What can I say? It is a rouge-like game with extremely dice roll chances of getting out alive, and the developers themselves were bewildered when anyone got attached to the crew characters.
I'd say settle in, but don't get too attached to any of these poor, unfortunate souls.

FTL Attempt 1 : The Kestrel A
For those who don't know, the game FTL is designed to simulate being a sociopathic and deeply incompetent starship captain, with a rag tag crew of idiots, desperately trying to reach the Federation before the Rebel Fleet shows up and kills everyone.
Along the way, we will commit space crimes.
My starter crew is three men, Swampsby, Biggy Blue, and Ken. You can customise the names, race, gender and etc of crewmembers, but I don't want to get too attached, so these three chaps it is! If I get really good or unlock a mega ship, or something, Star Trek characters will no doubt show up at some point...
I warp out of the start location and immediately run into a ship that's experiencing serious problems. I send over my men to help, of course, and watch Ken burn to death. Oops. We didn't even get any reward for saving the other ship, possibly because it exploded.
Down to two men on the first segment of sector 1, I feel the run is already probably fucked, but I press on because I will take my punishment like a man. Or a disembodied mind controlling space construct, I suppose.
It turns out Ken was holding us back, because Swampsby and Biggy Blue immedaitly become a lot more effective at their jobs of being a pilot and engineer. For those that haven't played the game, that means the chances of the ship dodging incoming attacks or objects gets much higher.
This is good.
We also, after managing to trap and asphyxiate a pirate crew to death by shooting out their engines and their oxygen production (watching them panic and slowly die of no air on the sensors), it turns out they'd stowed away a captive slave who's still alive. Must have been an air-proof locker with its own supply, I guess? Whatever, they're part of the crew now! They're part of a race of robotic engineer types, so I put them/it on the shields, and start calling them Madge. Because that is their name, apparently.
Things are looking up. We made it to the end of the first sector, have three quests to get to in the next bit of the map, and only mildly bumped the ship through an asteroid field.
However, when we get to sector 2, everything goes a bit wrong. Pirates teleport onto the ship, knock out our air supply (I guess they feel like playing dangerously), and start a mammouth firefight in the med bay. They're tougher and better at fighting than my crew is, but we're being healed every second we're in the med bay.
So they all die together when the oxygen runs out, and I'm left trapped alone on a derelict ship, unable to do anything.
So far...I'm enjoying the game. Not entirely sure I'm playing it right though.
