Update 6: 2225-2230

As with last time, the first year was fairly uneventful except for the development of new technologies. In both cases I have begun shifting my efforts towards military needs over economic ones. The development of Neural Implants will be key for future deployment of slave armies, which I intend to feature heavily in planned wars upon the elves. Developing new ship AI is similarly important for space battles and the clearing of hostile forces on and around our borders. Physics continues to be our weakest link when it comes to science and development, meaning that my choices there will have to be far more strategic than with Social technologies.

Our science ships continue to probe the final frontier, and have been constantly slowed by the nebulae on the frontiers. At this point they are finally managing to clear through the Weeping Ghost Nebula into more open systems. Hopefully this will speed up the exploration process. Anomalies continue to be found, but so far, I have not had the same luck in hauls of minerals or energy, instead reaping more influence and occasional science bumps. However, we did find another First League artifact. My hope is to actually complete this quest line for once, which could be possible in an apparently empty galaxy.

Now, back to more R&D news. Now, realistically, it'd probably make more sense to pursue Colonial Centralization or Frequency Tuning, but frankly, if this AAR doesn't include Jedi Viking, I'm wasting all of your time. Therefore Psionic Theory had to be chosen. Their horned helmets will carry the vast and unknowable energies of psionic powers to devastate and confuse all lesser races. Also, some new engines are being worked on, but that's irrelevant compared to Jedi Vikings, the Space Age Norse Beserker!

The completion of research into torpedoes (Thanks again smugglers!) has opened up the development of the new torpedo boat for our navy. The current idea is to create a 1-1 ratio for these to corvette gunships until larger vessels are created. The new torpedo boat will provide us now with the oomph we need to bring down larger and more powerful vessels, especially if they have shielding. Presenting, the Horker-class Torpedo Boat.

Viking advisers suggested turning Valhalla into a farming world dedicated towards creating new migrants for the stars. However, in the end the Runemaster decided to simply build a Monument to Purity on the world. This has boosted local happiness and quickly stemmed the flow of migrants from Valhalla to other colonies. We don't want people getting uppity and forgetting about the whole purpose of the Viking space endeavor after all.

8d3eziJ.jpg

Shortly after the completion of the monument, one of our science vessels encountered, for the first time, some friendly aliens roughly at our technological level. It seemed for a moment that a new civilization had been found. Unfortunately, it turned out to just be an enclave of trading space turtles in the Ulkad System. They seemed eager enough to trade which has opened up new opportunities for the Viking people. Our energy production has been soaring and what's really been holding us back is minerals. Therefore, we are building new relations with this enclave, trading a surplus of energy for minerals to fuel construction of energy, to trade for more minerals. The extra is being used to build a lot more new warships. Soon, the Viking people can finally start blowing up hostiles, as we were always destined to.

Obviously I'm not going to show every trade I make with the XuraCorp, but rest assured that when a good amount of energy is built up, it will be traded for more minerals.

Before we get to the explodey part of the update, a quick word from our sponsors: The Engineering Research Lab! We put the boom in BOOM!

TtYgkML.jpg

Thanks to the trades with XuraCorp, the Viking fleet has been nearly doubled in size, as we added seven Horker-class ships to our arsenal. First Fleet has been dramatically increased in size, and will be deployed shortly to start cleansing the systems which have been occupied by various hostile forces along the borders of the Moot. Unfortunately, some are a bit too strong for our guns (for now), but I'm confident with a few more years and ships, we'll be able to start really securing the frontier. Also pictured, our efforts to build a Frontier Outpost in the Crimdor System. This will expand our control over several good systems with various useful resources, mostly energy and minerals. The Crimdor system itself actually has two intact energy mining stations that were secured by science ships during exploration of local anomalies. As soon as the frontier station is completed those stations will automatically add +8 energy per turn.

w4SlkrC.jpg

Troubling news comes from the Industrial Age ocean world of Budding Dreams. The Vetirisius creatures there have unified, at least in a small way, to create an independent army to combat our research station's excursions to the surface. They obviously know of our efforts, and funds are now being saved to create ground forces that could be used for a full scale invasion. In 2230, we will begin infiltration of their governments in response to their new organization. We are enacting a takeover protocol which the goals are A) trick the planet into atomic war, thus eliminating them as a threat or B) bringing them peacefully into our empire and then purging them (but friendly-like).

w1n0awa.jpg

Our fleet has set out, at long last to start acting offensively, rather than just in reaction to unfortunate events. The first target is the Mithar System, occupied by automated mining drones who proved hostile to explorers. Glodsson's fleet was deployed and engaged, possessing over twice as much firepower as the drones. The end result of this battle (testing our current fleet layout and warships) was the loss of only two of our Sumbrandr-class warships. It was decided that the two vessels would be replaced with Horker-class instead, bringing us closer to a 1-1 ratio. A Science ship was sent to survey the wreckage but will not arrive in time to complete the survey before the end of this update. All in all, a good first strike and reasonable practice for coming battles against much stronger foes.

State of the Moot 2230

Elves Killed: None

Not Dead?: Yep!

Energy: Rapidly growing, despite the growing energy requirements of the empire and navy. This makes me very optimistic, even as I keep trading with XuraCorp.

Minerals: Production remains lower than I'd like, but with much of our minerals now being simply purchased from XuraCorp, I'm optimistic we'll have the infrastructure needed to increase production in no time.

Influence: We're steadily banking up more influence, but I won't really feel comfortable until I have a reserve of 400+.

Science: Science resources have essentially remained static since the last update. I'm really scraping for Physics Research, which means that down the line Viking ships are going to suffer for a lack of Shielding. Considering the Dokkalfar use Energy weapons, this could be a very serious problem for when it comes time to exterminate elves.

Exploration: Back up to more reasonable levels. No new primitive races or any races for that matter. Statistically speaking I should encounter at the very least a Fallen Empire shortly. With the way things are going, I may be unlucky enough to get Militant Isolationists, of course Enigmatic Observers would be far worse for my long-term plans.

Domestic Affairs: The Jess'Inax on Noregr remain fairly quiet and there are no Abolitionists elsewhere, yet. I'm keeping an eye on the faction, but so far the threat remains low.

Foreign Affairs: The development of an anti-abduction taskforce on Budding Dreams is of course a direct challenge to my supremacy. Infiltration will begin immediately with the next update, and should that fail, I will begin development of an assault army, hopefully with Jedi Vikings to complement them. Of course, considering that I'm now a hostile race seeking to build an army of slaves to fight against a larger foe, and using psionic powers to do so, I've clearly become the Elders from XCOM. So hey, I've got that going for me.

Questions for the Audience: A new segment of the State of the Moot, I would like to hear opinions for the key long-term problems of the Viking Unified Moot. Here they are:

1. Jedi Vikings, Mind Beserkers, or Vǫlva Warriors? I'm having a hard time choosing.

I'm partial to Mind Beserkers, but all sound quite good. Or perhaps Psiragian Guard? *walks nonchanthly away from the horrible pun, whistling badly*

What have the elves done to all sentient life!

Volva is a name that was IRL bestowed only on women who had a prophetic gift, so it could go for the female regiments, and Jedi Vikings for the male.

Mind Berserker.. It's strange, really: a berserker loses his conciousness in the thick of battle, and it doesn't correlate with having psionic abilities under control. It could, however, be attributed to a person that is so "one with the Force", he/she does all this subconciously.

I don't know! Clearly we are almost definitely headed towards some sort of climatic confrontation between massive empires. Haven't even found a Fallen Empire yet, which is a bit odd, as in a Huge Galaxy with as few nations as it appears we have, I would have thought that by now at least a FE would have shown up.

Yeah, in my mind though, I was seeing the psi warriors as all female wearing pointy metal hats wielding psionic powers to reduce enemies to gibbering wrecks.

I like the idea of jedi Vikings, especially jf they get lightsabers. No such thing as too much Star Wars references

Unfortunately I don't have any laser tech (Physics resarch being a weak point for me) so I don't think they can have lightsabers. I envision them more with battleaxes anyways.

Locals putting together a multinational organization to fight your abductions? That's XCOM, baby.

Yes, but they're the ones playing on Impossible Difficulty. MWUAHAHAHAHA.

Update 7: 2230 - 2235

Everyone, allow me to introduce Steve, the Viking Bureaucrat in charge of Primitive Affairs and Infiltration. He'll be handling the points where we are infiltrating the Ocean World of Budding Dreams and related affairs.

"Ummmm....hi everyone, I'm Steve Stevesson, head of the Infiltration Project on Budding Dreams. This is my first major project since reorganizing the filing cabinets for the Agriculture Bureau on Valhalla. With the start of the new update, we have immediately begun infiltration of the Atomic Age society that could pose such a threat to us in the future."

hFFhzcF.jpg

All right, we'll leave Steve be to start his new project. We have every confidence he'll be able to handle things. Meanwhile, one of our science ships found a fantastic anomaly, which deserved further investigation. Unfortunately, the tree that was apparently floating in the middle of space was defended and its guardians very nearly wiped out the science vessel and its crew.

l4NTq7k.jpg

As I REALLY want the bounty of this particular artifact, the fleet was dispatched at once, but a critical error was made. I did not adjust the fleet course correctly, and they chose to take the shortest possible route, which led them to the Drone Processing Hub system. The fleet immediately got in over their heads and had to embark on an emergency FTL retreat, losing only four corvettes, but avoiding destruction. This set back the exploitation of this wonder significantly.

Gxqexi6.jpg

So, because I have been picking the low hanging fruits when it comes to Physics Research (see the very low total Physics production), that was the next tech to complete. I decided to go with Fusion Power as I can hardly afford to go without as Engineering provides us with more topnotch weapons and other useful tech for the fleet. Still, we are definitely going to suffer when it comes to shielding and lasers in the future.

a2nbpK3.jpg

Now, back to Steve:

"So, yeah, we've definitely managed to infiltrate society, and they totally think that our people are also plant people. Things are completely groovy."

32yhxGq.jpg

So the fleet has been repaired and rebuilt and this time I personally charted their course to the Dithaporu System to kill the tree guardians. It's a rather long voyage, and I will miss the energy credits that we could be receiving for these craft, but it's the price of war.

MSbJxWU.jpg

While we wait for the fleet to arrive, some more tech advancement news. This time, I've decided that based on the options available, it's finally time to go for Destroyers. With no active alien races, Defense Platforms are unneeded, and I have no interest in introducing robots at this stage in the game.

jkgorIH.jpg

So once again, Steve would like to update us on the Budding Dreams project.

"So, yeah, some of our guys thought it would be a great idea to violently overthrow the government of a major nation. It didn't end well for them. These plant people are too chill for that sort of thing. They don't know it was us though."

KyJxCoC.jpg

The grand fleet engaged with the tree guardians, and I tried to take as pretty of a screenshot of it as I could, because the battle was so lopsided. No losses, minimal damage, and the enemies were wiped out completely. I always like taking good screenshots of space combat in Stellaris.

WQHANlK.jpg

Once again we have Society Research coming up, and thanks to the massive amount of science we've got in the field, they come up quick. There's a lot of good choices, but since I'm planning on a military buildup (to invade some primitives) the Centralized Command makes the most sense. The Military Academy will be built on Jotunheim in the near future to allow our forces the maximum potential in future assaults.

ml5zGqD.jpg

Ah, the fruits (literally) of victory. Considering how many nasty things we'll be doing in the future to wipe out the elf menace, I've decided it would be best to have an additional happiness modifier for the whole empire.

CJc791f.jpg

Steve disappeared one day and we quickly found out why. We will enact a Viking solution to this problem. Godsdammit Steve.

m92Mqqe.jpg

Meanwhile, Physics research completed and I decided to go for Active Countermeasures in order to combat any future ameobas we may encounter in our explorations.

f8YIu3W.jpg

In military news, I've decided to start clearing operations with the fleet. The goal is to eliminate the weaker hostile systems to open up exploration away from the current frontiers. Also, this will make manuevering a bit easier, as we saw with the earlier mistake. Most importantly, it will provide my admiral with much needed experience for future operations against more difficult targets. The first such operation was in the Mestros System, leading to the defeat of some mining drones for fairly light losses.

rLaNlCA.jpg

Social Research continues, and for a lack of better options I decided to switch over to Frequency Tuning. I have never really bothered with this tech before, but who knows? maybe we'll find it useful against the drones, unless I'm understanding the description wrong.

vnkK5p0.jpg

Steve has been eliminated with Viking efficiency.

E5UizVF.jpg

With Steve's elimination, I decided to pay more close attention to what I thought was an Atomic Age world which had developed an XCOM project to destroy my research station. Upon closer inspection I realized that this was NOT the Atomic Age world, but instead was in the Wegmore System, which had nothing of interest or value. The entire project and years of wasted energy and research were clear. They were only in the Industrial Age, and I don't think I have anything to fear from a bunch of steampunk plants. Despite the completion of Phase 3, I decided to cancel the infiltration project after nearly five years, all because Steve misfiled which planet was the one that created XCOM. At least we'll have even more Social tech. Godsdammit Steve.

State of the Moot 2235

Elves Killed: None

Not Dead?: Yep!

Energy: Energy is still growing in production, mostly as Valhalla starts really producing new pops who aren't migrating away. Similarly, the other worlds are producing a good amount of energy, keeping up with fleet and multiple new mining and research stations.

Minerals: Production has skyrocketed lately, and with infrastructure nearly complete on the core systems, I can focus on building more mining platforms. Overall, with 83 minerals a month, I feel a lot more comfortable than I had been.

Influence: All's good here, but my leadership is nearing the end of life for most of them, and I'm sure I'll be burning through a lot here shortly.

Science: Social Research is still fantastic, while Physics and Engineering lag. I have been able to direct my constructor towards research stations, but it has not been enough to enable these other two fields to keep up with Social tech. Hopefully this will change in the next few years as a few laboratories on the core systems come online and more research stations are constructed.

Exploration: Slowing again, as I have been focusing on special projects and the nebulae remain in the way.

Domestic Affairs: The Jess'Inax on Noregr remain fairly quiet and there are no Abolitionists elsewhere. Steve of course has been posthumously terminated from his position.

Foreign Affairs: Budding Dreams is a steampunk irritant, but we've decided to leave them alone for now. An army with psi warrior attachments has been created, so if need be, some conventional crushing of these creatures can be enacted. I'd like to have Terraforming tech before I begin the occupation, however.

Questions for the Audience:

1. I'll look for any suggestions on Exploration to maximize the possibility of finding aliens. Should I send out a couple military ships to do recon in force in a direction, or keep up with the slow but steady exploration and surveying from the center of the Moot?

Final Note: This will be the last image of Jotunheim, as you can see, the infrastructure has been completed and there's not really much more to add there.

WNpiI78.jpg

baDBlVS.jpg

I say slow and steady wins the race. Others may vary

Never trust a Swede.. sorry Steve

Maybe just pump out more research ships without scientists and send them away to find contacts/special systems?
If something valuable is found, you can teleport a scientist onto the ship and research.

Military recon will have to be strong or risk being killed by space monsters, and no quickened FTL escape for them unlike science ships. But heavy recon will leave the core planets less protected - IF that's going to matter, since no obvious threats are around now.

I would use the fleet to scout a region and immediatly clear it of hostiles if they can handle hem. Send a research ship after the fleet to pick up debris and scan the planets, prioritising if you spot a system with a good planet your vikings can live on, of course.

But if you have a bunch of science ships its not a bad idea to just send them out i vestigating systems in all directions. Keep them on evasive and they should be fine, hen nust djspatch the military only once you spot hostiles completely blocki g you in one direction.
