Summary

Game crashing after Windows 11 24H2 Update

Description

Hi, since updating to Windows 11 24H2, me and many others, whom I've been in contact with via the forum's thtreads encountered problems with Crusader Kings 3. The game either crashes during gameplay or won’t boot up at all. When it freezes, I can’t use Alt+Tab or Ctrl+Alt+Del to close it, and I have to shut down the PC directly from the power supply. Below I will list my system specs and troubleshooting I tried so far.

System specs:

GPU: Nvidia RTX 4070 TI
CPU: Intel i9-10900KF
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z490 Gaming X
RAM: 32 GB

Steps I've tried:

Clean reinstall of Windows
Uninstalled the game with Revo Uninstaller and reinstalled on different drives
Added the game as an exception in Windows Defender
Ran both Steam and CK3 as Administrator
Confirmed graphics drivers are up to date
Moved my save files to another folder to rule out corrupted saves
Verified Visual C++ (ver. 14.40.33816.0) and .NET Framework (ver. 4.8.1) are up to date
Changed the Windows “Energy Plan" to “Performance" (I'm not sure if this affects desktop PCs, but I'm out of ideas)

As a side note, I contacted Microsoft support and they reported and I coute "it appears that this may be a compatibility issue after a computer system update, requiring the game developer to also make in-game updates for the new version of the system." And they instructed me to either wait or to downgrade to 23H2.

Steps to reproduce

I've been playing well for over 320 hours and when Windows 11 24H2 came out I decided to update, since then the game constantly crashes on boot. It loads for a while, I see the loading screen and as I described earlier the whole PC just frozes, not even being able to CTRL ALT DEL, and having to shut down the PSU.

Game Version

1.14.2.2

Platform

Windows

Game crash and hung computer after 5 minutes of gameplay.... :(
I don't know what is causing your issue then. Can you make a new thread in Tech Support so I ca4n concentrate on your specific case, thanks.

@AndrewT do you have any visibility on how much attention (if any) Paradox is giving to this problem? You mentioned that you consider this an issue on Windows' side, but I cannot find any online threads or discussion related to this problem outside of Paradox (I see many, many discussions related to the Windows 11 Update, but none that describe the problems that we've discussed in this thread, and none that name potential causes that apply at least in my own case).

For this reason I have no confidence that Windows feels more pressure to fix this on their end than Paradox does, since at least here it's being reported, so I feel if a solution is going to come from anywhere, it will have to be from Paradox first.

I've seen the freeze issue since last week too, no AV or overheating issues and it happens only on this game, haven't tried other Clausewitz based games but I've been on Windows 10 and now Windows 11 both fully up to date. I've opened a new bug report but I can't post the link due to the way these forums are managed.

Last week i started a new game because of the update, before that i was doing my test after windows update, or new advices on an old savegame. I'm not been starting a new game for a long time, at least not after the issue was reported. After ten minutes my PC froze. The situation looks even worse than before prior to 1.14.3 i was able to play for half an hour, but i suppose it's just a matter of luck.

Ok. I did the regedit steps, disabled virtualization(BIOS), disabled fast boot(BIOS), reinstalled the launcher, turned off the steam overlay, updated the nvidia drivers, switched the game settings to vulkan. Over the course of 4 hours there was one crash to the desktop, but this is not a complete computer freeze. I will inform additionally if there are problems.

UPD Still ok! Looks good!

This issue has been happening since November. It's not getting fixed any time soon.

Can't play on DX11

Core's get hammered.

Unless I remove the affinity of 4 or more cores PC freezes.

does anybody know if the KB5052093 is fixing the bug? I wasn't able to find any info in the update regarding this game and the thing is i'm a bit tired of testing the game after any update.

For the Win11 24H2 freeze issues. We're still looking into this issue. If anyone manages to get a memory dump of when this happens it would be very appreciated but I understand that due to the nature of the freeze that this will be difficult to achieve. In the meantime we're in contact with Microsoft and working in-house to analyze the issue.
I have a full memory dump of the freeze (5gb) how can I send it to you?

I've been playing yesterday and today more than 6 hours in total and for the first in a long i've been playing without freezings. It looks like the windows update (KB5052093) actually fixed something that was wrong because performance has improved as well. Even on new game the performance is fluid. I've not been able to play like this since the fatidic day of Windows major update. I'll keep testing it but for the first time it looks promising.
