The problem is your old drivers, it is a known problem with those drivers.

Have you updated your sound drivers as well?
What brand of CPU do you have?
 
What resolution do you run your desktop?
What resolution do you run the game?
How much memory do you have?
 
I would say there is a better solution we just need to find the right combo.

First I would set the ingame resolution to match your screen setting. or try setting both to 1024x768.

After trying that, you can turn doen the acceleration on your graphics and sound cards. I think this would work better than downgrading the whole system. You can experiment with different settings, try completely off then take it up a notch at a time.
