate. Many of the minor priests around the communities, previously loyal to the Bishop had now switched sides to Hayden and written to the Patriarch already declaring that Hayden was the rightful count and that the Bishop had ruined the ways of the church.

As Hayden ever moved closer to Bishops city then the city itself turned into a bigger and bigger panic and as such thieving became rampant. As the siege began it only became worse, many people were afraid and demanded that the Bishop surrender himself and stop the suffering his has caused, the Bishop himself however decided to burn them as heretics. Perhaps then it wasn’t so unexpected that something eventually would happen to end the starvation in the city. On the morning of May the fifth a group of ten clergy members and fifty infantry men gained access to the church in which was the Bishop was located, they officially forced the guards of the Bishop to surrender, but in reality the guards where as sick of the Bishop as the rest and as such surrendered without issue when they were ordered. When they gained access to the Bishop himself it didn’t take long before they plunged their blades through his chest and thus ending his reign. At the same time, the gates where being battered down by Hayden whose men then rushed in while killing the defenders.

1rTeN89.jpg

The fall of Caillaux

As the news of the death of the Bishop was announced the defenders surrendered and Hayden took the city.

As Hayden was declared the Count of Caillaux, people prayed that their troubles would finally come to an end and for a short while they did. It didn’t take long before the Duke of Hemritch had sent an army led by his son and heir up north to deal with the so called rebellion, either by sheer folly or to assert their domination over the land the young general continued. Hayden himself now being seen as a hero by the local people for ending the prosecution of the Bishop and bringing peace, had no desire to let their new beloved count simply be pray for a Duke who did nothing to help them in their time of need, and as such Hayden was able to call on a larger army than before, and even equip them due to the help he received during the rebellion as well as the garrisons of the Bishop.

When the two armies finally met, they both offered their terms, Hayden wanting the Duke of acknowledge him as the Count of Caillaux as well as grant a pardon to every person in the county. The young Harrison however had other ideas, if he accepted these terms he knew that he would be weakening the power of the Duke, for if it could be dictated to him who shall own land in his father’s duchy then he had no power to decide anything.

In the end no terms could be reached between the two parties and as such battle formations where made. Harrison being ever the idealist had given the order that they would fight in the chivalric code and act accordingly, many knew that once a battle had started it would be simple chaos, he had also ordered that the noblemen would be captured and spared, while he might wish to fight like in the tales of old then his officers would likely not. Hayden on the other side however knew that he was not dealing with knights, but largely peasants some who had become quite hardened by the last year of constant fighting.

As the signal for battle was given the two armies charged for one another, it was utter carnage and chaos, with both Harrison and Hayden losing control of their armies, the only thing saving the two sides from cutting down their own men was the crest which they carried on their chest. Eventually both Harrison and Hayden joined the fray to try and regain control of the battlefield. Some might call it faith where as others might call it luck that the two eventually met on the battlefield, as they both realized it quickly became clear that Harrison hoped to prove himself, having shown great progress earlier in the month against his trainers.

The fighting went back and forth and both of them fourth bravely, however in the end the Hayden was able to hit Harrison just below the eye on his right cheek, leaving a large scar and permanent mark. As Harrison stumbled backwards from the blow and Hayden also disengaged it became clear as both generals looked around the battlefield that neither of them would claim victory that day.

With the stripping of the Duchy, the count of Ravens hall has to pay the fine which has been issued to him by the court. As such to be able to afford it they stop hiring any new soldiers, after a few months the payment arrived in Calne, and the debt was paid.

Furthermore the new count also decided to increase the textile production in the county and as such ordered many new mills. Luckily for the new count, and regent, the order quickly turns successful and many mills are built in the county, even at a lower price than otherwise expected for such a large order and it’s a great boom for the economy, despite this many are still advising the count to lower his expenditures as they are costing him a large fortune.

The Bishop of Mellions continues to write to the cardinals during the coming months, assuring them that he would do everything that is in his powers to help them against the Emperor. Many of the Cardinals doubted him and even laughed or wish he would go away, not all where enemies of the Emperor and where quite happy with his invasion of Trivia, they saw it as an opportunity, one which they didn’t simply want to pass.

The Patriarch however was thrilled by the promise, and despite the Bishop not promising it, or most likely being able to deliver it, expected that aid from the Kingdom of Mivian against the Emperor would soon arrive.

Response being written to the Bishop of Mellions

As such the Bishop set to work in Calne, gathering the support of the local gentry and nobility to make sure that he would be able to live up to the expectations that the patriarch now held.

The Bishop spend large amounts of time preaching both in the churches, and in private to nobles to convince them to help him in his cause. At the end of the months, he had been able to gather a great amount of support amongst the people, as well as some within the nobility, however many still wondered if this was the right cause to take, most of all within the nobility, where several of them had good trade connections in the Empire, the common people on the other hand was outraged by the actions of the Emperor.

As he returned to the previous Duchy of Ravens Hall, he spoke with many nobles back on the way to Mellions, attempting to establish himself as the new power in the region now that the previous Duke was no more. His attempts was met with varied success but he was able to gain headway none the less, largely due to his actions in the capital earlier in the year, as such he was able to set himself up as a large political power in the region, both temporal as well as spiritual.

The Count of Aksarben began the year with announcing that the University of the Aksarben would be constructed, for this project he hired architects from the Empire to draw it for him as well as started gathering the materials. However when the architects showed up and the building began, the engineers quickly became concerned that as they built, the site which had been cleared would not be able to support such a massive building as this would become.

They had to act if they ever wished to build a university here, they then began to level the earth and strengthening the ground, using many of their resources in the process to make sure that it was done correctly, making it a very expensive affair to secure this. As the months passed it became clear that no real work would be made on the university itself, instead the foundations stood ready after the six months, and a lot of expenses.

The counts other project went much better, having ordered the expansion of the port, to fulfill this the count had many new storehouses opened up to allow more merchants to use the city as a trading as well as storage hub. The overall trade in the port increased to a large degree, this was largely due to many merchants buying storage space to be able to trade in Lydes. As Lydes itself was not yet ready to support the massive amount of new trade that the city now held, others needed to take off some of the load and as such Aksarben profited greatly from it.

Several blacksmith shops are opened up in the county of Calderian during the year, many of them are high making armours from Trivia, having come to Calderia due to the war raging in the North. Many of them where highly skilled and some of the best in the known world for making stylish armor, while granted that it wasn’t all that useful on the battlefield, it was a proud piece of art of any jouster that would take part in any tourney.

XU92M0k.jpg

Trivian tourney armor
As such when many of the shops where built and ready to be put into work, they were already occupied, that did however create a problem for the local blacksmiths as they were soon outdone by the much more qualified Trivian smiths leaving them with a problem.

Some of those blacksmiths tried to change their trade and as such went into jewelry making, however it was not something that was cheap to attempt, leaving many of them broke. Those that however did manage to survive the change needed a new market, one that was not easily found among the commoners. They prepared for over a month, their craft and their skill, making many jewels in the process for them to show off at the coming wedding.

It had been announced that the heir to Calderia himself was to be married to Colette, the daughter of the newly appointed Duke of Edelwick, the wedding was to be a grand affair, bringing many nobles, as well as possible patrons to support the new jewel makers, it was a chance which they would not pass up to profit from. As the wedding came about, many nobles had turned up, both from the Duchy of Edelwick and from the Duchy of Calderia.

The jewelers had given many trinkets away to wealthy nobles, and notably to the bride to show off to the entire gentry for the wedding. After the two Dukes, the jewelers had also had great interest in showing off to the Count of Lower Plait, having a gold mine many wanted his support as it could be more constantly assured. However as the bride walked down the church, much to the jewelers dismay, it wasn’t the trinkets which was spoken about, but rather her own beauty.

While this marriage would secure the alliance between the two duchies as well as the two houses, many wondered about the idea and legality of the marriage, some of Calderia’s advisors even saying they would need the Patriarch to make a dispensation for the marriage to be allowed. Edmund, the young husband to be, had recently made himself known to the Kingdom not only as the heir to Calderia but also as the man who captured the Duke of Temeria after the betrayal of Duke Blackgate. The bride, Colette, was however not without a reputation herself, Duke Claude’s parties being a known thing, as well as multiple of his children. Colette however was more known than many of the others, perhaps due to the favor she carried with her father. Colette being known as a great party goer, like the rest of her family, she however didn’t only go to parties as she like many other nobles also went to tourneys, to watch the knights’ joust, often together with her friends sending the knights kisses from afar. As often happened with Claude, a party was held afterwards, with the knights and young ladies alike not to mention a whole palace of other people, this did however have consequences as the young Colette and it was widely doubted that she was still a virgin by the time of her marriage. This was perhaps all the more reason that the new Duke of Edelwick wished to marry her off, to both secure his position as well as the reputation and integrity of his family and their titles.

The wedding went on and while drinks where at large and free, many decided to hold back due to the closeness of the river Plait and the fate of the late Duke of Edelwick, as such it was a rather sober party despite what had been expected. None the less it had been a beautiful wedding and the Duchy of Calderia finally had a new member to its family.
(+300 income to the Duke of Calderia, -1400 to the treasury. Edmund Steelbeard has been married to Colette)

As the wedding in Calderia ends, the count of Lower Plait travels east towards the Aruthian Empire. There he hopes to conduct diplomacy as well as securing trade deals between himself and the Empire, together with him he had his oldest son Corentin. As they travelled they were able to meet many small local towns until they eventually came further and met with the Duke of Gold’s Field, and as desired they began to discuss trade, however on Duke Louis mind was something much else than trade, something which he saw as far more important which was the rising tensions between the two realms. Duke Louis wanted a way to ease them and return back to a more cordial state which existed before the war, the issue was however that both knew that neither of them could make sure that it would happen simply by them talking.

As such they estranged gifts with one another and agreed to meet at a later point to discuss this issue. However as the Bishop of Mellions was busy in Calne to make sure that the local people rose up against the Imperials it only made Duke Louis all the more worried, and as such he invited Count David back quickly. As such when they met at again, Duke Louis proposed that if Count David acted in the interest of peace and prosperity between the two realms, then Count David would also receive an annual pension of 800 sovereigns.
(-700 to the treasury of Lower Plait, a choice for the count)

Next set of orders are due the 9th.

The Black Gates hold no justice

As I sit alone within my room at night, the candles flicker as I was reading my favorite book. In the books pages contained a hero, and that hero was known to be a devilish schemer and ironically a man who wanted only to protect the realm. He resembles my father in that fashion, though I never really spent any attention to the politics I was just told to use a sword and defend the family one day. My brother was the one whom had that field covered he was the heir it was expected of him, though everyone always gave my brother more attention than they did me. I would say I hated him for that, I hated that I was just a shadowy figure in the background while my brother got all the credit. But now I can only think about how much I miss him. The castle feels lonely and depressing after that night, I lost my brother and my sister, I do not blame my father for their deaths as it is to be expected results from a plot performed by our family. But it doesn't mean we do not feel any pain after they are lost to us, and on that note I have yet to receive any news of my fathers sentence by the King. My uncle tells me that everything will be ok, but some how I knew he was lying to me as his face proved otherwise.

As the next day arrived I continued to rule in stead while my father was away, with my uncle as acting regent I did what he said was best for the benefit of Ravens Hall and improved the county. This was also the day we would hear the verdict of my fathers trial, though as I sat on the throne of Ravens Hall I just sank my nails into the armchair of the seat. It was about three hours that we had to wait, as the messenger from the capital arrived my uncle quickly grabbed the letter and opened it up. The amount of stress that he was going through looked unbearable, I only looked at him for only a minute and it seemed his reaction was anything but joyful. He slowly gave me the letter and quietly walked away towards the hallway though a yell of sorrow followed afterwards, despite the fear I felt from the letter I opened it up and read the dreadful words. My father was sentenced to death for crimes against the crown, no words could escape my mouth as I was shocked and stunned for the lack of justice brought before the new King.

I ran..I ran I ran and I ran away from the throne room, until I made it back to my room. I grabbed my sword and grabbed my armor, and equipped them to my person. As tears fell down my face, I couldn't stop thinking of revenge and how I wanted to kill the King and Guerrin family. As I opened my door my uncle appeared I tried to go through him but he wouldn't move, I tried to push him out of the way countless times but the effort was for not as he wouldn't budge an inch. I gave up and slid to floor as I bang his chest with my fist wailing in agony as I wanted my family back. My uncle gave me a hug and told me these words that I wouldn't dare forget for as long as I live.

"Do not cry! If the world has chosen to neglect proper justice then, the Black Gates shall hold no justice either!"

Current Head of Dynasty
Name: Count Gustaf von Eisenwier
Age: 63
Dynasty: von Eisenwier
Heir: Johannus von Eisenwier(Age 32)
Children: Tanja von Eisenwier (Age 46), Sabine von Eisenwier (Age 38), Johannus von Eisenwier (Age 32)
Orientation: Administration
Location: Eisenwier
Bio: A very old family, with the values of hardwork, devotion and endurance. They have been ruling the plains of Eisenwier since before the formation of Mivean. The common name for the dynasty and the region is the "Plains of the Ironwinds", however the Eisenwier are very persistent about continuing referring to themselves by the old name.

Demesne of Dynasty
County of Eisenwier
The capital of the County known as Ebene is the main holding of the Eisenwier family where they rule from and live. Its a port town dedicated as the central nerve point for the Eisenwier rule and from where trade and dealings with people outside the county is done. There are some small fortifications but for actual warfare not much thought has been given to the city as the Eisenwier has managed to avoid open hostilities for too long time for it to have any importance for the city.
YYQu3ge.jpg

City of Ebene

However the Eisenwier do understand the importance of being able to defend their demesne and have a fortress known as Eisen Keep in the middle of their lands which is their holdout in case the worst would happen. Located on the few hills in their lands in the center of the province, one of the few areas that yet have been cultivated for agriculture.
UByfnOz.jpg

Eisen Keep

Eisenwier has been described as the breadbasket of the Kingdom, being completely agricultural and reliant on its farmers for its income it does indeed live up to that reputation. The landscape is very flat except for the Spitzen mountain and the hills surrounding the Eisen Keep in the middle of the land. Because of the plains very strong winds blow from the sea all the way down to the southern border.

The Plains just outside Ebene

The Military of Eisenwier
The Landsknechten of the Eisenwier are at most a policing force rather than an actual fighting force, they are tasked with making sure that the city of Ebene is safe and in case of war protect the Eisen Keep from intruders. The Landsknechten got their name from being knights of the land, commoners who patrol the long roads that connect the various small farmer communities and keeping the lands population safe. Their weapon of choice is a pike, making it much easier to keep the enemy away as you fight giving the Landsknecht the control of the battle.

The Landsknechten von Ebene regiment

However the military has a branch known as the Edelknechten, these are military career officers by the low nobility of Eisenwier and nearby regions. These make up the real fighting force of Eisenwier although a bit small, their main purpose is to defend and protect the von Eisenwier family. The captain of this guard has been for a long time the von Treueblut, Johann for hundred years ago was a commoner who saved the heir of the von Eisenwier. As a reward he was knighted and since then his family has been devoted to the protection of their lords with an amazing zealous commitment to that task.

Shortly after the judgement of Duke Micheal Guerrin is read, an open letter is sent to the lords of Mivean...

House Starborn
Honour. Duty. Strength.

My Lords of Mivean,

Patros guide you all. As we stand at a crossroads, looking ahead as a new time of peace lays ahead, under the reign of our new king, it was my honour and privilege to pass judgement on those who allegedly harmed the realm. Justice was brought swiftly to Magnus Blackgate. May God judge him justly as we have. The matter of Micheal Guerrin, however, was one of greater ambiguity. The debate raged from the side of mercy, to the side of harsh punishment. For myself, I advocated that the crime of High Treason was unfounded, and in their wisdom, my fellow judges agreed. However, it was decided, for reasons I am sure most can guess, that some punishment need be doled out.

What kind of man would I be, to sit in judgement of Duke Guerrin who, in essence, is alledged of the very crime I myself took part in only a short time ago; taking up arms against King Edward? A hypocrite, a man of low honour and character? Such a man I am not. I share the responsibility for burden our kingdom shouldered during the crises. Make no mistake, if I could do it again I would, so sacred I take my oaths.

I, Sumner Starborn, Count of Daggerfall, hereby abdicate the rule of Daggerfall to my son and heir, Tybolt Starborn. I pledge my life, such that remains, in service to the church. May Patros guide me. For my role in defiance, of the then Duke of Cowen, I pledge 2000 gold to the Crown. May it be used to mitigate those who suffered in this war.

Patros guide you. God bless you.

~Sumner Starborn.

Age: 41
Dynasty: d'Cornouaille
Children: Thibault (21), Marie-Therese (18), Alice (16), Martin (12), Alexandre (12)
Orientation: Strategy
Location: Niedervisse

Bio:

The d'Cornouailles have long been the most important family of the trading port of Cornouaille in the Niedervisse Islands. Steeped in naval tradition, the family was granted the County by Henri III due to the number of ships they provided for the war effort. Despite all this, however, the d'Cornouailles have had little love for mainlanders besides the raw materials they bring to the islands, and consider their attachment to the kingdom of Mivean more a measure of protection than as an integral part of a nation. Ruling from Castle Failnaught overlooking Cornouaille city, the Cornouailles hope to achieve prominence and as much money as possible. As their motto says: "through hardship, (to) the stars."

News From Daggerfall...

funeral-procession.jpg

The realm of Daggerfall is grieved to learn of the passing of a favoured son, Ser Timmoth of Westgate at the age of eighteen. A loyal agent of the former Count, Ser Timmoth gained notoriety from his investigation into the murder of Cardinal Visran, uncovering the identity of the killer. Beset by cowardly rogues in the Downs of Swordstone, Ser Timmoth heroically defeated the scoundrels who sought to rob him, only to succumb to fever from infection, 6 months later. A valiant man as Timmoth is a rare gem in such time. Ser Timmoth, is survived by his darling wife, Sarah of Starborn, and their son Andrew, his father Ser Jobe and grandfather Ser Garrus, as well as his uncle Ser Jerrah and cousin Harold. May Patros guide his soul to our Father.

"Faced with such sadness, we go to Patros for answers, and failing that, we must find them ourselves. Little comfort there is for us, confronted with such loss."

To the Count of the Lower Plait

Dearest Brother,

In a hand made unsteady from the momentous joy of the occasion, I have the great pleasure, indeed the immense delight to bear the glad tidings that Lady Anne has given birth to a healthy son, the newest addition to the House of Sommet. Church-bells throughout Cowen and the Upper Plait pealed a merry anthem to announce to all the birth of a son and heir. You will, I imagine, share in my happiness for, just as I have become a father, you have become an uncle.

Lady Anne, after enduring a lengthy and at times troubled labour, has been attended by the best midwives in the land and is on the path to a full recovery. I must confess my sentiments of fear and dread during the final moments of the pregnancy—when the physicians were contemplating drastic measures to save the child—but am glad that both son and mother have come through the ordeal and are now healthy and happy.

Turning to other matters, I must extend my congratulations to you dear brother, for I hear news that, following your travels in the Aruthian Empire, Duke Louis has offered you a commission in his diplomatic corps. The Aruthian Empire has often enjoyed great influence in the Royal Court of Mivean, influence exercised through a network of envoys lobbying for Aruthian inerests. That Duke Louis should have offered you such an important and influential position is indeed a great honour, and one well suited to your tactfulness and skill. Have you decided whether to accept such a commission?

To the Count of Artageth

Your Excellency the Count of Artageth,

The rumours that women of ill-repute are luring young boys for libidinous encounters, and tales that members of the local gentry have succumbed to hedonistic pursuits, is rapidly making Artageth a byword for lechery and all manner of lewd display, attracting to the city gates the most unsavoury characters in the realm. I must implore Your Excellency to put an end to such scandal.

The age-old profession of these women is all very well in its place, but when ladies of the night begin to advertise their services in broad daylight [or, in some cases, actually carrying out their occupation in plain view], some attention must be paid to the moral standards to which the nobility of the realm hold ourselves, and by which we are judged.

While cautious not to raise too heavy a hand against these women, many of whom have been forced by unfortunate circumstance to take up such employment, one cannot remain silent when infants are abandoned to perish in the streets of Artageth. Children, even bastard children, are deserving of a parent’s tender care. Having recently become a father, I am perhaps more inclined to be attentive to matters relating to children. Nevertheless, fatherhood is not a prerequisite to express deep concern when countless numbers of new-borns are left to die in the back alleys of Mivean.

I must urge Your Excellency, for the sake of the innocent children and to uphold the good-standing our Kingdom, that necessary steps are taken to mitigate the great scandal and loss of life stemming from the debauched practices taking place in Artageth.

Dearest Brother,

I have heard the news of the birth of your son, my servants made sure to bring it to me in quickest fashion. I am very glad Lady Anne survived the ordeal and I wish her good health and both of you a healthy son. Have you named your son yet? I have planned to send a gift which would include his name, as a token for good health and strength, which I will send as soon as I have heard your response to this letter.

I also congratulate you brother, not only to the birth of a son but also of your newly acquired title, you would do father very proud, as you make me proud as well, this will only further secure our power in the realm, we can only be thankful to our King for this gift, there is no way to repay this. We can only hope good fortune keeps us company in the potentially hard times to come. I am however hoping to avoid the threats that may lie before us, as I will be discussing with Duke Louis. I was very honored to be selected by him to attempt to better the relationships between our two realms and I will try my best to keep us at peace, this will all depends on a few people in our realm however, especially the more... pious ones. I wouldn't like to say I was worried but the basic facts are there; side with the Empire for peace and anger our god, or side with the Faith and risk a war we can't win.

I shall not try and drag you into this any more however, dark words shouldn't keep us away from the joy that your new-born son has given us. I hope you, your son and Anne stay in good health, as I might not be able to reply to a lot of letters the coming time, I am currently packing and gathering men to travel back to Duke Louis, I am however forward to looking for another letter from you.

Your Brother,
David Sommet,
