When I try to play any of the game's tutorials or scenarios, the music keeps playing and the screen turns black, and after about 15 seconds the game experiences a "critical error" and crashes. I have reinstalled twice, tried with and without the patch, and still this problem occurs. When I try to uninstall the game fully, an error messages comes up saying "Componet : Core Files, Error : Catastrophic Failure"

The demo worked fine, and all my drivers are updated.

should be a little waitbar along the bottom that scrolls to the right as the scenario loads. if there's a loading error, it usually occurs during that scrolling. i never had that problem with any paradox game before. can you post computer specs? might be an OS thing.

welcome to the boards. sorry your first post was to tech support.

Try this things:

1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
4) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-3.

BTW, Welcome to the forums

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu - Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select "Save All Information" button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says "DirectX components" then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

Well lots of problems there.

The report suggests a reinstall of Direct X, that may involve reinstall of the operting system.

Also you are using the VIA drivers which are known to be buggy, not much you can do about that except always make sure you have the latest ones.

What about reinstalling DirectX?

I installed the latest directx over the one I already have (I'm not sure on how to uninstall it) and the installation was basically instantanious and didn't seem to change anything on the dxdiag screen or stop the game crashing.

Whether I get it to work or not, thanks for all the help.

I have the same problem with my game tried everything its driving me crazy. I can play just about any other game on this machine from HOI to doom 3
Make sure you have updated all your drivers and operating system then:
Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu - Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select "Save All Information" button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says "DirectX components" then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

You could try a repair install of your operating system.

THere was a program called DirectXbuster, but I just followed the link I had for them and it apears to have vanished. Maybe do a search for them or something simmilar, since you will start to experiance other troubles if you don't get your DX fixed up.

I found directxbuster and rolled back to version 7, but now the newer versions will not install over it....

....er, any advice?
