In 4x and exploration in EU4 both hard and soft range limit is used to limit exploration. Hard range limit is what Eu4 or MoO2 or Gal Civ uses where your ships can go a set distance but no further when exploring.

This is opposed by a soft range limit which EU4 before EL Dorado or Distant Worlds. In EU4 you could go anywhere but the hull of ships slowly degraded till the ships were sunk or in Distant Worlds you can go anywhere but once you run out of fuel your ships move very slowly.

I am curious which will be used in Stellaris?

It would be interesting if there was a way to mine and refine your own fuel making there no limit so long as you could find a fuel source before running out.

I could imagine certain specialised deep space exploration vehicles having a limited capacity to mine their own fuel but larger capital ships requiring refinery ships tagged to their fleet. So you would have a hard cap but one you could work around.

Reminds me of Alien Legacy, where your ships had a limited amount of fuel, but you could find energy to refuel them. Problem is that they couldn't refuel themselves, so you'd build an empty colony (for free), land, have the invisible spirits that reside there refuel your ships, then set off.
