Hello everyone!

First of all, I want to thank you for this great tutorial, I started creating my own map and it is mostly going on smoothly.

However, over the past few days, I have been struggling with a visual glitch on the coastline (see picture) that I think is related to the topology, I tried my best to fiddle with it, but with no success.

I searched through this thread but found no answer to my particular problem, I tried adding the ‘FX’ folder proposed earlier without effect.

If someone has a fix or would be so kind to take a look at my files, I would be very grateful.

Thank you!

Thank you for the quick reply, I will try that!

Edit:
Unfortunaltely, this had the opposite effect (see picture).
I will try to smooth the edge between the land and the ocean and see if it does any good.

Edit II:
Using the blurring tool I managed to obtain decent results.
It seems that smoothing actually helps in my case.
Thank you again for your help,
Good day.

Hi all, having a mess around for a personal hobby-project and, while I can get the map to load without crashing, upon arriving at the character select, my provinces don't seem to be showing. Instead I just get terrain showing as "Ocean" on my single land province, said-province not appearing as selectable (nor the character who should be there), and no relevant errors showing in the validator. I can't seem to see anything I might have missed in the tutorials, so I'm a little stumped.

File attached. :) If anyone could take a gander, I'd appreciate it.

I have a lot of questions, sorry if I sound stupid. I have followed the tutorial and I'm CTDing right away, the only thing I did different is I started with more than one province drawn in my map, and I populated the extra counties in map filler tool. First question is do I need to add a holder to every province history file? I ran the validator and it's giving me thousands of errors about artifacts, scripted triggers, trade routes, and so. Is the tutorial out of date with current DLC's? What steps should I take to get up and going with my first mod? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone!
So I followed the tutorial after some attempts following other tutorials (most of them old), and I still can not figure why I've got constant CTDs when the game is loading. I followed the tutorial step by step, using all the tools and precautions submitted here, with one exception (two counties instead of one, with two characters).

I read most of this thread, particuliary the recent messages, and I tried to start again from scratch and follow the method of one of the people here.
I took the files of Dragonsploof corrected by mikeucc (the mod is called DF) and after some tries, I went pretty much copying what was there to be sure of what went wrong.
The thing is Dragonsploof's mod worked perfectly (except a CTD when starting to play, but it is a WIP), I could load CK2, go to the main menu and see his map.
I did exactly what he did, and what mikeucc had corrected, but when I try to test my mod, I have always a CTD (essentially when the game load the graphics, or attempt to create rivers, rarely it was also during loading of the flags and coat of arms).
I checked and double checked my mod, and I can't find what is wrong!

The only diffrence between Dragonsploof's mod and mine (and same with the tutorial here as said above) is that I made two counties instead of one, and therefore created two characters.
I tried later to go back to one county and one character, but still not working. I tried with different maps and resolutions, simple maps or more complex maps, I tried with a blank normal_height and with a detailed one (done with Crazybump), and still not working. I tried to remove any file or txt or whatever to go back to the original way of the tutorial, still CTDs. I also tried to have detailed flags (taken from vanilla) and later those with the question mark. Always CTDs. And I tried of course to run the game with and without DLCs. Doesn't change a thing. Everytime the game crash to desk during the loading screen.

I'm very confused because I don't understand why Dragonsploof's mod, even in WIP, works fine, but not mine, even if I pretty much copy/paste his files...
(understand that I don't plan to steal his mod or whatever, I did what I did simply to understand what I did wrong with mine, and his mod was the only I downloaded here that works)

If you can, please help me figure this out! This is a test mod for a bigger map that I have prepared (a new world, possibly a complete overhaul in the end). This is my first serious CK2 mod, and I'm a bit lost here...

I have CK2 v.2.8.1.1 ISRM with the latest DLC Jade Dragon.
Here's a copy of the most frequent error I get:
EXCEPTION: 0xC00000FD at address: 0x014E70B9: STACK OVERFLOW
Version: Unknown Version

Thanks a lot, hope you can help me solve this! ;)

Got it going, turns out it was the technology dates in the map filler tool, I set the minimum to 1060 and max to 1600 and disabled all DLC.

The whole map seems to be too dark even with bright green color maps and no normal map but that's another issue.

I just want to give thanks to JonStryker, I know it's annoying getting the same questions from us newbies. Perhaps a FAQ section should be added to the tutorials.

i cant seem to get the map filler tool to work correctly.
it finds the right path but doesnt create any new files and instead tells me this:

with this provinceDef:

Here's some things that i found when following this tutorial:

Make sure you change the technology dates properly to something like 1060-1600 or earlier, map filler is set up for the witcher mod I assume and it's easy to overlook.

I also found that the normal and height maps didn't work when my map size was 5184x3072. The map was completely flat and very dark. However when I scaled it down to 3072x1792 it worked flawlessly.

Disable all the DLC when starting out at first. I haven't got to that point just yet but most DLC stuff will have to be modified to function in your mod.

Hello everyone!

I'm still strugling to understand why I can't work my mod out.
Nothing changed since my previous post regarding my A Tale Of Arkha test. It still crashes, even if it's a perfect copy of Dragonsploof's mod (which was corrected by mikeucc and submitted here. I downloaded it to study it). Again the only difference is DF has one county created, as ATaleOfArkha has two.

Since then, I tried to move on and continue working on my mod by completing the provinces map and filling the provinceDef as much as I could.
It still crashes, and it is still a "stack overflow" apparently (EDIT: no more exception.txt now. version 2.7.2. helps?), but I've found some weird errors in the error log:
-some provinces are reported with "no pixels in provinces.bmp" (I checked them and they have no apparent error, so they should "exist" on map). This error is shown in the error log ([map.cpp:1449]: Province 29 has no pixels in provinces.bmp) and in the graphics log ([provincetemplate.cpp:237]: Province 29 has invalid origin). (EDIT: not anymore: my provinces.bmp was messed up)
-every single title generated by the map filler and filled in provinceDef are reported as already exiting. I don't understand if this is an issue. Here's a copy of the first one reported, every title have the same type of error. (EDIT: not anymore. version 2.7.2. helps?)
>> [title.cpp:6641]: Title Already Exists!
Title: c_comte_afghan_1
Location: common/landed_titles/landed_titles.txt(408)
-in the default.map, it shows a stat of 1521 provinces for a max_provinces of 1520. However in the provinceDef, I only have 1519 entries. No unused provinces however, I've corrected that one before, and I spend a ludicrous time chasing any rogue pixel so that should be okay. (EDIT: not anymore. I've redone et re-checked the provinceDef and the provinces.bmp, some provinces were wrong)
-in the graphics log also, I have a lot of reports of "too small rivers" but I don't know what they refer to, as I haven't made any rivers except major rivers and lakes on rivers.bmp. As the crashes sometimes occurs during "generating rivers" I suppose that's one of the main problems. (EDIT: at this point it is the only error I still have)

Also when using the mapfiller, like prester11 shown on his screenshot, I also have a lot of "provinceDef has wrong format!? / No country, line [x] ----" in the cmd window. I checked my files, nothing's missing but I don't know if this could be an issue. I use provinceDef as provided here and saved the file without "updating" the format as sometimes asked by OpenOffice Calc.
EDIT: it is still happening, however I still don't know if it is connected to my problems...

So I have some problems I cannot understand where they come from here. I checked and double checked my files, before and after using the mapfiller, and I pretty sure nothing is wrong with them. The rivers.bmp, topology.bmp and terrain.bmp are in 8bit and indexed, color_map and color-map-water were made following the tutorial, trees.bmp is in 8bit and indexed and empty (black only, no tree) and world_normal_height.bmp is "blank" with a single default color as suggested. provinces.bmp is in 24bit, not indexed, and I made sure no anti aliasing were applied, and no rogue pixel were anywhere. Each RGB color used are unique, no double use...
Like buckzor pointed, I also looked in the config.properties of the mapfiller to make sure to change the tech dates to 1060-1600 and later checked again that there is no apparent conflict with tech dates.

I uploaded a .rar here with:
Arkha (the main mod, with all provinces created and the one I want to achieve)
ATaleOfArkha (which is the same of the one I uploaded in my previous post)
DF (which is Dragonsploof's mod corrected by mikeucc, and untouched. It works and I used it for ATaleOfArkha)
EDIT: for "Arkha", I've worked some hours after this post, and the provinces.bmp and provinceDef have changed: I've updated the .rar uploaded here which now have the most recent version of Arkha (and the same ATaleOfArkha and DF files).

I don't know why it keeps crashing like that, I tried to find the issues as much as I could before posting here, but I'm really clueless now, especially regarding ATaleOfArkha (not working) comparred to DF (working) which are basically the same.
Last time I tried, I got those errors in the [mod]/logs/exceptions.txt ("//" is a for a new line):
Arkha: ######## EXCEPTION: 0xC00000FD at address: 0x01C170B9: STACK OVERFLOW //Version: Unknown Version // 04/08/18 12:01:41
ATaleOfArkha: ######## EXCEPTION: 0xC00000FD at address: 0x019F70B9: STACK OVERFLOW // Version: Unknown Version // 04/08/18 11:30:41

I'm still using CK2 v.2.8.1.1 ISRM with the latest DLC Jade Dragon, and tried to launch with and without DLCs activated. I tried using previous updates of CK2, but nothing changed.

Hope someone can help me, at least point me to the issue to work...

EDIT: I worked again for some hours, some changes happened. It appears my provinces.bmp was messed up (I don't know how but some provinces I've checked appeared with rogue pixels again and again even after correction. But it seems okay now. Same with provinceDef, some RGB settings were not savec correctly. Weird but I think it's good now).
I've changed to the 2.7.2. update to launch the Witcher Kings and see how the provincedDef and all files were worked out. Of course Witcher Kings works. My mod at this point still doesn't.
However, I don't know if it is due to the change of version, but now I don't have any exception file appearing when launching my mod, and I don't have particuliar error log either (just one type about wrong titles in bookmarks) so I suppose this tutorial misses something the new update needs to work.
It still crashes at launching, but I don't have any error shown in the logs, and now I only assume I have to work out my rivers (the only big error entry in graphics.txt log), or something in the mod files. I keep searching & working, but I guess this is a progress...

EDIT2: I finally put my finger on the issue. All works fine when I suppress my rivers.bmp. The game loads the rivers from vanilla ck2. I checked my rivers.bmp, make sure it's okay, so I don't see the problem. I only have land in white and sees and major rivers in pink, no rivers at all. I think it is the issue here, the game maybe try to load rivers, but get confused between my rivers.bmp (no rivers drawn) and vanilla. When it loads without mine, I have the correct land and water areas including major rivers, but I have rivers from vanilla. So I have to find why it make the confusion. I'm able to play, until autosave (when the game try to autosave it crashes. Nothing special in the error logs). So the issue is definitely my rivers.bmp and the fact the game doesn't seem to consider it empty of rivers. I'll try to work this out. I'm still working back to 2.7.2. version of ck2, I don't know yet if it works with the latest update (EDIT: it works, but with plenty of errors shwon in the logs. Still crashes at autosave). We'll see...

EDIT3: nothing new regarding my rivers.bmp. I've redone the bmp, made sure it is with correct colors and indexed. The game won't load if I have my rivers.bmp. Without it, it loads and I'm able to play, but with minor rivers from vanilla in addition (so it looks weird). Everytime I try to put my own rivers.bmp, the game crashes with a graphical errors that says "too small rivers found" and a lot of it.
Everything else works for now, except the trees. Again I made sure to follow exaclty the procedure, but when loaded, I have infinite trees all over the map, and all of the same type. A "blank" file (just black) correct it, but no trees. I don't know why either, I tried different approach (resize, try one spot of color, etc...) nothing change. It loads, but trees are everywhere.
So my rivers.bmp doeasn't work and make the game crash at load, and my trees.bmp doesn't work properly, the game loads fine but I have have one type of tree and it is everywhere.

I hope OP could update the working basic Ireland map in Chapter 2 for 2.8? My map keep crashing on "Loading CoA", and I really need some basic working reference to help me troubleshoot. Thanks.

Looking at your river.bmp files: The ones in Arkha and ATaleOfArkha have all the colors in the 1st few color palette entries. The one in DF has pink and white in the last 2 palette entries. Your color palette *must* be in exactly the same order as the vanilla files. The game doesn't use the color of the pixels, only their palette index numbers. It should be (relatively) easy to convert your files into ones with the proper color palette, altho the exact procedure depends on what graphics app you use.

I know less about trees.bmp, but you appear to have a similar problem with that. The black that the vanilla file uses is color index 255 (the last in the palette). Yours is not.

Well it worked, thanks a lot! I would have never figure that was the issue!
I can now launch my mod with my rivers.bmp, all is working fine! Thanks again for your help!
Maybe it shoulb be notified in the tutorial, just in case someone like me does not know that color palette have to be in the exact same order as the vanilla files and how to do it (I'm not a Photoshop expert, took me a while to figure it out, haha!)...
As for the trees it was the same issue, I changed my color palette by copying the one from the vanilla trees.bmp and it worked fine.
So lesson of the day: color palette are b*tches when you don't know how to handle them! :p
Now I have a fully functionnal map, and yes there is still issues, but nothing linked to this tutorial, so it will be an other story!...
Thanks jursamaj!

Welp, before driving myself to wits end, might as well see if someone has the fix before fooling around much further. My main issue is that I am unable to add a second landed province (fit with new empire, kingdom, duchy) without a CTD at loading databases.

I've followed and used this tutorial a hundred times with complete success at getting a mod to run with one landed province. A previous version of this mod that I had invested a significant amount of time into had the same second province CTD issue. I restarted from scratch, figuring the issue might be any of the changes I had made previously, but it looks like the issue is coming from somewhere else. I vaguely recall going through what crash logs existed back the first time around, but I'm going to try it again as well as invest more time trying to tinker with map. Before I do that though, I want to see if anyone knows the culprit outright.

I'll share the mod file, considering it is completely bare-bones and has no issue running if the second province is removed.

EDIT: Fixed. Somehow, and, embarrassingly enough, I missed adjacencies. Especially considering how it's outlined in this tutorial, but I guess this is what I deserve for doing everything off memory at this point. Going to go back and test on my old version to see if that was the case there. Took me actively looking through setup.log and going off a hunch at logged adjacency information. Apparently the game will run a single landed province without the file, but anything past that is a crash.
