Ever since I downloaded Holy Fury the game fails to launch. I press play on steam and it just states "syncronising" for a second or two before stopping, after that nothing happens. No Error message, no launcher, nothing.

I also have this issue. I bought Holy Fury this morning, and after it downloaded I attempted to start the game, to no avail.

I have, in order:
- Restarted Steam
- Verified the integrity of the game cache (100% fine, no problem)
- Uninstalled and reinstalled Crusader Kings II.
- Attempted to launch the game directly from the /program files (x86)/Steam Library/Crusader Kings II .exe "CK2game".

None of these attempted solutions actually fixed the problem that I'm facing. I'll press launch on the Steam page, my "game state" will go into CK2 for a few seconds (it will appear to my friends as if I'm running CK2) and then the game state will end. No launcher, no game, no nothing. In all attempts to launch the game, the application appears in the task manager as a background process that occupies limited CPU, gradually falling over many seconds to 0% CPU usage before self-terminating.

As I'm an avid fan of the game and someone who has been quite excited for this DLC's release for quite some time, please let me know if there's any solutions at all.

Edit: After poking around this sub-forum a bit, I've noticed that there was an attempted solution suggested here: (https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/game-not-starting.1128003/). I attempted to implement this fix by reverting to the old version available as a beta in the Steam properties tab of the game's options. This did not work for me.

Frankly, this does not seem like an isolated issue, nor a minor one. I understand that integrating a game's expansion content into a platform like Steam may be complicated, but this game-breaking issue is something that probably should have been caught and fixed before release. I have never experienced an issue like this from any Paradox game/DLC release nor any other game on Steam.

Please, anyone, keep me updated if any other solutions are found/proposed.

Go to Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II. In there, delete the folder called "gfx". Note that this is NOT the /gfx/ folder under Steam/SteamApps/common/CK2 .
Now restart your game, it will recreate that folder and fix the problem.

You also need to add ck2game.exe to the exceptions list/whitelist of your antivirus app.

Obviously disable all mods until they get updated accordingly.

There is no Crusader Kings II folder inside Documents/Paradox Interactive.
I have not played CK 2 for a few months and this is completely fresh install.

Almost certainly an AV app issue then: you need to add ck2game.exe to the exceptions list/whitelist of your antivirus app.

It is on the whitelistlist, and have always been.
Took it off and put it back again, no change.

With game updates there is a new ck2game.exe which usually needs to be re-added, as the AV app doesn't know that the changed version is okay.

What AV app do you use?

Windows defender, have been for a long time. Worked fine a few months ago when I put CK 2 down for a while.

If you have the Controller Folder Access feature enabled, you need to add ck2game.exe to the "Apps Allowed Through" list there.

If that doesn't help Use Notepad to make a new text file called userdir.txt in the Steam CK2 folder where ck2game.exe is. In that file place a single dot, save and exit. This tells the game to write the user files right there instead of under Documents. If that works and the game now runs, you can replace that dot with any file path you like.

Can we get a bump on this. I am having the EXACT same issue. Tried everything as well. Added exceptions, you name it. Worked fine until I installed the expansion, but hadn't played in a while so I wouldn't know if it was before that...

It's usually best to start your own thread, but okay then.

What AV app do you have?

Do EU4, HOI4 and Stellaris still work okay?

What id you revert CK2 to 2.8.3.4 , does that run for you?
