I've been playing the US version of EU for about two weeks now, and the game seems to have a problem with unexpectedly quitting to the desktop in all sorts of situations. This includes, but is not limitied to, right clicking in the diplomacy screen (read: It happens all the time at seemingly unrelated times.) When the game quits, I'm thrown back to the desktop, and the CD player seems to be locked playing music (i.e. I have to restart Windows to get it to stop).

In addition to this, the game does some weird things on occasion, e.g. not allowing me to annex vassal states, een after ten years and with a relation of +200.

Is there a patch for the US version?

The right-clicking on the diplomacy screen is well known. You should avoid doing this.

I have the US version too and I've been playing heavily. Luckily, I've never had a crash or a corrupt save game as others have reported.

I run a PIII-800 with 128 megs of RAM and 16+ gigs of free hard drive space. I think I've read in other threads that having 128 megs of RAM helps solve problems. But I'm not sure about this.

Oh, on the patch, the word last week was that a patch is due this week.

in my case the game crashes when I right click on the diplomatic screen, I've just conquered all of Hansa and I would like to force-annex them.
and it also crashes when I try to skip that stupid strategy one movie.
I always get this message: Fatal error:could not initialize Video from FmV.

we need a patch here. also, STRATEGY ONE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are at war with a country that you want to annex without using the Diplomacy Screen, move the cursor over one of the country's provinces, right-click, and select 'make an offer of peace' from the menu. This should help you avoid that particular crashing problem.

As for the opening video, I don't what the problem is there, I click past the video all the time, and never seem to have a problem.

I have had frequent crashes playing the game, however. In fact, I have playing this game practically every day since I got it two weeks ago, and I have yet to finish a game without crashing! It seems people on other threads have had the same type of problem, including people with 128 megs of RAM or more.

So--does the UK patch address this problem? Can we even use the UK patch on the American version? Or is there something else coming out? Does anybody out there know?

You can NOT use any of the different patches on other language versions than the ones they are intended for... But Paradox has said they will now only release simultaniously in all languages...so that when the new 1.08 patch comes out it will be available for the US customers as well...
And the US version is already from the factory 1.07c so you don't need to dl the patch like the UK buyers should...

As for your question about vassalization and annexing:

1. do you share a common border? I think you have to if you want to annex diplomatically

2. They may be your vassal, doesn't mean they want to be you. I guess there is a certain calculation or randomness to vassal going for the full-blown annexation. Just like real life :)

I have had multiple crashes too and it really pisses me of.

About annexing:

You DON'T need a common border to annex another country.

The country you want to annex MUST fulfill:

- same state religion

- 10+ years vassal of yours

- 190+ relations between you

- smaller than you(less area)

- feel it needs to join you(for protection etc.)

I'd say the randomnes is in the last requirement. The situation where a country feels itself vulnerable is might come up in weirdest situations.

You *have* to share a border when diplomatically annexing.
You don´t have to share a border when vassalising.

There has been much confusion about this because of Spain annexing Naples. But as You can walk an army from Sicily to Apulia, the game treats these two provinces as bordering provinces.
And yes, in 1.07b the routine was faulty, allowing unintended exceptions to the rule. But this was a bug and not a feature. :)

Yes the new patch is needed. After 1.07c I haven't been able to save/load my games anymore. So every day I start a new game and it ends when I try to save it. Or in those rare cases saving doesnt crash the whole game it's not loadable save anyway :(

You are the second person telling us that he/she can't save or load the game. Can you please tell us you hardware configuration and which O/S you are using?

Well, I finally experienced my first crash to desktop last night. It was around March so I didn't lose much. Provided, of course, that my last autosave in January is OK.

I haven't checked it yet. This game is engrossing and, if it had not crashed, I would have stayed up even later than I should have. As it is, I am not getting enough sleep on work nights. I used the crash as a sign that I had to go to sleep.

Please, let me win the lottery so that I can play without having to work.

Hello Patric.

I too have the same problem. I cannot save and EU crashes to the desktop or locks up frequently, even when I am doing nothing. It just dropped me to the desktop three times in the last hour.

System:

Compaq Presario 5677
Intel Pentium II @ 450 mhz
128MB 100 mhz sdram
Windows 98
DirectX 8.0a
20.0 GB Hard Drive w 5.0 available
Diamond Viper V770 TNT2 Ultra v/card w 32MB of 133mhz sdram
Diamond Sonic Impact Aureal Vortex s/card

Thanks.

After 4 days I've had nothing but crashes. Even if I just let the game run by itself it will drop back to the desktop. If I try and save there's about a 1 in 4 chance that I get kicked out. Likewise if I try and load a game most will crash upon loading (not counting the ones that did not completely save.)

I have noticed that the game does create some temp files in my c: emp dir. and that not all of them are removed after the game fails. If I try and run the game with this temp file there it will not start up.

PC Specs:
PIII 800, Win98se
Voodoo3 AGP
SoundBlaster 512
30GB HD
Creative CDROM (48x)
256MB RAM
US Version of EU

I've reinstalled everthing twice now (including 98) and have verified that I have the latest drivers and DirectX 8.0a. I work on PC's for a living and I can't find anything else wrong, nor do any of the other programs installed have problems.

With the saved game files that do not load, I have opened them up and noticed that garbage has been written in them in some places. Sometimes there are stray characters in front of the fields and sometimes the fields themselves are garbled.

The games looks promising and the little that I have played has been enjoyable. I only have another 6 days to find a fix or return the game for a refund. Is there any fix on the near horizon?

I'm playing the German version with my:

PII433
Win98se
Soundblaster AWE32
Riva TnT II
128MB RAM

I know what you mean VaDude. :(

Sounds like your situation is like mine. I sure dont like it either but I can bring some hope for you. It has not been like this allways. Only after the latest patch 1.07c. What ever they did in that has got something to do with our problems. We just hope wise men of Paradox take notice of this shitty shitty thing.

Johan? Patric?? Anybody???????

I'm just hoping there's a fix soon. Like I said the game (what little I've played) is very enjoyable until it crashes... It reminds me a lot of a couple of board games I used to love playing.

I was curious if it was just the US version or if all of the other versions also had similar problems. Misery loves company...

I have experienced frequent lockups playing EU which require restarting the computer and loading the latest save.
After a while I noticed that the first session usually lasted 2-3 hours before crashing, subsequent sessions only 30 mins or even less. So now, after 2 hours of play, I switch off the computer completely, make a cup of coffee, cold-boot and resume play. Its now been 3 days since I had a crash.
So, a solution (for me anyway), but I wonder why it works?

Ok, this strange...

I loaded the game onto my NT 4.0 Workstation at the office to test it there and it ran fine! So then I loaded it up on my second PC at home and it ran fine there too. So I wiped out my primary PC again reloaded everything (including 98 on a blank HD), made sure I had the newest drivers and still the game dumps to the desktop shortly after the scenario starts.

The primary PC has these devices:
CPU - PIII 800
Voodoo 3 (I have and I have tried both the PCI and AGP versions)
Sound Blaster PCI512
Creative 48x CDROM (tried an old 4x one too...)
256 MB RAM
Motherboard: VIA M6VCX (133)
30 GB HD

My secondary PC has this:
CPU - PII 350
Voodoo 2 & a really old Diamond Stealth 64
Sound Blaster 16
a 4 year old Sony SCSI CD-R
196 MB RAM
Motherboard: Soyo 6BB Baby AT/ATX (100)
8 GB HD

The NT box is a Dell Precision 420 Workstation. (I don't have the specs other than it has 2 PIII 800 MHz processors)

So what gives...the older parts work better! I didn't even bother to update any of the drivers on the second one. So what's causing the problem with EU? Any suggestions?

Arrrggggg....
