I need your help I cant play the game. The first time I installed it it worked then never again. Then I reinstalled and it worked the first time only. Now I cant get it to work. What it does is crashes to desktop as soon as it gets to loading the graphics in the title load-up. I have disabled sound, taken out the title video, updated my sound driver, change the display settings to several combinations all to no avail. I have loaded all the patches still know help. Other games I have seem to work fine. I have no idea how to fix it I have read the forums and nothing seems to help and I tried several little tweaks but still nothing.

System

Windows XP

Amd Athlon 2200 1.8 mgz.

Nividia Gforce 4 ti 4400 with 43.45 driver

sound blaster live with latest drivers

DirectX 9.0

768mb of ddr ram (333)

Please help if you can and if you need anything else just let me know.

Have you updated your XP?
How did you disable the video, Did you rename your AVI dir?

I have all of the critcal updates and all but 1 driver that has to do with internet support or something like that. Here is the strangest thing last night I totally uninstall the game. I leave the opening video alone and let the game play through and I get to the save/load/new game screen. Where I can then start playing. I did this with each version of the patch up to 1.4 and it worked so I played all night long. I turn on the computer this morning click on the game icon and the video starts I get to loading graphics on the progress bar and BAM back to desktop. I can no longer play and have changed nothing since lastnight what so ever.

Reboot, then rename the AVI folder to AVI_back, then try it.
At what point does it crash?

Same problem ...

Play the game once then it never worked again. Get a CTD when "Initializing Graphics".

Editor doesn't work either.

XP - PRO (up to date)
PIII - 450MHZ
576MB RAM
DirectX 9.0a
GeForce4 Ti 4200
SB Audigy Audio [e400]

*** Drivers up to date ***

Steps Taken:
1. Renamed Avi to Avi_back - didn't work.
2. Updated to directx 9 from 8.1 - didn't work.
3. Installed patches 1.02 to 1.05 (newest) - didn't work.
4. I've re-installed the game several times before preforming a number of these steps - didn't work
5. Adjusted display properties to every possible combination - didn't work.
6. Disabled game port - didn't work
7. Cleaned registries and re-installed - didn't work

This one's got me stumped and a little frustrated. I'm not a rookie at navigating window's operating system or any operating system as a matter of fact, but I can't crack this one.

If anyone has any sugestions, no matter how unlikely they are, please share them.

Thanks for reading ...

What driver version for your graphics card are you using.
Also you may want to play around with the acceleration for your video card.

Can you list for me the driver file names you are using for the sound card?

The thing you both have in common is the video card. What is the actual driver version number you are using?

Have you tried adjusting the acceleration on your Audio card as well?
You may also want to browse through your registy and see if you can find anything wrong.

ahhh the famous CTD

Greetings Castellan. I have had the same problem. Yesterday i intalled the game, intalled the patch, played for a few hours....today the game crashes at my favorite part: Initializing graphics. You may remember i'm running a dionsaur compared to these other fellows, but we all seem to have the same problem!

Do i really have to reinstall everytime i want to play? :-(

Is any of your hardware the same as the two above?

Sound acceleration = Control panel > Sound, Speach and Audio > Sound and Audio devices > Volume Tab > Speaker settings (advanced button) > Performance tab.

ATI Rage 128 Video Driver version 6.36.1

no, my equipment is far older than theirs. I found it interesting that we were having the same problems. Reinstalling didn't help....i've been teased with my two hours of gameplay for the month!
