I have no good news. Here are the results from nvidia:

I'd like to inform you that we still can not replicate the problem you are having with the game. I suspect there is a possibility this may be a Windows issue. We recommends a fresh re-installation of Win7. If you want to contact MS, you can try it here:

Haha they've got to be joking.

Even if they are not, a fresh reinstall won't do the trick. I've done it, and I still have the problem.

But to be honest, I've more or less given up on this game.

They are not joking. A driver installation can get corrupted in a way that nothing except a fresh installation of the OS will solve it.
