Was the ~ "tildle" actually in the regisrty entry?

It should not be. Check that the full path is specified and that the directory names are not truncated. It could just be a resolution thing with them not being displayed.

The "~" was actually in the regisistry entry. I checked the binary file.

I renamed the file with the full path specified, but unfortunately it didn't make a difference. ((hangs his head in sorrow))

As it stands right now, which is interesting, the game will run twice everytime I re-install patch 1.05b. The editor will run twice everytime I re-install patch 1.05 & 1.05b.

Thanks for taking the time with this by the way.

Did this happen with 1.00? ie no patches, a fresh install from the CD. When you originally installed?
After patching and a reinstall?

I am trying to figure out where the problem started.

Actually it ran a few times the very first time I installed it (no patch). Then it would fail at the same point. I tried re-installing ... with no luck. I must of tried every combo of patch and re-install.

The first time it work again was with patch 1.05b.

I would suggest contacting Strategy First tech support.
They are the ones who write the installer for your version.
If you hear back from them please let me know.

I would like to add that I am having the same problem. Plays once, never again.

I did upgrade to DX9 (as it was mandatory before updating my video card drivers), but I am using an ATI card rather than an NVIDIA one.

Strategy First, North America version on XP with latest windows update run.

My hatred for Strategy First is beginning to grow. They've added nothing but problems to Paradox's games, from unneccessary bloat, horribly buggy intro movies that caused lockups, broken (and inneffective) copy protection schemes that caused freezes and crashes, all the while providing almost nothing in the means of advertising. The list goes on and on.

I'm importing my next Paradox game from Europe. Or pirating it...

Best to read the rules and rephrase that sentance. ;)
BTW there was no CP on the SF version of HOI.

There is another thing you guys can try.

Rename a codec file labeled ac3audio.ax, located C:\windows\system32\ folder, in order to do this, follow the steps below:

a. Double-click "My Computer"
b. Double-click the "C" drive
c. Double-click the "Windows" folder
d. Double-click the "System32" folder
e. Right-Click the "ac3audio.ax and choose "rename"
f. Rename the file to "ac3audio.ax.bak".

Once you've done that, start the game normally and see if it loads. If that does not work, try renaming the iviaudio.ax to iviaudio.ax.bak (which will be located in the same folder as ac3audio.ax) and see if that helps.

Isn't the tilde a leftover from dos's ablility to handle no more than 8 characters in a filename (with .xxx added, that'd make 12)?

anyway, I'm having the exact same problem on both my computers, one's a AMD K6 500 stationary with win98 and the other's a pentium 1400 laptop with XP.

on the laptop the whole computer crasches after producing a bluescreen saying something like "påbörjar dumpning av fysiskt minne" (initializing dump of physical memory), only it flashes so fast it's almost impossible to read.

on the stationary, it just crashes to desktop. I'm trying 1.05b patch now as soon as it's downloaded.

The tilde does not display in my registry however. I get the whole path displayed.

I think that's because of the new File Allocation Table used in win 2000 and XP, FAT 32. It might be in 98 too, dunno. anyway, what some FAT16 function did was that

WAIT! damn it, here I'm going on and on about unrelated matters and even get it wrong. Sorry. I don't believe in deleting text however. I'm just making this part BOLD so you won't have to read that other part DON'T READ THE FIRST PARAGRAPH

no, windows could read that. FAT might not have anything to do with it. instead changes in the code for the registry might be the reason (those could have originated in FAT32, so the discussion is pointless), as I know it, only a dos function. remember how you had to write "CD progra~1" to open program files? that's the reason. the registry never evolved after DOS (or win 3.1, whatever) anyway, that's the reason filenames longer than 12 characters are changed to "fucker~1.cum" instedad of "fucker is an offensive word.cum". consequently, a file created later (let's call it "fucker's a word that should not be used in everyday language.cum") would be renamed "fucker~2.cum". notice that all the parts with a tilde are six-letter words in a whatever it's called in english. directory.

This changed between two versions of windows (probably 98 and 2000), and as a result of that, your registry enters differ

"Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00<[significant line]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Strategy First\Hearts of Iron]
@=""
"Install Path"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\STRATE~1\\HEARTS~1"
"version"="1.05.00"
"language"="English"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Strategy First\Hearts of Iron\1.05.00]"

Get it?

Okay I'll buy that. :)
